I think the staging of this version--Petula Clark weaving her way through the audience--is very effective. It somehow makes the desperate appeal in the song even more powerful and direct. Petula Clark sings the song with a beautiful wistfulness, as opposed to Cilla Black who lets fly with some real bitterness. Both versions are great.
Does anyone have a link to Petula Clark singing "Downtown" in French? I heard it a couple of times years ago, but never found a copy. It was incredible!
Wow. Multilingual and a gifted singer and cute as a button too...I think I'm Jealous!! I SO MISS those days when talent stood on its own and singers didn't take off most of their clothes and act like sleazy burlesque acts like they do now...
Manifique! I've always loved this song...and have always adored the beauty & voice of Petula Clark....what a delight to hear this charming song sung in French. THANKS so very much for posting this...or should i say "MERCI" to the max, daddy-o! You've MADE my day & my weekend! :)
Historical note: The young woman smoking was typical and acceptable but the young man with the sunglasses indoors must have been considered antisocial.
