if you need a video to start a chainsaw, that is the least of your worries, had my 372 kick back at me, lemme tell ya you dont even see it coming...watch your tips gentlemen because if youre not careful itll be the last thing you see
you should always start a chainsaw with chain brake on especially if you are inexperienced in using one if it does not have a brake dont use it unless you are experienced with it
I disagree with this method because pulled back muscles are a real possibility. First you make sure the chain brake is on. Then you stand up. Don't put the handle between your legs, as that can cause severe pain to your private parts! Hold it in front of you, with your left hand on the forward handle bar, and pull the starter rope with authority (not tentatively) This is for left and right handed people.
You should always pull the cord with your LEFT hand using that method. Not all saws have chain brakes, and it's too easy to swing the bar into your left leg if you pull with the right hand. I remember a guy cut his left leg badly with an 090 by pulling from the wrong side.
What is wrong with pulling the starter rope with your left hand is that the saw has to be turned so that the bar/chain is very close to the right leg-I assume you are holding the front handlebar with your right hand. By pulliing with the right hand you have the saw engine between your body and the bar/chain to give you a safety factor. Chain brakes are a fine safety feature, so if people don't have a brake on their saw they should perhaps use a different method.
Most danger comes from trying to drop start high compression saws pulling the cord with the right hand. Just last month, a friend was trying to drop start my 070 pulling with his right hand. He lost control of the saw, and the bar hit his left leg. If the saw had started on that pull, he would have had some major pain. Pulling with the left hand, the bar IS close to the leg, but because of your arm position is not likely to touch your leg.
I assume you're talking about a Stihl 070. Man, that model is 42 years old or so. Not shock mounted, noisy, and you probably have the open spur (dangerous) sprocket on it. Time to move into the modern era with a new saw, before Raynauds syndrome does permanent and irreversible damage to your wrists. My original post on this topic said to first engage the chain brake when using this technique. I certainly don't recommend it otherwise. Therefore-no chain brake-no drop starting.
My 070AV is fairly modern, but neither it nor the 090 ever had chain brakes. I have a 090 from 1994 and it has no brake on it. Anyway, the 070 is only used for fun, or when someone needs a really big firewood log cut up. Even the AV model vibrates too much to use every day. Also too heavy for constant use.
Your 070 is modern, but it is the same 070 model that has been made for about 42 years. You can still buy brand new in the box 070's, made in Germany I believe. It is the saw of choice in much of tropical Africa, parts of Asia and S. America. I know from experience when they get to use a modern saw in Africa they embrace it totally, and are amazed at the light weight, quietness, and power. I have pictures of several new in box 070's in Cameroon. They love em-they don't know anything else.
Yeah, I have two of them. I think the basic design goes back to about 1959 or so, the old Contra. Pretty awesome saw in their day. Lots of them still in use out here, 070 and 090's. Guys use them for milling, mostly. They haven't been used for falling since the 70's. I mostly use my little MS170 for firewood etc. I never cease to be amazed at what that toy saw will do! I got it for trimming the brush, and ended up using it for everything. Cute little thing! Feels like a toy after using my 070.
In order to teach the video he should have all of his PPE (personal protection equipment on). There are so many steps to starting a chainsaw, the first of which is to make sure you have fuel and bar oil in the machine.
I am not trying to be negative in anyway, but I thought we were going to learn operation and maintenance? Same with the weed eater episode. not much operation or maintenance. Understandably if you new nothing about these subjects to begin with you would have a little more information. But, these certainly arn't expert operation and maintenance guides. Can the rest of these videos, witch might actually have this information be linked to in the "about this video" section?

I recently met a guy that severely pulled his back muscles using this method to start his saw.
treemaninOregon 2 years ago
If you pull a muscle just starting the saw you probably shouldn't be cutting anyways.
