I feel like an idiot, all these years I thought it was Tom Petty, and it's Cracker! However you gotta admit, the guy sounds EERILY similar to Tom Petty. Definitely an influence on the song, and music. Either way, a badass song and band, and Tom Petty is definitely a badass in his own right! I mean seriously, the "Don't Come Around Here No More" video. GENIUS!
A bunch of us are about to do "The Man Dance", prolly more like "The Man Mosh", if we don't get some clarification soon. Please someone with some knowledge help us out. Is this song about a girl or is heroin the "girl"? We have googled and came up with only more arguments. Proof positive, although I don't know where you'd get it except from the horses mouth, might save a life. Seriously though, it might give new meaning to the term "saving face".
@PickStar81 It is about a girl. but as poetic license the songwriters are tipping their hat to The poet Baudelaire and the band The Gun Club, which both compare a girl to addiction to opiates. Also the wizard of oz.
Lol, why would you care what some youtube commenter has to say about this song being a Tom Petty song. Let em say it was made by Hitler and proof Elvis and Paul mcCartney never landed on the moon. Idiots will always just be idiots, arguing with them is a waste of time, and believe me ive wasted my share of time.

I saw Tom Petty with the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan in Buffalo, NY in 1986. It was July. Hot. Say, 98. Dylan was wearing full-body black leather. He must have been sweating his nutsack off. I was OK. I was on a mixture of acid, shrooms and some sort of homemade hash. But I bet Dylan was sweating like a champ.

I think it's funny that there's such a 'controversy' over this song - I hope someday someone swears up and down one of my songs was originally an Acid Bath tune or something. That's gotta be a pretty heavy compliment when you think about it - people simply won't believe it wasn't written by Petty? Awesome.
However, really, this song has a certain grit to it, subtle, that just isn't there with Petty. He wrote this like Cash wrote 'Hurt' - come on now.

@crackerrocks Update: after Tom realized you guys stole his song, he decided to be nice and let you guys have it. Bad decision on his part, I'd of sued you guys.
@abradenk No. This is the original version, performed and written by Cracker. Tom Petty never played this song. I love Petty too, but facts are facts.

@crackerrocks LOL at people saying this is Petty. Offer them $100,000 to bring a TPHB cover of the song. It doesn't matter how much you offer because you'll never have to pay it.

@abradenk Before you bet, you should do some elementary research.

I can see where someone might think it sort of sounds like a Petty tune, but he DEFINITELY didn't write/sing it...just sayin

Of course Tom Petty never covered this song, it talks about hanging out with a junkie girlfriend.

Cracker does rock as did Camper Van Beethoven.
Tom Petty Never recorded this song and doubt if they play it.
Hope this settles the dispute.

Well, If Tom Petty did write it, I really don't recall a single bit of credit ever going to him for it. So.... I do beli3ve someone's mistaken.
