@brazil10able Late 60's early 70's he was at his peak and about a stone lighter, twice as fast, twice as sharp etc... Beautiful and unique player to watch, and in my opinion for those years, the best ever to play football.
@Queenwraith .,...Hi, yes I agree....he was my boyhood hero...I was 10 in 1970 and played on the fields every night in my MU shirt. I remember being in my room in the build up to the 1970 World Cup and discovering a picture of "the greatest player in the world".....Pele! I had not heard of him then and I could not believe anyone was better than George Best. Gordon Banks has told me to my face that Pele was much better...but I wonder how Pele would have faired in the English league in the 60's
@brazil10able Totally agree. I'm 31 but my dad and grandad who's not with us now said he was just sensational around that time, so different seeing him play live etc, unreal close control, balance, speed, courage, could tackle, both feet, good in the air, imagination, audacity. I tell you, if you search here for - george best northern ireland - and watch the short clip that's 1:13 - over 40 years ago, the footwork and unique style I still haven't seen the like of.
@Queenwraith ....I am begining to feel old and everyone thinks Messi is the pinnacle of skill now....he is good but one footed..as was Maradonna...I feel its between Pele and Best and you can see from my YouTube monica that I am a massive Pele fan and I think he probably was the most complete player......but my heart says George
@brazil10able I can't argue with that! As far as achievements and stats go he was truely the best, alot better than Maradona and Cruff, not even a debate. The problem George's legacy has is that he was from Belfast, like me, never got to show his skill on the world stage, and after initial success in Europe MUFC went down the toilet for a while, so even his European stage became limited, and the nightlife...
@Queenwraith last comment before I get carried away!.....I am from Oldham and my childhood memories of Brian Kidd coming to our school and all my friends being Utd fans make me biased (only slightly!)..in 1995 I was stood a foot away from George and said hello to him at a MU reunion Virgin Media event in Manchester city centre ('68 team)....I rember thinking like Pele's marker in the '70 final that he was just flesh and blood like me.....but he was a bit more than that!
@brazil10able and good looks with no management robbed him of his potential. Best wouldn't be in the top 1-200 players of all-time if you look at it like that. It's other greats, experts, fans that seen his genius through that as a truely special gift, from the age of 15 playing at the end of his street, a natural football genius. Memo to Sir Matt from Bishop 'I've found you a genius'. I also agree that Pele was the same but an effective genius in other ways as a player :-)
Uncanny footwork by Mr Best. A wizard, a true star. He played to be great, to be beautiful, to show how football can be among the great arts. A man in control, dreaming while awake, shining in the dark. One of the all-time grea Irishman. I say that as a Scot! So let's see some great football today (28th May 2011, Scotland vs Eire).
I would rather watch George than any other player...and all the greats know in their hearts that they couldn't match him at his BEST.

George was way past his best here, but still had so much grace and elegance.
67-70 he was the greatest player that ever lived, shame alot of his genius was never caught on camera.
