Miles loved her, you can see it. He also loved that she knew the song Ella Fitzgerald made famous, and that he often quoted in his version of Human Nature.
She adored Miles. They were the best of friends. Even these many years after his death, when she speaks of him she gets really, really emotional. Miles was great. Chaka is great.
I'm so happy to see the footage of this. I bought the Davis Montreux box set just for Chaka's 2 mins. It features many other performances of this piece Miles did. Yes Chaka's bit was very rough, impromto I'm sure (is that lyric sheets she had). But this is jazz not pop music and for some one like her to embrace it as she has been doing, WOW, and she handles it. The liner notes Miles wrote about this performance expresses the beauty and vision he saw in CK......
I dare one of the plastic 'divas' of today to attempt this tho. took heart. you have to appreciate true art which isnt always perfect but interperative. this is ART
@anyplace1 this was impromtu, she WAS very nervous singing for Miles, but did you read his liner notes from the box set...what a compliment. And this is jazz, not pop music
@cmelmoneyman nervous, yes you would be if invited on stage by your idols-mentors in such a high stage....and as you see she was. This wasn't her show, it was Miles!
I heard this on the radio 5 years ago when the Miles Davis Complete Montreux box set was released....but seeing the performance...U DID IT!!!!! Thanks 4 posting!!!!!!!
OMG! This is great! Listening to this song for so many years, I could tell Chaka didn't know the words and she just confirmed it by looking at a lyric sheet when she came out on stage. (LOL!)
