  • Beautiful and moving! I found this video 4 or so years ago and have been returning yearly to hear it. It is by far one of the most beautiful songs posted on you tube. The singers are fantastic. Thanks for adding even more beauty to my Christmas. Merry Christmas to you!

  • Perfect.. wow I needed this song today, great job!

  • The best rendition yet

  • The girl at 3:20 doesn't even look like she's singing.

    Either way, this is amazing.

  • @Lordlimecat yeah it is I'm a first soprano so that's why it was hard.

  • I'm singing this song on Monday its not that hard

  • I had to do this at my holiday concert last night. It's a hard song to learn.

  • @reallygoodauthor7

Maybe depends on your part, I did bass on this song a few years back and it wasnt too bad. Certainly is worth the effort though.

  • Very nice

  • One of the best version I've heard...

  • amazing.. merry Christmas every1

  • This is the third year I have come here to listen to this. It is the most angelic sounding singing I have ever heard. I shed tears everytime I listen. Beautifully done. And I listen over and over.

  • Very, very well done!!!!!!

  • This is my 2nd year coming back to this page to listen. I agree I believe the best performace of this on youtube.

  • Magnificant... My favorite Christmas hymn, and so beautifully done.

  • This arrangement is beautiful. Probably the best I have heard throughout Youtube. Beautiful singers and an excellent director

  • I come back every year at Christmas to hear this wonderful rendition of Lo.........it takes me back to 1978 when I sang it with my high school choir!!

  • @rlouie Me too! We must be close to the same age!

  • This is the third Christmas I've been enjoying this video. I love this version. I was almost counting down the days so I could play this one!

  • I worked in that library for two years and got to hear these choirs in person. I just found this video and I am crying. I miss it so much.

  • Does anyone know who wrote Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming? Was it Brahms or was it Micheal Praetorius. I was told it was written in the 1500's.

  • Absolutely beautiful.

But, hey! SHUSH! You're in a library! :-)

  • Just stunning, the work done here can easily be seen. Good luck to all of you

  • What an excellent caliber of singers!

  • What an excellent calieur of singers!

  • this is so pretty , we did this for my church with about the same ammount of people and I thought it was awesome !!!

  • This version is kind of rushed. Anyone else think its kind of rushed?

  • @shazam15 I agree that it is a bit fast, but it sounds very beautiful. I prefer it slower. Something so beautiful doesn't need to be rushed....but very well sung all the same.

  • I sung this with my choir back in high school, I still remember the bass part. I miss those days.

    Merry Christmas. ;)

  • so beautiful!

  • I hate winter, I hate christmas. But I love this music!

  • @timo906 bummer bro

  • Strong Sopranos.. Beautiful.

  • Sang these in HS...some 38 years ago...still remember my baritone harmonies. Thanks for posting.... ☺

  • Wow. Makes my eyes sting.

And the fourth girl from the left end makes my biological clock tick

  • Outstanding - my favorite Christmas hymn.

  • Oh Christmas!

THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!

    Can't wait!

  • This is beautiful. My choir is singing this, and we're not 1/2 as good as these trained singers. Well done(:

  • I saw this back, I believe in 05. My son was a baby, and I used to play the DVD for him to relax him and put him to sleep!!! It still works, and he's six :)

  • @Daiseehead I might try this with my 7 month old. :)

  • so beautiful! Praise God!

  • I just love this video, do you have any more clips from this concert?

  • @ironbrigader It was actually a PBS special called Christmas at Baylor; I'm not sure if it's still possible to get copies of it or not.

  • That is the Foyer of Meditation in the Armstrong Browning Library. The accoustics are awesome and it is absolutely beautiful with stain glass windows that illustrate stories from Robert and Elizabeth Brownings writings. Much of that library is dedicated to the works of Robert Browning. There is in a hidden corner of that foyer a cast of the clasped hands of Robert and Elizabeth.

  • Beautiful!

  • perfection

  • That chord write at 5:27 is just, ahhh!! Wish they would've held it out just a little bit longer. Beautiful

  • Beautiful rendition of the original.. " Es Ist Ein Ros Entsprungen"

  • does Baylor make this presentation available too the public on CD? If so where can one purchase it?

  • Unfortunately, no. I've searched for it as well. You might contact the Baylor School of Music to see if they the program on DVD. They might. Amazon shows they have one VHS copy. It's a bit on the pricier side, though.

  • Beautiful! I faved it at my page for the Holiday season.

Here is some interesting information on the beautiful Armstrong-Browning Library at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where this was filmed.

  • baylorDOTedu/abl/indexDOTphp?id=45905

  • Most beautiful 2 songs ever written. Can't get enough!! They do a fantastic job. May God Bless all of you.

  • Gorgeous!

  • @molinmusic Love their blend

  • I'm in tears... Absolutely remarkable! God bless all of you! This is now on my "favorites" list!!!

  • beautiful, just beautiful.

  • im crying

this is the most beautiful thing i ever heard

  • Lo! How a Rose E'er Blooming remains perhaps my favorite song at Christmas - and I love listening to this recording over and over! Praise the Lord!

Isaiah 11:1, 2a--"There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him ..."

  • fantastic. I can't find a single thing I'd even think about changing. And I loved the very Madrigal-esque long 'N' at the end. Well done!

  • I LOVE this! :)

  • Great job keeping the fast tempo. God bless you all. I can't stop watching...

  • Wow!

  • Merry Christmas!

  • Beautiful! Awe-inspiring!

The brass band I play with is playing 'Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming' on Sunday for our concert - while I am not convinced that this translates well into an arrangement for a brass band, listening to this has inspired me and I am now able to play the piece with more sensitivity and insight.

I have been listening to this over and over again :-) simply beautiful singing!

  • This is amazing! I have chills. Merry Christmas, everyone!

  • I love, LOVE, love this hymn Lo' How a Rose E'er Blooming and the rendition here is flawless, awesome, SWEET.

You can hear each and every word. How blessed is that?

  • Doesnt anyone think this version might be a tad too fast?

    Of 'Lo, How' that is.

  • Maybe a little. Still, the beauty of the piece is maintained at this tempo, though I'm not sure that would be the case if it was any faster.

  • yeah when we sing it we slow it down tremendously. but it does sond good like this too.

  • ahhhh this is amazing. i really love the lyrical aspect of the piece.

  • the meoldy of "lo, how a rose" is beautiful, but i agree with you, the lyrics are what give this song its stir, in my opinion.

    my favorite:

    It came, a floweret bright

    Amid the cold of winter

    When half-spent was the night.

  • This is absolutely stunning. I've listened to it 6 dozen times.

  • This is among the most exquisite performances on YouTube. THANK YOU! I've put a link to you guys on my website - Grace4Life (dot com) - and have added full lyrics for both selections. I've also cautioned the listeners to grab a hankie before they hit play! : ) LongJnSilver, London UK

  • im playing this for band

  • My concert choir is singing this for the winter concert! I love it! :D

  • Nice

  • exquisite...

  • What Teamwork and harmony! Three cheers for the director who has the creativity to shape each voice and lift the songs to heavenly heights. --{-@

  • The selections and the voices are truly a great givt from God.

  • makes me tear :' )

  • im singin this in choir! i luv this song xD

  • That was so beautiful... like for real.

  • so nice - very pure, well done.

  • I am really blessed by this music!

  • Two truely wonderful pieces of music done back to back only to be filled with such grace while leaving a person being humbled.

  • This video is outstanding. What fine discipline and tone from such a small group.

  • I totally love this song. This video is BEAUTIFUL and it's on my favorites now!! I luv this sooooo much. I love singing it at church!

  • Bellissima! A wonderful performance of one of the most beautiful choral pieces ever.

A definite favorite. Thank you for posting it.

  • oh christmas was so wonderful in 2008, reminds me of all the church visits i did :-)^^

  • one of my favs........just beautiful

  • Muy lindas voces y un buen ensamble, pero falta mas fraseo y dinámicas, suena muy plano.

  • Beautiful recording indeed!! Lovely choral singing (though I vehemently disagree with slowing down the Ralph Vaughan-Williams piece every time a major phrase concludes - that's totally wrong!!), excellent acoustics and very lovely recording!!

The only "fly in the ointment" is that "The Blessed Son of God is sung in F-sharp major instead of the F major it's written in!! Annoying to those who happen to possess absolute pitch, alas...

  • The proper meaning of "a capella" is "in chapel style" - to get truly unaccompanied, you really need TWO P's!! Furthermore, "Chorale" has a different meaning (applied to a choral melody within a piece).

I suggest you check your spelling and definitions (also, I'm using British instead of American spelling).

  • No doubt it is annoying for those with perfect pitch. The transposition was done for tuning purposes.

  • this is one of my favorite christmas songs to sing in chorus. we sang it in mads at my highschool for our feaste[:

  • This is, for me, the most beautiful piece of Christmas music ever written (Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming). Wonderful performance.--arnie113

  • I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (Dec. 28), we sang this as our Hymn of the Day. It is #272 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. Just thought I'd share. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and has a Happy New Year.

  • beautiful performance. first hymn is one of my favorites

  • This wonderful performance is matched only by the grandeur of that impressive room. I see from an earlier post it is part of the Baylor Univ. library. I'd be interested to know the history or use of that chamber if anyone knows.

  • It was filmed in the Armstrong Browning Library's Foyer of Mediation.

  • A beautiful version of both of these hymns, and in such a beautiful setting. Lo How a Rose may be my favorite carol, too.

  • God bless...so wonderfully sung, with reverence and intention.

  • this is my favorite christmas carol by far

  • This absolutely stunning! A little quicker than I like, but the intonation and pitch of the singers is impeccable! What a delight!

  • There are a few pitch problems, all at the beginnings of phrases. But they are all very forgivable errors. This is overall a fine production.

  • i really miss the browning library....it was my favorite spot on campus.

  • Among the loveliest performances I've heard of this beautiful carol.

  • This advent hymn was sung when I was at Mass last Sunday and it brought me to tears. Such a beautiful piece about our blessed mother and her son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.

  • Ah, well do I remember shooting this video late at night (artificial lights outside coming through the windows). And here I thought there were no videos of me on YouTube... :)

  • hey, "yudo know jack... and more," this is Baylor? which one? where? why? In Indiana? [ummm, if not, no offense intended] Well done!

  • This group was the 2003 Baylor University Chamber Singers. Baylor is located in Waco, Texas.

  • Hey, yudonojack. This is Leo. Who may you be?

  • Beautiful song, beautifully sung.

  • I sang this years ago in a large choir in a huge gothic cathedral with an incredible pipe organ, in front of a congregation of about 800 people. One of my great memories! The Bass part brings tears to my eyes!

  • Great choir

  • LEO!!

  • this is absolutely the most beautiful Christmas song ever written and this group has sang it beautiful as I have ever heard.........absolutely incredible dynamics!!!

  • that is very very beautiful...we are doing this song in church and it is my favortie to sing ( I am tenor and sometimes I sing alto...it depends on the song)....the harmony of this group is amazing. God Bless

  • Wow this is absolutely incredible...there isnt one thing i would change about it...not one voice sticking out...not one strange note...i would kill to be in a group like this...fantastic..u guys truly have a gift from God :)

  • Beautiful!!!! Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, absolutely Wonderful!

  • We are doing these pieces as part of the Philharmonic performance here in Erie and all i can say is wow.....gorgeous stuff....

  • :( i did this song 2 years ago. and i am still obsessed with it. it was sooo much fun singing and its so emotional.. just the chords and stuff. awesome awesome awesome job

  • my high school choir is doing this song 4 christmas. I can only hope tht we won't totally screw it up.

  • LOL.. you guys will do a GREAT job. I remember doing this in high school choir and being a wreck; the song went over well.

  • BRAVO!!

  • -First of all, the acoustics are fabulous - what a delight it must be to sing in that room.

-The lighting and camerawork are as good as it gets, and the quality of this video is incredibly good.

-The ritard at the end of "Lo.." is so gorgeous. I could possibly die of old age listening to *just that* over and over. But I'd die happy.

-Ditto for the lovely dissonant chord at 5:39 to the end.

-And lastly, were the vocals prerecorded, then lip-synced to accommodate the camera work?

  • I had the distinct pleasure of singing with this fabulous group. This performance is actually part of a program called Christmas at Baylor. You can catch it around Christmas time on PBS, and there are some other great musical performances on there as well.

To answer your question, yes, the vocals were prerecorded in the hall, with the singers lip-synching while the cameras did their work.

  • @DrMalPracktiss

Yes, the vocals were prerecorded and then the singers lip-synced. Thanks for the compliments! Such a terrific space to sing in.

  • Absolutely Amazing!

  • God I just love the Armstrong Browning Library. It has the best accoustics. I miss those days. '03 was Junior year. GO BEARS!

  • Beautiful

  • You know, I'm actually rather surprised by the sound quality. Very nice clarity for youtube IMO.
