it just goes to show u that an an actor may not show up on the list of greatest actors of all time, but if they had a list of most interesting and entertaining actors in an interview u would have to "give him the prize".
I had the great pleasure of meeting and chatting with the late, great Mister Jonathan Harris. It was at a convention in Altlanta, GA in 1987. He was a very distinguished, humorous, and gracious gentleman. I had many questions about his career and he was more than happy to discuss it. Long Live Doctor Zachary Smith!
The greatest Smith moment was in the episode with the knight and the dragon. William lost his faith in the world when he learned the knight was making up stories. Dr. Smith hatched a plan to restore William's faith by seeing the knight fight the dragon, but William wouldn't go to the cave where the fight was to take place. Smith said "For the first time in my miserable life I'm telling the truth, but you won't believe me."
well Harris said in Starlog they offered him a bit part playing Dr Smith's boss, but Harris was too much of an egomanic and said he didn't do bit parts and didn't believe that they might have expanded his role and that it wouldn't get cut on the editing room floor. He felt he created Smith as he evolved into on the series as if it was 1967 again. I liked the film, and it helped boost interest in LIS again and made us not forgotten anymore. I wish they would be a proper reboot of it again.
@3dartistguy Thank you . I too miss the original Lost in Space! p.s. I had the pleasure of meeting him before he died he was so funny. His house walls were covered with movie posters he was in. While I was at his house the gardners were there and he made a joke,"they just mo,blo,& go!" I will always remember that day!: )
Wow, you actually got too meet and go over his house? wow. One of the best moments of Lost In Space was during the second year when he was genuinely concerned about Will Robinson's state of mind because of his lies. its too bad they didn't do more of that type of thing more often. Another occured during the third season episode the Time Merchant when Smith confessed he was a 'weak man full of human fraility" and he and the Robot had to get aboard the Jupiter 2 so the family could be saved.
@3dartistguy Those sound like good episodes. It's been awhile since i have seen them. I remember the creature costumes which he makes fun of in this interview and I really got into the dramatic music (john williams I think) Yeah he made sure I got a signed autograph of him and B9 ! As i type this I'm looking at a johnny Lightning editio of the jupiter 2! Take care and thanks! ~john
@1bol390 You can catch 80 episodes of this classic tv series on "Hulu.com". Season 1 & 2 have 28 episodes each, season 3 has 24. I been having my own Lost In Space marathon over the last couple of days thanks to Hulu's autoplay feature!
@KDsonlygirl hahaha,I just found them too a few days ago. I watched a couple and a couple of "land of the giants" there too, another irwin allen show. Thanks! Hope you are enjoying them as much as I am! : )
Good gawd Jonathan Harris was awesome! He was so funny and a total class act. I met him at a convention and he was the most delightful man I ever met.
@littletimes thanks for finding and posting--what a interesting funny ,brilliant actor he was--he wouldve made a great side-kick to any talk show-a true natural comedien..
I can't believe how amazing this interview is. This is usually the sort of thing that you expect to be awesome and it disappoints. Not so in this case. Jonathan Harris is brilliant.
Even if Harris didn't like the movie, you think New Line Cinema would want him to say that publicly? It was a big production: nostalgia for the old audience, a modern upgrade for the new. That's twice the audience than any normal film. A lot was riding on it.
Outstanding. Absolutely outstanding!

He wasn't in the 1998 film because he said 'I play Smith or I don't play.'

Wow. Turns out he didn't need to do any acting at all for his role as Dr. Smith. He's the real article.
