Mine came with Vista 64, if I did that all I would have to use is the windows 7 upgrade (W7 not used yet) disk to use,no Vista 64 disk came with it,how would that work? Also what about drivers and so on, how would I find the right ones?
@DBSpy1 You could install the new HDD and install W7 directly onto that. As for drivers W7 has a great driver library but if you have some unsupported hardware just check the website for the manufacturer of your laptop
I thought the same thing. The video was made a bit over two years ago.. but still. Screw ebay though for HD's imo brand new, go OEM, and go n e w e g g d o t c o m
Question for you. If i install a new HDD on my laptop, my old hdd would have the OS--the pre-installed OS that came with the laptop when i bought it. Once the new HDD is installed, can i use the disks that came with the laptop to reinstall the OS? or do i need to buy a full version of the OS for the HDD?
Nope it's legal and easy to reinstall the OS using the restore discs that came with your computer, as long as you don't use the original OS with another computer. you just may need to re-activate windows over the phone.
u sir just saved me alot of money, i was about to get a new laptop but after seeing how easy it is to upgrade the harddrive ( and the RAM from a nother video i watched) im going to simply upgrade my old laptop to 320gb hard drive and 2gb ram my question is can this be done with a HP Compaq nc
To reinstall your old OS and files can you not simply put your old HD into the external case that you got the new HD from and transfer the old data to the new one?
First of all an ISO is a file name extension that means a disk image. A disk image is a complete copy of a CD or DVD and can be burned back to a disc. As for bittorrent it is a form of file sharing, considered to be illegal. If you don't feel comfortable with file sharing then I would recommend finding a copy of XP from a different source.
I don't know of any good methods of transferring an Operating System form one HDD to another. You could try to use gparted (an ubuntu linux app) to copy your HDD contents (including OS) but I don;t know how well that would work. I would recommend backing up your data to an external disc and re-installing the OS.
@christopherve7alb my acer laptop didnt come with an OS disc the OS was allready preinstalled(vista ultimate 32 bit) and has 2 hdd's...i made a windows complete pc copy to an external hd...can i still put new hdd's on and transfer everything using F12?
@dpapaioannow You should be able to do that, but if that fails and you don't have a recovery disk you will have to torrent one and use your legitimate key.
if it looks like it has two HDDs that means it has two partitions. Partitions are different then actual disks. Probably what you have is one small partition for hard disk software and another one for actual data.
ooo now that's a great reply "stop talking about yourself" where did you learn that one grade school. I honestly don't understand how someone could fail so much. you, my friend, are a loser. By the way if you have a problem with so called "nerds" they why are you watching videos about OSX. Fucking Hippocrate.
only people like you reply to little insignificant comments like mine! this labels you a a nerd, and i was watching youtube poop untill your link showed up and i thoght it was a funny video, you suck for trying to send your hateful nerd propaganda all over the world you douche.
If your comment was "insignificant" then why bother making it in the first place. If you weren't expecting a response to your totally inappropriate comment then you are lacking in social skils. I apologize for my harsh language earlier on, I didn't realize I was dealing with a retard.
Are you trying to replace your existing hard drive or add another one (have 2 in total)? Most (if not all) laptops have space for only one hard drive so if you want 2 you'll have to partition. As for replacing one HD with another that is possible even easy. All you have to do is find the location of your HD and replace it with the new one. If you tell me what laptop model you want to upgrade I may be of further help.
Hey thanks for that Christopher BUT, I have an Acer 1350 and I just can't seem to find the hard drive access. I even tried to pull the whole laptop apart but had to give up 12 or so screws later as I just couldn't find everything to dismantle it. From viewing what you did, it sems so easy. But there is only one panel on the back of the notebook and that is for the memory. There is what looks like a panel on th side (about the size of a HDD) but I can't get that to slide out. Can you help?
I don;t order stuff online so this is the cheapest method for purchasing from retailers. As for the comment about Acer I agree. I made the mistake about purchasing my Acer laptop and have regretted it many times.
As far as my research shows the Aspire 5100 has an IDE hard drive. Unfortunately most (if not all) external Hard Drives have SATA drives. In all likelihood you won't be able to use an external drive to replace your internal. Looks like your computer came out just before SATA was commonly used.
hello and thx for the info. i checked on the device manager and for my hard drive it gives the serial of it and then at the end it says "ATA Device". do u think a SATA could work on it?
If you have a SATA drive just stittng around give it a try the possibility exists that it may just work (just be careful not to damage anything if t=you do). If I were you I wouldn't go out and buy a SATA HDD unless you have another use for it. I would recommend that you purchase an ATA disk as you know for sure it will work.
i have vista loaded on a harddive, but now i want to upgrade my harddrive, is there a way i can transfer my os to the new system - i read that there is no way to do this because you cant uninstall vista. please help
What you have heard is correct. There is no way to uninstall Vista. You can wipe the OS off your old HDD (after backing up your data) and then re-install it using the same product key. Once the OS is installed you will have to activate it by telephoning microsoft (the OS gives you a number). This is a legal way of doing it without having to purchase Vista again.
The Dell Latitude D600 has an ATA hard disk. As far as I know external HDs have SATA disks. You will be able to upgrade the laptop's hard disk with ease however I don't think you will be able to use an external hard drive.
Well for what the EEE PC is (a low cost portable computer) it's great. I find that when running windows XP the 700 MHz CPU and 512 MB of RAM is more then enough to run it acceptably. In fact the computer works so well I can even do some low end video editing on that computer (using windows movie maker).
In my experience all Laptop hard drives are the same size so you should;t have a problem there. When choosing an external drive you want to purchase one of the smaller ones (usually these ones will get power from the USB port without needing an external power source). Most of the larger HDDs (500GB+) are really desktop disks in a case.
You should be able to get the information you need by either a) googleing the spific specs of the model number of your computer, or b) there are usually applications that you can download that would give you very detailed information about your system.

anybody good like that
this is a damn good idea by the way
TheStoicAgnostic 2 years ago
your hard drive must have got corrupted in the windows files while cloning. try a fresh install of windows or cloning it again
thePROchannel 2 years ago
it turns out there's a serious problem if you try to clone a system with Dell's media direct
the worst part about it is it permanently truncates the hard drive to the size of the original
so they had to send me installation discs but my new 320GB drive is stuck at about 75GB
I've tried every possible thing
it can't be fixed
I'm using it now even though it's less then 1/4 of what it should be
