  • 12:40 Battletoads title screen anyone?

  • Does anyone know the name of the mech FIGHTER for sega cd? I cant remember much, I believe you could select different weapons and you found on the surface of different planets or their satellites("moons").

  • btw Mark, the very first robot cartoon was Tetsujin-28 (known in the US as Gigantor) released in 1956. Tranzor Z (aka Mazinger Z) was released in 1972.

As for the first transformable robots, it depends which kind. The first transforming one, in the form of combination, i believe is Getter Robo from 1974. The first transforming robots in the form of actual transforming would be Super Dimension Fortress Macross (i.e. Robotech Part 1) in 1982.

  • This soundtrack MUST be audiosurfed!

  • sega cd's openingmusic sounds like super metroid ;D

  • Mark, if you love side-scrolling SHMUPS...please review Sturmwind when it comes out this year (2012) for the Dreamcast!

It looks beautiful, and it's coming out on a system that has been declared dead for eleven years now. That little-white-box-of-awesome will never die...

  • Bangai-O

  • 12:45 WELCOME TO WARP ZONE!

  • its like arrow flash but even more epic

  • Where can I buy the soundtrack?

  • @3DSStrider Get the game and put the disc in your cd player. It'll play the music from the game disc. That's how i have mine anyway :)

  • The mech design and music kicks serious ass! XD

  • this convinces me to get a sega cd eventually

  • The music at 12:42 sounds very similar to the title screen theme of Battletoads for the NES.

  • I play this using kega fusion its F**KING AWESOME

  • i paid $40 for this back in the day...LOVED IT! God of Thunder...or is it LIGHTNING? but that game is the BEST of this genre!

  • Comment removed

  • I like giant robots that blow shit up and White Snake. I must play this game

  • So many bullet hell games on the sega genesis! How many can one have? No wonder ya don't see these games as much anymore who wants to play them now that they got super played out all those years back?

  • @shadowhexogram

I'm hoping the same thing happens to the FPS genre. Oh, and the shmup genre is still alive thanks to the 360.

  • @shadowhexogram It's most likely anyone born in 1990 on up wouldn't have a clue so this genre could easily make a resurgence and from the looks of it on XBLA and PSN, that is happening. Thank goodness for that. Just like the FPS, SMUPS will be around forever along with the racing and fighting games.

  • The practicality of a transforming robot. Not only can you drive it to the grocery store but it will also teach that douchebag who parks his hummer h2 across the last 3 available parking spaces a lesson.

  • YES! A STIG REFERENCE :D

  • I know a fair bit about mech shows and I can say that this draws from at least 4 very heavily :P

    Fun looking game, though.

  • Thumb up for the Stig mention!

  • This game is better than sonic cd

  • I love this game a bit hard though

  • Yeah great music but I HATE GAMES LIKE THIS. THey are all the same. Side scrollers like this.........I mean realy. THe only thing ive seen done different On the ???? DreamCast.

  • Who thinks Highway to the danger zone would work?

  • reminds me a bit of turican!

  • 9:12 The planet Zyst from Highlander 2 has a z in it and it SUCKS! But for the most part they are cool.

  • This must be a Masami Obari mech Design game he is to me prob next to Hirano and mikimoto best char Design and mech ever badass game :)

  • best intro to a video game ive seen on a sega cd

  • Awesome mech designs!

  • This similarities to Gundam are too hard to notice.

    Zeus = Zeon?

Earth Conventional Fleet = Earth Federation Fleet?

But this does have better music. Most games today don't have music this good.

  • I like this intro best that the other ones.

  • I'd complain, but an ad for Android seems appropriate.

  • He Must Of Had A Little Captain In Him That's Why He Is Stuck In That Position LOL.

  • I wish the robot would've had some frames of animation but it's still a good game.

  • @Obviously hehe..yeh he just floats forward in an infinite "foot on a stool smoking a pipe"stance..And he's called Barry ;)

  • AVGN Could of taken it easyer on the sega CD

  • this looks fun. ill have to try it out! :)

  • i logged alot of hours playing this as a child. BUT I DO HAVE A QUESTION FOR SOME OF YOU GENESIS FREAKS OUT THERE!!!!! I have some games bought in japan i guess they are MEGADRIVE games. I also had an adaptor i dunno what its called but i know it had a little boy on it with coke bottle glasses and a hat. It used to work but now it doesnt?? Where can i find a new one? does anyone have a megadrive adaptor?? i really miss some of the megadrive games i still have..been searching for a decade

  • you should be sponsored by ebay i always go there after watching your videos

  • I believe that the Sega CD was a very underatted console

  • @AVGNROCKS1996

Its not... Its peace of crap... Only 2-3 good games...

  • @pufixas There were many gems out of the 200+ games for Sega CD. Sonic CD is the best platformer of all time, Snatcher is a visionary artistic achievement, Lunar 1 and 2 are as good as any of the Phantasy Star games, the enhanced version of Earthworm Jim is a masterpiece, Final Fight CD is the most perfect version of the game on a console by an incredibly wide margin, Mickey Mania is better than Epic Mickey, Robe Aleste is one of the top 5 best space shooters. Not to mention Space Harrier.

  • @AVGNROCKS1996 Same goes for the Saturn, library of import games were amazing.

  • This game looks great. I have the choice between this and Robo Aleste as my next shmup, and I am leaning towards this one, even though I usually prefere vert

  • i still don't understand how this add-on was such a big fail

  • @MalpaPL Basically, it was an overbundance of horrible FMV games, complicated to make games for, the CD technology hasn't been perfected yet, too expensive, and the interest wasn't there yet...

With that said, CGR made me think about getting one! I so want to play Android Assault and Sonic CD!

  • robotech = win

  • the opening sequence kicks ass.. imagine back in the early 90's if you saw it.. it'd blow ur mind

  • What's the Classic Game Room Theme Song?

and whats that site sega/16 or something he mentioned

  • i cant find this game on ebay or amazon for less than 30 dollars =(

  • your intro reminds me a lot of depeche mode.

  • @abysslord16 That's what I think too. It sounds like Enjoy The Silence. I want to know what it's called.

  • @Jarren202 yeah, its very much like enjoy the silence. maybe he will read all these, and give us an answer.

  • The opening movie reminds me of Techno Man when he powers up his shoulder laser blasters and lets loose into a boss. The games looks and sounds good. I will be sure to get it if and when I get the SEGA CD.

  • @Jerrid3 grizzly bears!

  • like most of the posters i agree that soundtrack is fantastic!

    Wonder if its downloadable....

  • @FuzzyScotsman What isn't?

  • watch at 240p

odd enough, 240p has better picture than 360p because of the scanlines on the youtube player

  • Comment removed

  • I beat this game back in the day. the last stage was a real bullet dodging marathon. Overall it was one of my top 3 games for the SCD. The other two were Soulstar and Robo Aleste

  • in japan this game simply named Bari-arm and thats original name of the game!

  • I love the music.

  • Yeah this music is amazing

  • If you want an ass-kicking soundtrack, try the Terminator on Sega CD.

  • @razorslice17 Oh hell yes. I loved that soundtrack. I downloaded the whole thing a few weeks ago.

  • kinda reminds me of turrican for the Amiga, i didnt have the first one when i was a kid but turrican 2 kicked ass!

  • Check out the music at 12:36. It's a cross between the "Transformers: The Movie" soundtrack and the pre-solo part on Def Leppard's "Animal." Unbelievable!

  • The only thing missing that would make this guy orgasm is ninja.

  • its like Optimus Prime fucked a Zero Wing cartridge! how is this better than Sonic CD?

    TOOT TOOT SONIC WARRIOR FFS.

  • Why are you people saying gundam rip off, it's a Macross clone. It's not like giant robots are exactly a rare thing in japan.

  • totally a gundam ripoff.

  • Wow, looks like a gundam ripoff. Those space colonies and the android robot things. Seems like a nice game though, very interesting.

  • reminds of Lords of Thunder ...at least the robot/cyborg part and awesome music

  • Random i know but level 2 really reminded me of scrap brain zone for Sonic.

  • looks like metal slug,

  • Anyone else think the guy speaking for the intro sounds like the guy who does all those anime character voices for shows like Bleach and Code Geass? It just sounds like it with some computer effects to cover it up.

  • This looks a lot like Tekkaman Blade. I need this and a Sega CD NOW!!!

  • @Vi0LenTMoodSwngs The nice thing is Sega CD emulates very well. You can buy the game to add to your retro collection and pop it into your PC cd/dvd drive and go nuts. Kega Fusion will do the rest. :D I loved this game as a kid, and I still love it. I think it may be my fav shump.

  • The music sounds like something u´ll hear on a Sonic game, but good nevertheless

  • Love that soundtrack

  • 07:05

thunder force Ii' Mega blast anyone?

  • Transforming robot day is Botcon.

  • Raideen was the 1st Transforming robot. Same style of design for Tranzor Z ( Mazinga Z).

  • this is the only way i am connected to 8/16/32 bit-era, badass music by the way

BIG ASSROBOT cool to the fullest level

  • that song at the beginning is the most BA of BA songs

  • I LOVE the cheese 80s rock of Sega CD and Turbo Duo games. Sadly missed in todays orgy of licensed music yuk!

  • oh my god the 90s were fucking awesome

  • I regret getting rid of my Sega CD and by far this game of all....FUCK! Great god damn game

  • @PerfectZer0

    THIS GAME AND NOT SNATCHER!?

  • This game is beautiful. A real shmup classic.

  • wow impressive!

  • this sountrack would be great on a sonic game

  • the soundtrack for the last level was amazing.

  • this game is sick

  • National Transforming Japanese Robots Day! XD

    BTW Great Review mark! =]

  • isnt this game alot like arrow flash?

its a game identical to this one for the genesis, but its music was annoying as hell ( dont know about any other music in the game other than the first stage never got far in it) it consisted of the same stuff, you have a ship that can transform into a robot

  • What's the name of the intro song? it sounds amazing

  • Lords of Thunder was another good shooter that came out on the Sega CD, although it was impossible to find, and overshadowed by the Turbo Duo version.

  • my cat 'archie' pissed on my mega cd 2..just sat right on top of the disc lid and took a piss.kept it a secret till i noticed a funny smell up in the ol games den.couldnt belive it when, after following my nose i noticed the funny brown congealed stuff coating the console and the puddle in the disc tray.cleaned it up and it still works tho!amazingly so does archie although i couldve brokeh the effin cat in half at the time.this game looks ace by the way!

    gundam mecha+shmup+widdley riffage=win

  • @dannyofthededd that cat must really love nintendo

  • @goldeneye0019 hehe..i think she just really hates me!! maybe cos we accidentally gave her a boys name..

  • @dannyofthededd liar liar pants on fire!

  • @bierbuik honestly..why on earth would i make up such a crap story??

the cat is in a trunk in the attic cos i aint got many games to play on it and the mega cd is under the swing seat in the back garden looking shifty..er..hang on.

  • @dannyofthededd So you deny the lie...exactly what a liar would say! Hmmmm...

  • @bierbuik a liar would have said something marginally different i'm sure of it..anyway..does it really make a diff if you believe me or not?

    hmmmm.

  • @dannyofthededd Your story is amazing, yet disgusting lol

  • @Quartrez yeh man..god knows what kind of bad cat juices are floating around our house..especially when electrical appliances start warming up post soiled....;)

  • @dannyofthededd NO DANNY...

I PISSED IN YOUR SEGA CD MUH HAH GHAAAAAA!!!!

  • @yourLIFEendsN0W hehehe..you rotter, but your weak wee wee juices failed to stew my sega!!!!

  • It looks like Gundams

  • @zwh7 Dangaio

  • looks like thunder force IV but without all the slowdown!

  • I got this game when it first came out when i was 7

  • ...so that would make it a cyborg lol

  • @xlive247 he is right about that one lol

  • Do you people think this is better than R-Type? I ask because I've never heard of this game but I love R-Type.

  • this is just like R-Type,loved that game. But never finished it,got stuck on the level where snakelike things everywhere.

  • Wow! Amazing music! And the game looks pretty good! Is it available for Sega Genesis?

  • I like how it's a side scroller that also scrolls up and down making the levels bigger

  • WHOA! that is the best game I've ever seen on the sega cd.

  • The sega CD was short lived because games developer thought that the future of gaming was interactive FMV games.

  • is because the tech wasnt old enough yet when sega used it.

  • omg! what an awesome music!

  • must have for mega cd/ saga cd

    lots of fun

  • Cool looking game, but the whole transforming plane to robot thing had been done before in arrow flash :3

  • I wonder why older transformers games weren't like this game

  • then dont watch it

  • As much as I'd like to keep every game system I've ever owned, I just don't have the space for it. I was married with kids for awhile and I'm sorry but there wasn't room for a zillion game systems when you had kids' toys, clothes, and other stuff overloading your closets. I aint gonna lie, for the most part I used the invincibility code when I played this game most of the time because I just wanted to listen to the music. I'm a huge game music junkie, especially for TG-16 CD-ROM & Sega CD games.

  • The main thing I remember about Tranzor Z was that one female robot that shot missiles out of her boobies, lol, you won't see that kinda crap on television these days, especially not in a kids' cartoon. But about Android Assault, I owned the original American Sega CD version and played the hell out of it, sometimes I think of getting a Sega CD again on eBay just so I can play it again.Watching your review made me feel all nostalgic and brought back years of memories I had with this game.

  • Just saw an episode Tranzor Z.

    It was so cool!

I really need to catch up with the show.

  • I raised my hand!!! yay

  • hand up.

  • Nice game!

Try also Lords of Thunder, for SCD too.

  • lol whitesnake that game has some awesome music for the time

  • i luv topgear

  • sega games always have funky hip music!

  • Did I ever mention that your intro music is very kewl and suits perfectly and has a HIGH recognition factor!

  • I think you got it wrong, you said a living robot would mean its actually a cyborg. thats wrong. a living robot is an android, a cyborg is a robot that was a human once and is now kinda a hybrid

androids are entirely artificial and cyborgs used to be humans

  • is is relevent?

  • nah but he specifically mentioned it =P

  • No an android is a robot that resembles a human. For example it has two legs and stands upright.

  • ya well in the best case it should resemble a living human, in sci fi

but thats what I said: android = artifcial, cyborg = somewhat human origin

  • B00BS!!!1111

  • transformers! lol

  • Android is actually a robot designed to act and look like a human. Well... That android soesn't fit the regulations. It's a... Transformer.

  • The Stig rules

  • awesome dude its like were summoning satan all over again

  • it looks like a arcade game

  • the music at 3:20 kinda reminds me of a bit of music from sonic adventure. great music

  • This was a way mediocre shooter. However the music in this game was epic. It has some of the best music in a video game ever made. The game is worth buying just for the music alone......and you'll get to shoot some stuff if you want, but don't expect greatness there.

  • I've just tried it, it's really good.

  • Johnlewisbrooks<---BEGINS BANGING HEAD!

    XD!

  • good luck!!

  • aw u watch top gear awsumm

  • "Duck! or you'll be just another shrimp on the barbie!"

Targeting an Australian market, eh? How...random? ^_^

You want that picture and quote on a T-shirt, admit it.

  • 6:48 Mighty Zeus!

  • The music in the opening reminds me of Fragile Allegiance...that is until it goes all J-Metal, of course.

  • Looks like a Gundum game

  • now i gotta go watch Robotech.
