Those Americans like it when we point out we weren't actually losing, but that we appreciated their help, and so was forged a special bond....... no they can't spelll it.. lame fucks.
This is second only to the theme to Patton for me, as I made my poor grandmother sit through two showings of each of them, in the same yr I think. Bless her, you could do that in theatres back then. This music does get me pretty emotional as well. As an Yank, I can only say thank GOD for the RAF.
I cannot even begin to explain the level of emotion that this music evokes in me. I have always admired the Royal Air Force pilots and indeed the entire military of the UK. In point of fact, the British conducted some of the most audacious, innovative and courageous operations in WWII. Although, some of them failed or were not as successful as envisioned by their planners.
I have created a music album which charts this same period of British history:
Britain At War - Darkest Hour by Rhesus Monkey. The album covers the Prelude to War, The King's Speech, The Battle of France, Dunkirk, The Battle of Britain, and of course The Blitz. I've also created a video to accompany Churchill's address to the United States in June 1941: 'The Old Lion'. You can view that video within my YouTube channel.
Ron Goodwin wrote some fantastic music, this is up with the best. To the Dutch, thank you for you everlasting gratitude. I think our boys back in 1944 and 45 would have said, "We are just doing our job" Thank you to the 13 year old Dutch lad in 2009 who gave thanks, to the 'hairy arsed vetrans of 30 Corps and US 82 Airborne at Graves Bridge, for his freedom. It moves me to tears every time I think about him.
If you want to understand how the Battle of Britain was won, I recommend David E Fisher's "A Race on the Edge of Time". It is very easy to imagine that RADAR was obvious but the actual story is incredible. I probably saw a RADAR scope before my family had a TV set. Dad was Chief Instructor at the RCAF Radar School in the mid 50's.

@TheRobloxfighter One group of people who are my heroes (to this Yank girl) are RAF Fighter Command. Winston was right - "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."
@ppqq66 hey, don't forget the impact of the Hurricane. During the Battle of Britain, the Hurricane shot down more enemy aircraft than the spitfire and ground gunners combined.
@StarCraftPilot That was simply because if the tactic was available to them the spitfires engaged the 109 for which the hurricane would have been outclassed and the hurricanes would then attack the accompanying bombers who were no match even for a rather basic fighter like the hurricane. That said we should remember all those who served in the RAF fighter pilots and ground crews.

@richeadey The main theme was by Ron Goodwin. Walton had composed music for the film but it was decided to only use part of it in the flying battle montage about 2/3rd through the film.
Hello: 9 Irish pilots participated innthe BofB out 2900. Nome died, Eire, although neutral provided many volunteers for the the British forces. Without supplies carried by the British Merchant Navy, Eire would have starved
@ignarzpop a lot more than nine took part,a lot left ireland through the north and to avoid complications put their nationality as british, check out the book"spitting on a soldiers grave"by robert widders and you will see why
There is a British military tradition of adopting things from enemies. For example, the bearskin hats worn by the Brigade of Guards commorate the defeat of Napoleon's Imperial Guard at Waterloo, who wore bearskin hats. I think the Britiah "adoption" of the Aces High theme is in keeping with this tradition, even though the actual music came from a film, and never actually belonged to the Luftwaffe.
Must admit, the 'Aces High' theme is really good and - in the context of the movie, seriously ironic. Also ironic - the Brits seem to have adopted this theme as tier own, given the armed forces CD's I have.
@Frances386 Quite right. I served in the RAF as an officer for 18 yrs and when we had a dining in night the band would play Aces High as we went into dinner. Great days!
Your final image features the flag of the Republic of Ireland who were neutral, although admittedly many citizens of Eire fought in the British forces....
@ignarzpop eire was"officially" neutral under devalera`s regime, but,in truth it was far from it german servivemen were interned, british or other service men were sent home and many irishmen fought and died for the free world during w w 2
@RaleighRoyal Thank God there is someone who prefers this over the "Aces High March" which is all about the Jerries and not about the Victors. What's wrong with these people I ask you? Btw: I'm a Dutchman.

what are the planes at 0:34? Are they mosquitos or Beaufighters?

@StarCraftPilot
I think that's actually deHavilland Hornets or Sea Hornets at 0:34, similar to the Mosquito in construction, but a single-seat fighter.

I do find this so much more inspiring than the 'Aces High' march that seems to get so much more attention. Splendid stuff.
RaleighRoyal 2 years ago 18
@RaleighRoyal for me each "march" has a different feel.. the luftwaffe one is dramatical and mighty..
the RAF one for me is victorious and hopeful.
i think people like that dramatical feel but both are very good classical sounds.
