  • @TheClaydon, look for a folk club near you. There will be one somewhere. You don't need a band. These songs were originally sung without accompaniment.

  • It just goes to prove you don't have to be popular to be great, you only have to be great.

  • Listen to a maestro at his best. Luke's voice enters your very soul.

  • Comment removed

  • as long as u can hear him he'll never die

  • The lyrics to Unquiet Grave were collected in the 18th century. Some believe that this song may date back to as early as the 14th century. During this time popular belief held that mourners could speak with their loved ones 12 months and one day after they had passed.

  • Never have I had but one true love, in cold clay she doth lay....

  • @jukenna Completely agree with you, Luke really was a great singer, I haven`t heard a singer with so much feeling in the voice,

  • "Luke Kelly was a very, very special talent whose greatness i think has not yet been fully recognised."

I agree. There is such a raw, sweet beauty in his voice. This and Raglan Road are a treasure.

He should be recognised among the very greatest vocalists.

  • Some said it before me,thanks for the vids and songs of Luke Kelly. He's now gone for many years, but still not forgotten, and i think never will.

    Regards

    Marc

  • This is by far the best stuff I've ever heard!!! you irish guys can be really proud of that magnificent traditional music and singers you have (and had)!! oh and thanks a lot to kellyoneill for sharing it, otherwise I probably would have never got to hear all these songs by luke! Kisses from Austria!

  • @Lossarnach23

  • truly a beautiful song

  • pretty cool. you should also check out the Ween version, Cold Blows the Wind.

  • Even tho i recently discovered his songs I'm genuinely sad he is no longer amongst us in both body and soul.

I generally listen to metal, but hell..Luke Kelly was(and is) the greatest singer and a good man, i'd die protecting this statement! Even when his time was growing short.. he sang.

  • quite simply the most beautiful song ever, sung by the most soulful singer who only sung songs he belived in, luke kelly, period.

  • Thank you for posting this. What a beautiful version, and the penny whistle is so good too.

  • my grave will be very unquite if luke kelly is not played above it.

  • Jaesus you did have a few aidolirish. Well done.lol

  • I also agree with Dubb. Luke had a unique talent, which every time, when i listen to his songs, makes me simply cry :(. He sings so gently and beautifully...

  • The most amazing performance from the greatest singer of them all. Who else but Luke Kelly could manage to break your heart just by the sound of his voice. As long as he's remembered, he didn't die.

  • i couldnt agree with you more my friend

  • Saf57: I agree if youtube were ever to disappear I don't know where I would ever find some of this music again. My saved youtube bookmarks are 3 pages long.

  • My favourite song of all on Youtube.

  • all said mate it s a masterpiece

  • That it is,a masterpiece only viewed 64000 times.I'll claim 4000 of those.Seriously I have the utmost sympathy for those many people who have not heard Luke Kelly sing this song.

  • The man could squeeze emotion out of every word. Wonderful.

  • the real deal. this song is as good as music gets.

  • Pure genius i could never get bored listening to luke kelly.

  • Outstanding. Captures the Irish ability to musically express sentiment beautifully. Luke will never be forgotten!

  • How morbid,how tragic,how beautiful

  • danke luke - wunderschön . . .

  • I was bread and buttered with the Clancy's and Tommy and now I know who the got all most of thier matrial from, besides the bog's, the pub's and the Thanyou God the sip the pour the wait-Guiness

  • I'm still so pleased that Youtube exists - and that there are people like Kelly O'Neil to remind me of my long gone friend. It has been so strange for me to discover just HOW loved this guy was. My teenage "very soft spot" - and it took me long to realise how privileged I was to have met and known him. RIP.

  • ;-)

  • You were indeed privileged! The greatest singer ever to come out of our little nation!

  • we will never see the likes of luke kelly again

  • Why do I cry? Is it the song combined with the voice or is it the sense of loss of an artist.

  • daved1948

This man had a true and incredible talent to move anyone who has a soul with his passion and feeling, it’s a gift given to so few. He had a gift that could not be bought or sold, he chose to let us all have glimpse of this gift, but as with too many gifted people there is always a price to be paid and it had to be LUKE who paid it, this is why we must never stop playing his songs and giving others a chance to share the gift he shared with us

  • This is so beautiful it makes me want to cry.

  • The only singer i ever heard who could really get across the feeling of pain and grief just from the sound of his voice. Luke Kelly was a very, very special talent whose greatness i think has not yet been fully recognised.

  • @dubb1995 Those who know about these things truly do! There may never be his like again - I know of no one now.

  • @dubb1995 You are right!! There is no other

  • @dubb1995

  • @dubb1995 I think his greatness is, finally, coming to be recognised, in Ireland anyway... Luke is truly a world treasure, the only reason he is not recognised worldwide is that far too many people have never heard him sing

  • @tony10396861 It's because he's not top 40 material. His music demands that you sit up and listen, not bop your head mindlessly. Of course, we know that he's infinitely better than that crap on the radio, and those who listen to that stuff really wouldn't know good music if it bit them in the ass anyway. Thank goodness for YouTube, and our ability to create our own playlists, or I'd certainly go mad.

  • @carollizc Some of it does, plenty of his stuff is good craic and easy to listen to as well but still amazingly well sung. in my experience most people dont actually like head boppin top 40 shite, if this kind of thing got back on the airwaves people would appreciate it I guarantee it

  • @tony10396861

if people would really want this than 1 why does this have like 1/1000 of the vieuws top 40 music has.?

2nd, why does no1 play it?

3rd why is it not in the most downloaded charts?

  • @rotinvrede Are you for real? did you read my comment? The vast majority of people outside of Ireland, and too many Irish people aswell HAVE NEVER HEARD HIM SING, thats precisely the point!! These guys WERE in the charts back in the 60s and 70s. And Im not talking about this song in particular. I accept that you have to sit up and listen to this one. I was referring to their music in general, some of which has 10 times the views this song has. Didnt say it is popular, said it WOULD be!! :)

Ulli

  • i would lisen to this man all day the best ever

  • Always reminds me of my best mate who passed away last year. Beautiful.

  • @77pob rip

  • one word magical

  • dam you luke, you set the bar to high for us mere mortals.

  • poor guy - photo here must've been close to his own grave. his spirit here is strong as ever. love this guy's music

  • I'll be the 1st to second that!! Kelly has brought joy back to many of our lives.

    God bless you Kelly xxx

  • Definatly one of my favourite Dubliners songs. Amazing group. 5+

  • beautiful song beautifully sang as usual.

  • One of my fav's from Luke, beautiful, haunting & heartbreaking.. Makes me proud to be Irish..

  • I play guitar and sing and I recently added this great song to my repetoire. It is probably the most haunting and sad ballad I have ever heard and Luke Kelly is the master ballad singer to have as a role model.

  • We love you Luke from Wales

  • I learned recently that this became Luke's favourite song when he was very ill, and knew he didn't have long to live. Is it any wonder he sings it as if his heart is truly breaking? It almost makes the song difficult to listen to, but i am drawn to it time and time again. Unbearably sad, but completely captivating.

  • "So make yourself content my love, til death calls you away".

  • Luke Kelly...My hero.

  • go raibh meile maith agat luke...xxxx

  • -god bless you Luke. The all centrrurys thrue sailor.

  • I love luke Kelly but this is one creepy song,I lovi it.

  • sadly missed gentleman god bless

  • an angels voice.......... i knew Luke on Sheriffs street.... he loved Ireland... he loved Dublin....... erin go brea....... slan luke....

  • Another belter.I watched the Dubliners live at Vicar St dvd and was amazed at the amount of young ones in the audience (I'm getting old ha ha).Even today they are packing them in with Ciaran,Luke and Ronnie watching from above. The music lives on.Cheers

  • luke kelly, its even hard to sum up what a remarkable voice the man had,no one will ever challenge you as EIRE's number 1,youll always be that and your music and memory will live for ever and be passed on to the next generation and so on.god bless you kelly.

  • 17 years old listining to luke and the dubliners since im 6 best performer best voice that ever walked the streets of dublin

  • kudos to all you kids out there who listen to great music and musicians like the great luke kelly. and thanks kellyoneill for all these great posts.

  • its so good ,thanks

  • i acquired myself a few whisltes, a fiddle, flute, and banjo. oh and mandolin. (had the guitar knockin around anyways) and every moment i get i'm playin what i can, picking up their songs and teachin them from what i've worked out to my dad. the only thing we haven't attempted is the 5 string. we'll leave that to the master himself.

    xxxx

  • Its nice to know that there are others my age (i'm eighteen in july) that enjoy luke kelly as much as me. it's not easy for me to survive in my tropical island of Puerto Rico and have to explain to people that my favorite performer of all time is an irishman with a red afro. when people ask me where i got the idea for my hair, i just tell them "the same as luke kelly, except my 'fro is dark" and then they ask who luke kelly is and i tell them "the greatest of the dubliners, the best folk group"

  • so much for my luke kelly fro... got a haircut last week...

  • An heart-rending song brilliantly, superbly performed. Sweet agony for the tears in my eyes - I'm grown man - a requiem for my darling departed wife.

  • Like Joe Hill, Luke Kelly will never die. Whenever and wherever we here his voice or see the powerless struggle for their rights, Luke Kelly will be there. He is immortal.

  • THE GOOD DIE YOUNG.

  • and old english folk song put in to folk history forever by lukes version.

  • God just wanted Luke back, that's all. I think heaven will sound like this.

  • Such a beautiful song . . . it gives me chills, it does.

Luke Kelly? Dead? Impossible! Just listen to the man sing. His body may be worm food, but his spirit will never die. Never.

I'm seventeen years old and I have a hard time explaining this kind of music to my parents; lulz. And also Luke inspired me to take up the banjo.

  • Wow, Stonegolem42! A teenager starts listening to folk music and has a hard time explaining that kind of music to his (or her?) parents! That must be a rather unusual scenario.

  • Well, Im 18 and live in Sweden. I have the same scenaro, my parents had only heard about the Dubliners before I started to explain, now all in my family listen to them :)

I also plays banjo, and the only songs I can play is Lukes songs :)

    R.I.P Luke

  • Well, I like english /Irish /Spanish /Italian folk music (I am Italian) and I am 17 in july. I use to listen to rock music or metal... but I really like this genre.

Oh, and german folk is not bad, too.

  • Can you suggest some good German folk, I'd like to give it a listen

  • It's just so markedly different from anything they grew up listening to that they can't really understand it. Also they can't understand a word Luke says in his Dublin accent. But this kind of music is absolutely timeless.

I can now play a grand total of four songs; slowly but surely progressing . . .

  • I'm seventeen, as well. We're a rare breed, man. Power to you for having culture and an open mind. E-five!

  • I cant, it wasnt me who done it,

if people dont like a comment they can give it a thumbs down, if 6 people do it then it is automatically hidden,

personally i dont find it offensive either.

  • kellyoneill this has been the best thing ive found on the net ever, thanks for all the luke vids/songs, hes the greatest voice theres ever been bar none!

  • Your very welcome, thanks for watching :)

  • I 100% agree with Ianasone =)

Ps, Rest in peace Luke and Ronnie

Bet Heaven is rockin with ye

  • the band is nearly back together now .

  • How dare this be marked as spam. Humour in death is meant to be something of an Irish motif isnt it? Good song.

  • i meant this in no way to be offensive , i am a dubliner myself and to me they were the best group ever, the remark i made i stand by , and thats not to wish short life on the remaining original dubliners, but it is true to say that they are once again almost complete and brilliant again , now di ya's understand me............

  • I don't know who marke your post as spam it seems silly to me.

However, no matter who they bring into the Dubliners it will not be the same. The original members cannot be replaced. Who for instance could replace Luke, or Ronnie, or Ciaran, or for that matter Barney (long may he live) They were the original and IMHO the greatest of them all.

The people in the group now may call theselves the Dubliners but they are not the real Dubliners (excepting Barney of course)

  • cheers man, john sheehan also is a surviving member of the old school.......

  • 25 years today since you left us Lukey, thank you very very much for everything you gave us. Hope to meet you when my time is done ..... Save a place for me if possible.

    Hugs from Holland. XXX

  • Just back from Dublin after visiting Lukes grave (on Friday) and although it was a cold and wet day it was still the highlight of my trip to Dublin. The fact that Luke lies in a fairly unremarkable grave says volumes for the man ....truly a man of the people. The 'unquiet grave ' is IMHO the greatest song I have ever heard and I never tire of hearing it. It shows Lukes voice in a different light.. truly magnificent.
