On Feb 7 2009 the worst firestorm in the recorded history of Australia hit the state of Victoria. 173 people died, countless hectares of forest destroyed, some of which still haven't recovered. We were all in shock. The following Tuesday Leonard Cohen performed in Melbourne and I was one of the privileged to have been a part of that event. He started his show by acknowledging the pain we all felt & then went straight into Anthem. It will remain one of the most moving moments of my life.
He puts an indicting lens on the world's misery, spreading awareness. To dwell on it, not a good thing, but making people aware, helping them remember, I believe to be paramount. The world is better for him and his contribution to global consciousness. And his poetry ("while the killers in high places say their prayers out loud") cuts to the bone at volumes that can't be ignored, without effort or complication.

Leonard Cohen, ladies and gentlemen!
