@junkyturd the first Rush Hour and the first Shanghai Noon movie are both good. The sellout comment was more directed at the past 5 years with titles like The Spy Next Door and Tuxedo. I'll always be a fan tho.
ok...for the record you can find a wide selection of players at ebay, along with the LD movies, it is dead technology so you would just have to be a collector at most, with general care the systems should not fail the pioneers were a top brand, along with sony. so just research on the players to make sure your getting one in good working order but dont pay a arm and a leg for it cause it is dead technology
@fntsydrgn The Media Center at the Japanese uni I now work at has TONS of LDs in the library rental section. They have some good movies in there - tho I'm not sure how often they are used anymore. So check your local library for rentals if you do pick up a machine.
the feature seems handy, though someone else said their Pioneer player had difficulty changing sides and froze indefinetly. It needed some work, i guess.
Does the movie stop when changing sides and pick up where it left off on the second, and is there a notification that the player is switching sides?
Im not too worried about screen ratio, as most widescreen TVs let you select the mode (panorama, 16:9, etc) but i have a 4:3 TV anyway, so it dosen't matter.
@static1994 my guess is that these days the best deals are going to be on sites like Ebay where people like me are selling their used equipment. Do a little research, know what features you want and what brand, and be careful, but I think there are good deals to be had.
@TaishaJason Thanks for the advice. ill look there. i have a few questions though...
What are some advantages/disadvantasges between LD vs. DVD/Blu-Ray?
What brand would you recommend for use?
now for a slightly stupid question... Ive never seen a Laser Disc in action, and id like to know if it plays on 2 sides like a Record or only one side like its successor, the DVD?
@static1994 well, I think wikipedia has a good comparison between the formats. Basically, the picture on an LD is digital, while the sound is still analog, and so much more information and special features can be put on a BluRay. And yes, a LD plays on both sides and you can even get players that play both sides without having to flip the disc over after one side ends. (Most LDs and CLV and hold up to 60 minutes per side)
@TaishaJason Thanks. I looked at the Wikipedia page. Good info.
A Blu-Ray Player is a bit out of my budget, but i have a lot of good DVDs. Besides, Im in favor of analog tech. For instance, i use records and tapes.
As for the two-sided disc, it sounds more beneficial to have aplayer that can read both sides of the disc, mainly because the laser dosent have to do the same thing twice when you flip the disc over. less wear/tear. Your opinion? is laserdisc formatted in 4:3 or 16:9 screen ratio?
@static1994 My old player could play both sides. It seems like a small thing, but it's really nice not to have to get up and flip the disc over each time a side ends, especially if you're watching a CAV disc. Not sure about the 16:9 thing... LD was the spearhead to get movies presented in letterbox format, so most are widescreen, but not sure if they are adjustable to the new widescreen TVs.
@TaishaJason the feature seems handy, though someone else said their Pioneer player had difficulty changing sides and froze indefinetly. It needed some work, i guess.

@TaishaJason actually the picture on and LD is analog and the sound is digital as it says here.
Laserdisc was a composite video format:In contrast to the entirely digital DVD,Laserdiscs use only analog video. As the Laserdisc format is not digitally encoded and does not make use of compression techniques,it is immune to video macroblocking.DVDs use compressed audio formats such as Dolby Digital and DTS for multichannel sound. Most Laserdiscs were encoded with stereo CD quality audio 16bit/44.1 kHz
The hairs on my neck stood up when you showed the Blade Runner disc. And then again when you showed The Thing. I'm such a geek. And John Singleton directed Boyz N the Hood, not "Singleterry".
Nice Collection, you should frame your Clerks and Chasing Amy ones as they are signed instead of keeping them in storage. Arkwork for The Killer also looks gorgeous.
Laserdisc is a format I cant get tired of . I presently own blu-ray , dvd , and vhs , plus D-Theater tapes . I like Laserdisc the best , I sold one in 2006 , but I bought a new one from ebay plus a ac-3 demodulator box . Its beter for me now I also own a front projector by runco I also bought from ebay too .
I still have my laserdisc player and I still use it. Old technology rules! Also I still have vhs, svhs, dvhs, and betamax. If I were you I would keep your laserdiscs, don't sell them.
Okay...just curious, why didn't you just keep them? I used to rent LD(s) when I lived in Japan. I was going to sell my LD(s) on eBay a couple of years ago. When I seen the prices ....I didn't....I bought more and purchased another Pioneer CLD 2400 Industrial LD player for $25...been using it for a year now. Given enough time, the life expediency of every video format is 0.
@Condorsat10 well - I'm moving back to Japan soon, so they would just sit in storage again, possibly for another 5 years or more, so I thought better to let them go to someone who will watch them instead of just sitting in the dark
@TaishaJason If you are going back to Japan...pick up some Japanese vinyl records when your over there. They are worth money back here in the states. Cheers!
@PannaIka I can't quite remember, but something funny. I think it was a line pointing to Joey Lauren Adams, whose head is really big on the cover, with the quote "That's one big b*tch"
@Pinhead222 yeah - it's a cool LD and of course a great movie! I sold it in the garage sale tho - so now I'll have to replace it with Blu-ray or whatever comes next
Me and my freind Rob who built up Home Theaters before DVD and of course, before BluRay HD DVD... We kept our LDs, only selling a few here and there, but I have only about 250, he has over a thousand I think
I made the gross mistake of selling off most of my laserdiscs around 1999 or 2000 I have just over 100 now and it was around near to 200 when I sold most of them off for the sakes of DVD.
Im telling you straight! Most DVD and even rotten scummy bluray will ether have scummy re-mix that really pisses me off! Ive got a few bluray that are fit for my cat to crap on in the litter box I kidd you not!
@EmpireLS56KW the selling point for me with BluRay is the lack of region coding - or the fact that Japan and the States are the same BR region. So I think I've bought my last regular DVD and from now on it will be BR
@TaishaJason Big huge mistake you want to be fooled that Bluray is perfect means for picture! HD is meaningless if the colour balance doesnt mirror the 35/70mm print meaningless!
Take a look at the ABC&D compression screen captures at DVD Beaver on The Natural the first edition DVD RULES! The second edition DVD is the same as the BluCrapRay where whites are washing out the floodlights on this so called fucked up ConRay!
@TaishaJason Well good luck and just a heads-up that not all major titles on Bluray are going to be perfect with colour balance and brightness. Also beware of the sly, stereo folding now plaguing Bluray with fake stereo surrounds! It takes a trained ear to notice this and I can spot a fake Bluray within 1 second! Now then!
@TaishaJason I bought Close Encounters and David Gilmour's live Disc, But I sold my PS3 which was my only BD player...so the discs are gone as well, they looked just fine and DVD had growing pains as well, anyone who adopted can tell you
Youre mad to sale them off! Most Bluray titles will have re-mix that will be far worse than having a VHS tape of 5th generation copy. Do not sale them at any price!
I would just like to say I have had a laserdisc collection for about 6 years now and they are fantastic, they look great on my new 52" lcd, I own 4 players and approx 140 movies, wish I had some of yours though.
I guess because I love the format so much, I get a little sad when someone decides to get rid of their LD collection. Yet, I totally understand why you would do so. The remnants of your collection is still pretty darn good.
I don't currently have plans to get rid of my collection anytime soon even though I do collect DVDs. Plus, I'm not in any hurry to move to Blu-ray. At least not until I upgrade my display/TV.
Ok, this has nothing to do with movies, but I had to get it out there.
It's interesting how you and I both have lived in or around the same places in our lives. You lived in Texas (Plano, was it?) I lived and worked in TX, too. (Austin, for five years.) You lived in the Bay Area. I lived in San Francisco for many years (went to college there as well.) And of course, you lived in Japan. And I was born and raised there.. I have decided making my pilgrimage to Izumo Taisha one of my life goals!
Really enjoyed the video Jason. Laserdiscs were the bees knees I miss them but not paying those prices! Living in the UK it cost a fortune in shipping as they were so heavy. I got rid of mine years ago and got next to nothing for them. I only have 2 left that I could'nt bring myself to get rid of: The Japanese disc of The Evil Dead and The Criterion edition of Halloween. Could you show the T2 box set in a bit more detail?
That's so cool stuff! Star was FTW! ^_^ Your coming back for an extended stay? That is super awesome! I just signed my recontract for next year! Yay! ^_^
Great collection :D Too bad I don't live closer :). One way to get people to come out to buy the LD's at the garage sale is a ad on craigslist advertising that you have LD's :D That's how I ended up getting most of my discs.
I'm kind of embarrassed to say I have never seen a laser disc before. But they appear superior to VHS which makes me wonder why they weren't as popular.
some of it is marketing, etc. Part of the problem with LDs is that they're big, easy to scratch if not handled well, and you have to wait a moment while it flips sides every hour. But in terms of quality, they were light years ahead of VHS. Then someone came along with DVD and it was all over for LDs.
they both are optical laser read discs that play movies - but LDs are big - the same size as records (12") and can only hold up to 60 minutes per side.
Laserdisc was like dvd in that it could do audio commentaries, chapter stops, random access, extra features like dvd but it was analog.
Unless the laserdisc does not have a dvd release, the only reason to have them is for the artwork and liner notes. Even the unaltered Star Wars came to dvd.
nice collection jason...i'm a interested in your akira and 7 samurai, although i don't own a laser disc player..it's sad that your saying goodbye to a part of the digital age history....you could have easily invited people over to enjoy them...the jason laser disc mini-theater!he he he!
yeah - I didn't sell either of those titles - as I looked around and equivalent DVDs are not easy to find for those two titles, so I guess I'll just hang on to them for now.
I never had a LD player, but my experience with DVD "special edition" packages and the like has evolved from obsession to indifference. The movie is what's important, not the packaging, although I understand the need to keep specific editions if it has content not available elsewhere (ie the Star Wars LDs).
Except for books - I'm a sucker for a pretty hardcover book.
yeah - packaging is not that big a lure for me anymore either, but the content of the supplemental or extra features is a big reason I pay extra for double disc DVDs etc. I love behind-the-scenes, making of, featurettes, and audio commentaries.
Someone...somewhere...on this planet, will pay exorbitant amounts of money if they are a collector of any one of those series(i.e., Jaws, Starwars, Terminator, etc.)
Really great stuff, lots of collector value... but the medium is totally out of date. A friend of mine has the same problem. He tried a sort of double player that plays both DVDs and LaserDisks, but the device didn't live up to any expectations and broke very soon.
do you still actively watch them? I think if I had lived here in the States the past 5 years and had my own places, I would have found a place for my LD player right next to my DVD player, but I'm not sure.
No, I don't still watch them. I've replaced most with DVDs, but I still have some music LDs that haven't been released on DVD. I'd like to transfer them to DVD. I don't have the LD player set up because I no longer have room for it.
To see that you had a laserdisk reader! It was even more expensive than the PS3 when it came out~! Man there were awesome anime on laserdisk~ XD Good luck selling them!
The discs stop being produced in about 2000 or 2001 and just a few years ago they stopped making players too. So you can't get new movies, but if your player still works you can watch all your old movies.
The laserdiscs i remember were the ones that had a plastic sleeve ( around 1985), Shame they are not in high demand, I know DVD's and BD are the in thing, you collection looks immaculate. Hope you can get something for them . Thanks for posting.
Very nice collection. I have seen Laser disc at all the Half Price book stores here in the Dallas,Tx metroplex. They look really interesting. I would buy them, but no money for a player. Also no space for a collection.DVD took over then, and Blu-Ray is paving the way.
great collection i know you can get the most money back by selling on eBay rather than taking to dvd/cd shop..thanks for sharing your great collection!cherrs
ooh man you wouldn't believe how badly i wish i had a laserdisc player! some of those collectors editions are beautiful! and like you said, they have such a completely different feel that just can't be replicated with DVD :) I wish you were having a nationwide garage sale! haha

yeah - I took pretty good care of my LDs - and I did keep some - for old time's sake. :)
TaishaJason 2 years ago
I would just like to say I have had a laserdisc collection for about 6 years now and they are fantastic, they look great on my new 52" lcd, I own 4 players and approx 140 movies, wish I had some of yours though.
ID492038 2 years ago
I guess because I love the format so much, I get a little sad when someone decides to get rid of their LD collection. Yet, I totally understand why you would do so. The remnants of your collection is still pretty darn good.
I don't currently have plans to get rid of my collection anytime soon even though I do collect DVDs. Plus, I'm not in any hurry to move to Blu-ray. At least not until I upgrade my display/TV.
LaserdiscFan 2 years ago
i couldn't bring myself to let all of them go, so I still have about 20 discs, but now have no player. :)

@TaishaJason You're in luck in MN, I am selling on Craig's List!

Real good movies on laser disc.
FrosChannel 2 years ago
Ok, this has nothing to do with movies, but I had to get it out there.
It's interesting how you and I both have lived in or around the same places in our lives. You lived in Texas (Plano, was it?) I lived and worked in TX, too. (Austin, for five years.) You lived in the Bay Area. I lived in San Francisco for many years (went to college there as well.) And of course, you lived in Japan. And I was born and raised there.. I have decided making my pilgrimage to Izumo Taisha one of my life goals!

Are you in San Diego? I'll be listing the one I have left in a Craiglist's ad this week.

laser disk blew me away when ifirst layed eyes on it. light years ahead of vhs
nyannyan123456 2 years ago
I still love Laserdisc.
If i could now i would buy the Pioneer HLD X9 that is on ebay. When i saw it..Wooow.. I new unit. This was a dream come true to me.
antinquities50 2 years ago
Really enjoyed the video Jason. Laserdiscs were the bees knees I miss them but not paying those prices! Living in the UK it cost a fortune in shipping as they were so heavy. I got rid of mine years ago and got next to nothing for them. I only have 2 left that I could'nt bring myself to get rid of: The Japanese disc of The Evil Dead and The Criterion edition of Halloween. Could you show the T2 box set in a bit more detail?
stevenandnicola123 2 years ago
sold it yesterday in the sale - it's a nice set tho...
TaishaJason 2 years ago
So much awesome stuff in there! You sure you want to sell them=\?
iFukuyama 2 years ago
I only ended up selling about 10 discs and the player - so I still have a bunch... not sure what to do with them now I can't watch them LOL
TaishaJason 2 years ago

That's so cool stuff! Star was FTW! ^_^ Your coming back for an extended stay? That is super awesome! I just signed my recontract for next year! Yay! ^_^
mostawesomestjes 2 years ago
Great collection :D Too bad I don't live closer :). One way to get people to come out to buy the LD's at the garage sale is a ad on craigslist advertising that you have LD's :D That's how I ended up getting most of my discs.
Medaka350 2 years ago
Sounds like a good idea actually. :)
STAY AWESOME! :)
cessnaace 2 years ago
did that and it worked - my first two customers wanted at my LDs and one bought the player.

It never hurts to ask. I see you got his video. I sent it out to as many people with LD players that I could think of.
STAY AWESOME! :)

I'm kind of embarrassed to say I have never seen a laser disc before. But they appear superior to VHS which makes me wonder why they weren't as popular.
DavidFausset 2 years ago
They where huge and often expensive. In Japan they where actually really popular. More then VHS at the end of it's life cycle, I think.
iFukuyama 2 years ago
some of it is marketing, etc. Part of the problem with LDs is that they're big, easy to scratch if not handled well, and you have to wait a moment while it flips sides every hour. But in terms of quality, they were light years ahead of VHS. Then someone came along with DVD and it was all over for LDs.
TaishaJason 2 years ago
whats a laser disc is it liek a dvd?
japanbyron 2 years ago
they both are optical laser read discs that play movies - but LDs are big - the same size as records (12") and can only hold up to 60 minutes per side.
TaishaJason 2 years ago
were they like dvds?
japanbyron 2 years ago
Laserdisc was like dvd in that it could do audio commentaries, chapter stops, random access, extra features like dvd but it was analog.
Unless the laserdisc does not have a dvd release, the only reason to have them is for the artwork and liner notes. Even the unaltered Star Wars came to dvd.
Knightmessenger 2 years ago
Well we dont even know yet If his gonna sell Akira,So i guess we gonna have to wait.
denitson777 2 years ago
I got almost all versions of Akira even vhs, dvd, blueray, import and stuff....but not that one!
OK,Lets start the auction for Akira!
denitson777 2 years ago
nice collection jason...i'm a interested in your akira and 7 samurai, although i don't own a laser disc player..it's sad that your saying goodbye to a part of the digital age history....you could have easily invited people over to enjoy them...the jason laser disc mini-theater!he he he!
DarkNekoStudio 2 years ago
yeah - I didn't sell either of those titles - as I looked around and equivalent DVDs are not easy to find for those two titles, so I guess I'll just hang on to them for now.
TaishaJason 2 years ago
I never had a LD player, but my experience with DVD "special edition" packages and the like has evolved from obsession to indifference. The movie is what's important, not the packaging, although I understand the need to keep specific editions if it has content not available elsewhere (ie the Star Wars LDs).
Except for books - I'm a sucker for a pretty hardcover book.
MrLeo34 2 years ago
yeah - packaging is not that big a lure for me anymore either, but the content of the supplemental or extra features is a big reason I pay extra for double disc DVDs etc. I love behind-the-scenes, making of, featurettes, and audio commentaries.
TaishaJason 2 years ago
Wow, you've got such a great collection. I'm sure there are collectors out there that are looking for some of these.
matman125 2 years ago
Someone...somewhere...on this planet, will pay exorbitant amounts of money if they are a collector of any one of those series(i.e., Jaws, Starwars, Terminator, etc.)
winDragon79 2 years ago
Hey,Jason Im interested in the Akira Laserdisc,a lot!
I would be cool to get a price :)
denitson777 2 years ago
i'd like to get my hands on that as well
bonetogo 2 years ago
I'm impressed by your collection. Good luck selling them!
iamryc3 2 years ago
i haven't seen a laser disk since like freaking elementary/middle school. holy crap. LD FTW! lol
lilangel8932 2 years ago
Really great stuff, lots of collector value... but the medium is totally out of date. A friend of mine has the same problem. He tried a sort of double player that plays both DVDs and LaserDisks, but the device didn't live up to any expectations and broke very soon.
42317 2 years ago
Jason, especially in that condition, ebay will get you much more
like you said, which random person will buy laserdiscs, let alone pay much
if you collect stuff you look/buy it at ebay, so sell it at ebay
Ishidasouken 2 years ago
I still have my laserdics. Not sure what I'll do with them.
annagulaev 2 years ago
do you still actively watch them? I think if I had lived here in the States the past 5 years and had my own places, I would have found a place for my LD player right next to my DVD player, but I'm not sure.
TaishaJason 2 years ago
No, I don't still watch them. I've replaced most with DVDs, but I still have some music LDs that haven't been released on DVD. I'd like to transfer them to DVD. I don't have the LD player set up because I no longer have room for it.
annagulaev 2 years ago
yeah - I have a few discs just seeing them now for the first time in 5 years I wouldn't mind watching, but I sold my player yesterday. LOL
I'll hold on to a few discs tho and like you, try to find a way to transfer them to a more watchable format.
TaishaJason 2 years ago
I did watch a few discs last year around Christmas time, and my 1988 Pioneer player still worked!
annagulaev 2 years ago
I have never heard of Lasordiscs before lol

I have been buying laser disks at hard off for a 100 yen a pop! got the entire twin peaks recently
murasakiryu 2 years ago
yeah - I've seen some great deals on fantastic discs here too. definitely a buyer's market.
TaishaJason 2 years ago
at least with akira ld, you're getting the streamline dub. the new dvd and bluray has a new one
GrapplerJMo 2 years ago
oddly, I don't think I've ever watched the dub - I'm a purist in that respect and like to watch my foreign films with subtitles as much as possible.
TaishaJason 2 years ago
To see that you had a laserdisk reader! It was even more expensive than the PS3 when it came out~! Man there were awesome anime on laserdisk~ XD Good luck selling them!
Ido013 2 years ago
I have that Brazil box on DVD. Love it.
emergencyincas 2 years ago
Oh, and I will admit that Akira's probably chief among reasons I own a motorcycle.
emergencyincas 2 years ago
yeah - luckily Criterion has made a bunch of their LD box sets into DVDs.

Awesome collection, but are LD players still around?
Graehaus 2 years ago
The discs stop being produced in about 2000 or 2001 and just a few years ago they stopped making players too. So you can't get new movies, but if your player still works you can watch all your old movies.
TaishaJason 2 years ago
The laserdiscs i remember were the ones that had a plastic sleeve ( around 1985), Shame they are not in high demand, I know DVD's and BD are the in thing, you collection looks immaculate. Hope you can get something for them . Thanks for posting.
Graehaus 2 years ago
I bought my buddy a Star Wars Episode 1 Laser Disc and it's still a big topic for discussion in his collection of Star Wars Stuff. ;-)
TeachinginJapanGuide 2 years ago
yep - that was one of the last big movies made on LD - they didn't ever make Ep 2 or 3 on LD.
TaishaJason 2 years ago
Very nice collection. I have seen Laser disc at all the Half Price book stores here in the Dallas,Tx metroplex. They look really interesting. I would buy them, but no money for a player. Also no space for a collection.DVD took over then, and Blu-Ray is paving the way.
PearlJammer07 2 years ago
great collection i know you can get the most money back by selling on eBay rather than taking to dvd/cd shop..thanks for sharing your great collection!cherrs
loganaustralia 2 years ago
ooh man you wouldn't believe how badly i wish i had a laserdisc player! some of those collectors editions are beautiful! and like you said, they have such a completely different feel that just can't be replicated with DVD :) I wish you were having a nationwide garage sale! haha
