A very interesting story. They retired him after he was well and let him roam free around the fort. He was very attached to the man who took care of him. When the man went to visit a woman friend, Comanche knew where he was and let him know it was time for bed.
Yes, I saw the Walt Disney movie about Commanche in the 50's with a young Sal Mineo...as the young Souix warrior who lost his pony to the Army.....but then I read the true story...and eventually went to the University of Kansas and saw ...the "brave horse"..Commanche...RR
@tvcat1 Yes, it is interesting. I would hear this song when i was a kid but never knew the whole story because i thought he was Custer's horse. I certainly didn't know he was stuffed and in a museum in KS.
goto to the website and read what it says about thebattle of the little bighorn. that is where i got the information. i am really into indian stuff and horses. i also read this in the book "trail of tears."

Isn't 30 years an extreme age for a horse, cheech, even if he's well cared for? Thank you for the pictures of Myles Keogh and the details about the life and death of Gustave Korn...thanks, in short, for an interesting and educational video.
@richjohnf He was stuffed as a tribute and is located at the University of Kansas Natural History Museum. I read after he died everyone assumed he would be preserved so the best guy around did it but they never paid the bill for him. He wasn't the sole survivor. There were other horses. The indians didn't take him cause he was badly injured.
Sad song, on the bravery of the 7th. Major military blunder on Custer, thinking he outnumbered Bighorn. Though ill say Custer was outstanding, though not as good as Stuart in the Civil war.
@Mr19thIndiana Custer didn't have to die. The other men in charge....Reno? and the other one were cowards cause they knew he needed help but they hated him. I read somewhere, the indians said if "backup" showed up they would have turned and ran there by sparing the 7th.
@cheech37 Your right! I forgot about the other Generals. They've done nothing. Lots of men died on that engagement for nothing. Nothing except honor. They did become heroes remembered today for the Last Stand.

I thought Comanche died when he broke his back after being lifted to his feet, and the sling broke?

@AnywhereButHere09 No, that didn't happen. I'm going by the story that is told how they found him.

@cheech37 No, I mean in old age, not on the battlefield.

@richjohnf They say Comanche was not taken because they believed it was bad luck to take a horse if the rider still held the reins.

@McGrenzer my 2 cents worth.. 30 years is extreme, but my mare was 331/2 years when she passed.

@richjohnf He was badly injured and nursed back to health. Funny thing, the soldiers gave him beer and he liked it.

@tuppycream I'm quite aware of that fact. I list Johnny Horton under the tags. You need to read the description.
