  • they are told to be smarter then us

    i hope it's true

  • See this actually has purpose other then god damn sea world, this has scientific meaning, otherwise it would be gust cruel to the dolphins

  • the fact that we think humans are 'higher' in some linear way is pathetic. The question that precedes is 'do dolphins think humans are pathetic because they don't swim'.

  • @ILLZUKUNT Alot of people can swim /:

  • The dolphin's probably thinking "Give me some sort of challenge!"

  • I'd like to think that dolphins are the next species that will evolve to be as complex and advanced as human beings are.

  • @4min`13 - dolphin "hey! where's my reward treat?!" ;)

  • you know those dogs that help rescuers find people since dolphins are smart why dont they use them to help people who are in trouble in the water?

  • My friend bought a dog that watches television intently. He will obey a sit order or lay down if it's from his owner played back on television. The specialist in this video claimed only Dolphins have this unique ability.

  • I would have failed at hoop question

  • If dolphins had hands and opposable thumbs, I guarantee we'd be astonished at what we would find underwater.

  • When i die, im coming back as a dolphin.

  • If dolphins started using iPods or developing their own tech, I think we'd just get on with them, because dolphins are pretty chill.

  • sweet loveable dolphins

  • Has anyone ever tried asking dolphins to teach us their language?

  • this is crazy. dolphins are very intelligent. it almost seems wrong to have intelligent creatures captive.

  • Amazing animals

  • fuck you whale, and a fuck you dolphiiin

  • WOULD YOU FUCK A DOLPHIN

  • @KyaputenFarukon FUCK YEAH

  • after watching this video i really think that humans should be dissapear.

  • They really should be considered non-human persons.

  • @HOBAHEY31 Have you reaad/seen 'Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy'? The opening sequence is based on a similar line of thinking...I like it a lot

  • I wonder how far this intelligence goes.

  • @xilliah That's a question I reflect upon on an almost daily basis. I'm really excited about what we'll learn about them in the future, and I honestly don't doubt it for a second that they're the smartest non-human animal. Or maybe they are as smart as humans, but just don't possess (for reasons of their being confined to water) the necessary physical elements (hands) for making technology.

  • @Merjey Yea now you say it, and I think about it, this intelligence could be higher than we are willing to admit to ourselves. Then again, they might just be dolphins after all.

  • This isn't teaching, it's conforming dolphin behavior to the kind that humans can understand.

  • Unbelievable. Why are we seeking intelligent life on other planets when intelligent life is right here on earth

  • @HerrSchnellmann We're doing both.

  • @jawharp1992 Yeah, hopefully we stop cutting NASA funding and start cutting the bull shit.

  • @HerrSchnellmann Wtf? Do you even know what your saying? -.O you should see the military budget compared to the space programs.. holy fuck!

  • @SenitelKJ And your point is?

  • @jawharp1992 I think the point is though, that we arent doing enough to learn about what's right in front of us...and should therefore be in easier reach.

I think that for too long we've neglected our fellow creatures, and it's high time we started treating them like brothers and sisters...rather than commoditities to be exploited or inconvenciences to be brushed aside.

  • @HerrSchnellmann I hope you're not serious.

  • i wonder if dolphins think all people eat is fish, too? that's probably one of the only foods they see humans with...

  • @NeoGracchus Completely agree, elements of basic sentience are there but language is a difficult thing for humans to traverse let alone other creatures.

  • How amazing.

  • @TheWhiteDreamsOfLife you would be surprised on how human dolphins really are.

  • Seeing dolphins and what they are capable of .. then seeing them used for our own amusement is so wrong. These creatures belong out in the wild.. if we love them so much why can't we give them what they want. They are smart enough to make decisions and I guarantee if the tank was open to the ocean, they wouldn't isolate themselves to just 500 cubic feet of water. People need to be a little more selfless..

  • @TaranGoecke There is no more wild, if we could influence people to leave water content and temperature alone that would be one thing, but at this point these dolphins at least arent at the mercy of overfishing and violence. Hopefully we'll make the changes necessary to make the seas safe again.

  • They should keep track of where they got these dolphins and then release them back once they have worked for a while. I bet that dolphin thinks if she does well, they'll set her free.

  • @aubreyda Do you really think the dolphin wants to leave after being treated so well there?

These aren't amateurs studying a dolphin for a year and setting them free, they study them for most of their lives and the dolphins life. Its their specialty

  • Lol they can learn a whole new language but we can't figure out theirs.

  • They're classified as actual people now, so why are we killing them? if they started attacking us, we would have absolutely no right to stop them. I personally think theyre far more intelligent than we know, but the problem is that we understand our language, and they dont understand ours.

  • 1:14 GET OFF ME YOU CRAZY PERSON!!!

  • This might be of interest to some of you: some scientists now propose we should give dolphins rights and treat them as non-human persons based on their intelligence-level. It's amazing, really interesting stuff. Just search for 'dolphins' and 'non-human persons' on Google.

  • This is truly amazing and beautiful, they're actually smarter than some people ive met throughout my entire life

  • beautiful

  • dolphins are not stupid at all! They are smarter & wiser than we realize..and my gosh!aren't they soooo cute & loveable?? :}}

  • Something tells me that this video is exaggerating dolphin intelligence.

At 2:04, you can see that the dolphin starts swimming to the target BEFORE the trainer even finishes the commands.

This shows that this task must have been done so many times that the dolphin is not using intuition, but simply procedural memory.

Of course, I still think they are amazing and intelligent creatures, just not anywhere near our intelligence.

  • He should ask the question:

" You , home, want to get the fuck out".

He'll somersault his ass to the white paddle.

  • Why the fuck do we trap these breathtaking creatures in an enslaved environment? I am not even an animal-lover, but seeing this makes me convinced that these scientists ought to be set into pens and experimented thereupon!

And also to all the Japanese arseholes: here is a big and hearty FUCK YOU from us all.

  • many dolphins were once humans living in atlantis and chose to reincarnate into those bodies.

  • some people say that dolphins should be classified as non-human people on account of their intelligence.

  • Maybe they won't give me food anymore and I will hunger if not being cooperative, iI's so booring otherwise anyway ...

  • So, better learn fast ,,, their language ... and what stupid things they want from me ...

  • I guess the dolphin is doing all this cause it thinks "maybe they'll let me out of this tiny pool if I'm cooperative with this stupid puzzle" ...

  • After seeing this video again, trained dophins develop their intelligence with humans

just like the famous parrot Alex developed his intelligence with Dr.Irene Pepperberg.

Alex was amazing because he could count to 6,understood the concept of 0,could

pronounce the letters of the alphabet and was learning to read and expressed his needs through words and sentences. I have never seen dolphins talk.

I don't know why they can't talk like humans or parrots.Does anyone know why

    they can't speak?

  • @quelita28 That's because dolphins don't have (propper) vocal cords. Their mouth is only used for taking in food, and it is completely seperated from the windpipe. They create sounds by moving parts/muscles in/of their blowholes, which in fact is their nose. Ever heard a human talk through their nose? XD

  • still...if you slap some of that in between two pieces of bread and some mayo you got yourself a mighty fine snack

  • @dmerschen only if you like mercury so much, well go for it!!!

  • I just fell in love with dolphins after watching this video.

  • they are already intelligent, a dolphin is like a child, they want to please the providers, they want you happy but they dont show their own suffering, they give and give until death

  • i think humans can learn alot from Dolphins and Dolphins can learn alot from us humans as we both live in different worlds! Dolphins are so underestimated and we need to ask the questions not to give them stupid stuff to do like in this video. this is what we learn are new born kids stuff like this stop underestimating them and start to learn from them we both are very good learners!! but us humans are to hairygrant

  • Wasn't aware they were this intelligent - reliable observation of abstract thought is pretty big fucking news.

  • Sign language is been used to comunicate with dolphins, interesting.

Dr.Pepperberg, an avian scientist had mentioned that in her book

however she said that parrots can communicate better than these

mammals. I think she said that african grey parrots are smarter

    than dolohins .

  • @quelita28 I don't know if there is really a way to prove that. One issue with training Dolphins is that because they are water creatures, it's immensely more difficult to train them. Plus, we need to use hand signals because they do not hear like we do.

  • @madpaintbalerx

They don't hear people's speech ? I thought they had a good hearing.

  • @quelita28 Well idk I could be wrong but I think they hear much higher frequencies, which is the reason for their high squeaking noises and whatnot.

  • Trainer- Do you think this experiment is stupid and your time could be spent doing something more challenging.

    Dolphin-*goes to white paddle*

  • magnificent animals

  • this is amazing.

  • From my experience as a former volunteer trainer at this facility (KBMML), there WAS communication besides using hand signals. The dolphins responded to the human's voice and body language, just as much as we responded to their body language and sounds that they were making. For example, we were able to understand whether they liked having a certain object in the tank or not. This demonstrated that they had moods and feelings and preferences. I call that communicating.

  • Looking at this amazing video that so clearly documents dolphin intelligence makes me hate those Japanese that kill dolphins even more so than I do. It's bad enough to so callously kill a "dumb" animal, but to kill an intelligent [and gentle] animal the way that they do [just slicing into them with sharp spears] is beyond words.

  • @Rayarena They're intelligent, yeah, but gentle? Haha, no. Dolphins rape, kill (sometimes baby dolphins), and commit hate crimes, possibly just for fun. They really are a lot like us, in that respect.

  • @3Gyro I didn't know that, but I guess that's what comes with intelligence. That said, if there are good humans and bad humans, why shouldn' t there be good dolphins and bad dolphins [i.e. dolphins that commit hate crimes, etc..]

  • @Rayarena

    Exactly.

  • check out the cove everybody

  • These are soo inteligent. No one can doo this like the other dolphins

  • that was remarkable

i knew they're smart but i didn't know they can understand word orders

    dolphins kick ass

  • While I think it's interesting that people are teaching dolphins a sign based language. I think it would be more interesting if we used technology to teach them a language based on their dialet/communication methods so that they could communicate back with us more easily. We could then use text to speech and speech to text based software for dolphin dialect. Designing a good dolphin language would be really interesting.

  • OMG this is AMAZING :):) I am SURE these are the smartest animals in the world, i want to swim with them sooo bad!!

  • Unreal how intelligent they are.

  • Mind Control

  • Dolphin Religion

  • lol this isn't language...this is respondent conditioning

  • you must be really dumb. define language. and please explain to me why apes cant do the same thing. and also explain why dolphin is the only creature ebsides ourselves that can tell the difference between an image (tv) and reality. and explain to me why is the only wild creature that actively seeks out human companionship not based on food but on saving our worthless hides consistently

  • apes have learnt sign language and are very good at it. You are right about the dolphins though

  • this fairly recent study showed that dolphins can even understand grammar in hand signals. i think thats the differnce that shows dolphins are smarter than chimps. plus echolocation extremely sophisticated and requires alot of brain power. i personally believe dolphins might be as intelligent as us. i hope they do more studies like this

  • @cryostation I'm not taking sides in this but language is a mean by which to communicate ideas between agents.

  • @cryostation Chimps do actually. They are quite capable of learning and communicating in sign language. Maybe it is that no one has thought of using TV images with chimps. As for saving our sorry asses, I don't know. Maybe they do it for the same reason that we rescue beached dolphins (and get exasperated when we still insist on going into the water.)

  • @cryostation -"Language -noun. any set or system of such symbols as used in a more or less uniform fashion by a number of people, who are thus enabled to communicate intelligibly with one another" There, I googled it for you.

-That's why scientists are doing research, because we don't know the answer.

    - Some believe that it is because they see us as equally or more intelligent creatures and therefore seek contact with us.

  • @cryostation I think Dolphins' intelligence makes them very 'aware' of their surroundings. I also think it's possible to use the TV to teach the dolphin far more than fetching rubber hoops. What about show a dolphin a video of diagrams of say the bone stucture of a human hand and a dolphin's.

  • @cryostation

Our wothless hides? Yes, dolphins are cool and smart and deserve respect, but cut the self-loathing human bullshit.

  • @hyunseob900 And that is how human children are taught at school. Without it we would be living in caves.

  • @hyunseob900 that isnt correct since the dolphin had to improvise new behaviors in response to a series of commands that she hadn't performed before.

  • unbeliavable. i cant say that im surprised. i knew this creatures are so intelligent. but they have demonstrated their love for us by saving people from shipwrecks or sharks. they should take all the japanese fishermen who kill these poor animals and spear them in the fucking head. theyre much more worthless then these noble creatures

  • Wow, the dolphin is smarter than my retarded human cousin.

  • DO DOLPHINS HAVE FOLK TALES?

Assuming their ability to communicate in ultrasound, and living in groups, as well as long lives, and the demonstrated linguistic abilities, I think it is not unlikely for them to have the ability to tell stories, perhaps even lengthy. They must have names for various phenomena that they see in the sea, and there is a meaning to share experiences to prevent their children doing certain mistakes.

  • A M A Z I N G

  • this makes me more sad... we people are so mean, heartless... and look at those dolphins :( why?

  • pretty amazing... such intelligent creatures

  • Intelligent and friendly on rye bread with some mayonnaise

  • I think these scientists should ask if the dolphins are sad. Then they'll really start communicating with dolphins and not pretend like we're teaching them. The trainers are not making them smarter, their intelligence is already there. We have to learn from them, and ask the questions that matter.

  • @yang0769 i completely agree with you. The only thing we know about dolphins being content and 'happy' is that when they are, they have a pinkish tinge to their underside as they would in nature, the ones that aren't happy in captivity lose it quickly, the dolphins here still have the pink colour, which only happens when the dolphins aren't forced to participate, they take part only if they want to, which for the sake of research like this, is much better than putting them under forced stress

  • Comment removed

  • @yang0769 In other words they can understand us, but we cannot understand them!

  • @beastinblack

That's exactly right! because we have our heads to high up our asses as a species.

  • @yang0769 To communicate with someone who speaks a different language, don't you have to learn theirs or teach them yours? They taught the dolphin sign language and then proved that dolphins understand syntax and are capable of executing complex commands and improvising when needed (she takes the person to the 'no' paddle when there is no surfboard in the pool. That requires intelligent thought.)

  • Comment removed

  • @yang0769 You go ahead and ask a dolphin if he is sad.

We aren't trying to make them smarter we are trying to find out their true potential through the tasks we make them accomplish, test their limits and so on.

What you're saying is a bit dumb and i'm surprised people rated your comment like that.

  • @yang0769 We were NOT making them smarter and we knew their intelligence was already there. We were learning from them by discovering how they were thinking; how their memory worked; how similar or dissimilar they were to humans; it was all about discovery and learning. You want to ask them questions? Fine. What questions would YOU ask, and how would YOU ask them, yang0769?

  • @yang0769 Yeah its also a really small space for them, surely they know if theyre that intelligent that they need more space and stimulus , poor dolphins :(

  • @yang0769 sadness would be a difficult concept for a dolphin to tell. let alone trying to teach it.

  • @yang0769

You're assuming they think simular to humans, it's like even if a dog could speak english, it's thought patterns are so different it would sound like the ramblinings of a mad man.

Not only that dolphins may not experience emotion, and / or maybe can't understand what emotion is.

  • @FadingLights0 Dolphins brains are more developed than human brains.

  • I hope the dolphin is released into the wild after this study is done with. Dolphins are not born to be in an enclosure like that for our own selfish amusement. How about I enclose a human to a 2m by 2 m enclosure and see whether the stress will get to him and make him suicidal. The proverb says "do unto others as you wish others do unto you " and this applies to animals too.

  • I know what you mean and feel the same, but a dolphin raised in captivity would probably be scared to death being left out in the open sea by itself, probably be best to release them in a small pod, but they still might have to be taught how to hunt and stuff before being released... its a long process I assume, but would be worth it =)

  • This is incredible, the more I watch on dolphins the more I am amazed and I am starting to thing that were are only scratching the tip of the ice berg here, I have a feeling these creatures are a hell of a lot cleverer than we realise...

  • Dolphins swim 10 miles a day. Now he is confined to a swimming pool 30 yards long. Many dolphins have committed suicide in those shows in Florida by literally drowning themselves and the rest of the dolphins even prevented the coach from reaching to him to save him. It was appalling to see how they respected "his decision". These humans only think about their own fun, they dont consider what that is like for a dolphin to be confined to a shoe box for swimming.

  • This is such a beautiful thing!

  • the thing i love about dolphins is that they move in schools but everyone is a teacher

  • wow! when they gave the command to push a lady to a hoop, I was really confused! I had no idea what to do. That dolphin is AWESOME! It totally outsmarted me!

  • that was amazing how the dolphin took that lady to the 'no' option becuase there was no hoop. its the dolphins way of saying- there is no hoop dawg lol great thinking even i cound'nt have thought of it that quick O_o lol

  • The factors that determine the intelligence of an animal. They have a:

    -Social structure

-Vocal or gestual communication within that group

-Diet (Carni/Omni-vore & nut eaters) - predominant diet of most intelligent animals

    -Ability to manipulate objects

In the case of Dolphines they live in social groups with incredibly complex vocal communication, have a diet that is good for brain development but limited manipulation with no limbs.

Think of Perrots. What factors do they share?

    Think of us.

  • Dolphins don't have what made humans a success, mirror neurons that makes learning quick possible. These neurons makes it possible to quickly learn by observing, we are extremely quick learners, no other animal beats us in that aspect. Hadn't it been for these neurons, how to make tools and use them properly would never have been learned down the generations and spread to other tribes. Some apes use tools, but it takes months just to learn an ape how to crack a nut with a stone, a simple act.

  • But in deed I think dolphins are smart, and should be protected by that fact. All intelligent animals should be protected, they are valuable as us.

  • Different types of intelligence.

An autistic person, is sometimes able to understand math and/or music beyond that of the average person.

In this case: Dolphins HAVE no hands as a handicap. They are as intelligent as us when it comes to spatial understanding and communication.

They are not motivated by materialism or manipulation of objects and so their language (or social culture) is completely alien to us.

Language (rudiments) seem to be the only common thing we are able to communicate.

  • @Kawaiibat

They are very intelligent indeed, but I wouldn't say "as intelligent as us" when it comes to communication as that hasn't been proven yet... however they are fascinating and should be treated as "non-human people" in the sense that we should prohibit any form of harm to these animals and probably prohibit confinement for human entertainment (Sea World),,,

  • actually... They kind of just did recently. Now dolphins are "non-human persons" souly because of this amazing discovery.

  • How come dolphins are able to pick up bits and pieces of our language, even if it is sign language, but we can't understand theirs?

  • in reality dolphins will inherit the earth once we wipe ourselves out

  • @rebelstar22 Yeah! Shouldn't we at least try to teach a communication that goes both ways? The dolphin doesn't have arms they can make circles and gestures with.

  • the differnce is...humans work for money...not damn fish

  • so no parasitic middledolphins then in there culture, smart, no interest ; and how much longer have they been around ?

  • @F2DGraphics, fish is a primary reinforcer, which makes it immediately reinforcing for the dolphin. For humans, we work for money, and money is a conditioned reinforcer. This means that money is paired with things like food and other primary reinforcers. Technically, we are working for food as well.

  • I never said anything about food i said fish, besides i hate fish and theres alot more to buying just food with money.

  • I wasn't criticizing you, just noting that when you understand human behavior, you start to look at it a different way. I'm majoring in behavior analysis.

  • Ah ok ok, makes sense.

  • No, people don't work for money. People work for survival, and becooming better at it, just like dolphins do.

  • Well in that case Dolphins work for survival too, but I wasn't refering to survival, im talking about doing work for others (e.g. Modern world Money) and this Dolphin fish from a human.

  • you havent even fucking answered any of my questions you just fucking post quotes and shit from the bible that hold any evidence at all....its sad how you try to hold to your believes without any evidence.....

  • The trolls are everywhere.

  • I would LOVE to know if there is any conversation on youtube that doesn't result in people bitching about God.

  • learn how to spell

  • religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man -- living in the sky -- who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do.. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! ..But He loves you.

  • its called being a spoil brat its all in ur brain no fucking demon is inside of you...dam your a fucking ignorant arrogant person...hope people like you disappear so we could have a better future and be less ignorance and more knowledgeable about the world so we could all one day take a step forward and leave this primitive old kind of government systems called religion in the past

  • @ReadPsalms1 your god was a dimensional being from another world O_o

  • lols

  • im stating to what the bible says if how god made us in our image...which bring up mankind as intolerant ,violent ...ect but we are who we are cuz we were born like this its how our species is as a whole...you sound so ignorant talking about curses....you talking about god and all this shit which no evidence just a fairy tell book that was written along time ago which theres no prove .......your just delusional

  • You seem to be speaking from your sinful nature, which you have inherited from your ancient family beginnings through the line of Adam and Eve. You need to be reborn and transformed into the image of Jesus Christ the perfect Lamb without blemish. The Lord Who is without sin. Cry out to Him for mercy!

  • You really need some therapy...Get some real knowledge there was actually a time were everybody believed in god and it was called the dark ages..look it up...My family beginnings??what are you talking about your just talking true ignorance....SO WHAT line of family were you born from the ????

  • @hruiz33 : To my knowledge, there was NEVER a time when EVERYONE believed in god. The concept of god (or gods in most cases) varied from place to place and throughout history.

  • @veeganboy i didnt say everyone believe in god i was trying to say that during the dark ages was when we were more ignorant cuz of the church .......religion just holds us back from learning

  • You are such a nut job! Do us all a favor and go jump into a pool of holy water and drown!

  • right on!
