@Kari166 Yes. Afraid she will be alone. Afraid she lost control of Zan & all the plans to "get you the things I always wanted" were for nothing. Afraid b/c When Zan says "there is nothing to talk about", Virginia knows she means it. And @7:50, at the top of the stairs, there is some suggestion that alone, in that silence, she will have to face the consequences of treacherous actions. Until then, I think she thought of killing her husband as only a means to an end. Thanks 4 asking, lov BD!
"Deny your heads off ,what jury would believe you, I don't think you could find 12 men in this State you haven't cheated and hate you for it."...Ha ha
Xan will be as good wife for David- both of them fighting the good fight for decency, truth and justice. I do feel a little bit sorry for Regina as she stands at the window watching David take Alexandra away. Bette Davis`s eyes shows genuine hurt. Lorraine
Bette's acting is very understated for that period of film-making - I was really impressed - I hate to say it, but I mostly know her from Whatever Happened to Baby Jane (actually she was great in that too!) I also just saw her in Of Human Bondage as well - great again!
Sympathy possibly, but I definitely feel fear for her at the end. The one person who has held her in any idealized vision now has had her eyes opened, and all Regina is left with is any empty house, and a corpse. The only hope, over time, is that Xan softens and finds a measure of forgiveness. But who knows: William Marshall made clear his interest in Regina, she announced her intention of Chicago, so maybe she didn't end up so lonely after all...
@dvlaries My guess is that that brother of hers is going to tell Marshall a bit about his thoughts about how Regina's husband died. A hint of scandal would probably put him off. I think the implication of the ending is that she winds up a kind of relic sitting alone in that house with all of its ghosts.
@Jayjen35 Yes, and your suggestion is more in line with what the Breen Office would allow anyway. What Regina did -or, more accurately, didn't do- in that drawing room would today be classified as 'depraved indifference' murder or manslaughter. So to satisfy the Code, she both loses her daughter and lives from then on with the sword over her head of Ben maybe figuring out what happened, and maybe planting the same knife in her back that she put in his, Oscar's and Leo's.
Would it sound horrible if I said I felt sorry for Regina? I don't believe Regina is so terrible. She looks painfully hurt when Alexandra leaves, and at 6:46-6:49 she lookes as though she's on the verge of tears. Yes she is greedy and, to a CERTAIN extent, heartless, but I believe that she's begun to see the error of her ways. She wanted the world, she never had it, and if you think about it, she's lived a relatively unhappy life. Somewhere there's a heart in her. And I understand her.
@Kari166 Also afraid to be alone with the dead body of the man she let die. You see her glance at his bedroom door; Zan saw that and knew her strong cold blooded mother was finally scared to death. And leaves her alone in the house with her mess. It wasn't worth it.
@MrTracythomas1 I didn't forget --- what you mention is actually my favorite quote from the whole movie:"There are people who eat earth and eat all the people on it like in the Bible with the locusts. And other people who stand around and watch them eat."
OMG, never seen this Bette Davis before, her performance was sooo freakin good. Loved this!!!

Bette's performance is chilling. I dislike her roles in melodramas, but she kicks ass as these bitchy women.

@melizmatea The Letter is another superb bitchy Bette Davis performance aswell. All About Eve is another divine performance from Bette.

@504Diva, there's one line that confuses me.
"Why, Mama? ...Are you afraid?"
What is she suggesting that Regina is afraid of? Being alone?
