  • This isn't about AIDS or war. Get over it, people.

  • Soaltrain93 you are 100% correct. The video was never intended to dismiss the non-American casualties. It was made years ago out of frustration for the US citizens that seemed to demand war without thinking what it meant to families left behind. Too many innocents on all sides have died. Too many soldier's lives also wasted fighting a war waged by a corrupt administration.

  • This video obviously is about war with the pictures involved, the song in general maybe about aids but this video shows nothing but the death of american soldiers, i am compassionate about the death of any human being but lets think here? for every american solider dead, how many middle eastern men and women have been killed? war is not a gentle thing, what we call terrorist is another mans freedom fighter, for every 'terroist' is killed how many innocents is killed? just remember that

  • @bootes53 - I'm well aware of the original meaning of this beautiful song, as are many others who have commented. You must miss a lot by assuming you are smarter than everyone else. Poetry and lyrics are very powerful, and often can be interpreted differently. And yes, Janis Ian is aware of the use of her song in this ANTI-war video. She's extremely awesome that way. Peace.

  • The song, "When Angels Cry" is not about war--it is about AIDS! Do some research on her songs and listen to the lyrics. I wonder if she knows someone used a copyrighted song to make a war video.

  • I got moved by this video.

I will keep pray to God, hoping that will help those soldiers who fight for our freedom in the middle east.

  • Great song!

  • Thanks for posting this. I first heard this song on an album to raise awareness around AIDS. I've always thought of it in that context, but it works beautifully to highlight anyone's loss, especially if it seems senseless. I marched to Stop the War on Iraq before the invasion, and I marched as much to save the lives of young soldiers as anyone. I hope we reach critical mass soon in believing that war is simply never again an option.

  • i'm sorry but if you take the queens shilling then you sign your life away to serve that Queen (or president ) and country at all cost so this vid is point less unlessit's point is to show the futile point of war and the waste of life there in, but as i am trying to say soldiers are there to die end of story nothing more nothing less

  • tough to hear but true

  • thanx for taking the time to reply don't you think it's time our politicions brought all our boys home better still never have sent them out there but like i said Armys fight and soldiers die i know what you were getting at but needed to just make people less informed aware of the harsh reality of life

  • yhhf

  • I feel for them. But at least their sacrifice is honored.

But I also feel for those who died in vain, those who gave their all in war, only to have their nations reduced to ruin & their people slain like vermin. I am talking about the Nations of Central & Eastern Europe. And to have their memory stained. They are either damned as war criminals or mocked as dupes & brainwashed drones.

Sry, I just wanted them to have their moment.

  • You're right.

People often forget that war is heck, and that the other side's soldiers have their own families too. They probably made their own choices, just like the invaders, both fighting to defend their country. The differences lie in which side is actually doing the defending, and which side controls the news outlets.

  • I wish my country respected its war dead as much as the USA does. Even when you guys disagree you still stand together. Its what makes you great.

  • I really love this song! I just wish that the video showed the pain and suffering of the people in the Middle East.. civilians, like mothers and children, dying because we believe our truth is the only truth.. Mourning death is not just an emotion that is felt by Americans. Americans tend to degrade people from other cultures to having emotions of animals. Until people start building at commonalities instead of fighting over differences, wars will continue. How sad..

  • I agree that their is incredible loss and suffering in the middle east, and on a much larger scale than what we have had here in America - Nothing in this video was meant to diminish that at all.

  • I was not knocking this video.. I love it! I did not mean to diminish it's message at all. I had been viewing some of the footage from the Gaza Strip.. and more recently, some footage on retaliation against the Jewish people. I am saddened that all of us are just insignificant pawns played in games of war by world leaders. May all our loved ones return home soon.. alive and in good health.

  • nice :)

  • The title and lyrics are definitely not militaristic, folks. Clearly laments the whole war thing.

  • Everytime I see this it really hurts...........glad we stand together Yanks n Poms and all

  • The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Spc. Adam M. Wenger, 27, of Waterford, Mich., died Nov. 5 in Tunnis, Iraq, of injuries sustained during a non-combat incident. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 76th Field Artillery, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.

    The incident is under investigation.

For more information the media may contact the Fort Stewart public affairs office at (912) 767-2479

  • None would hesitate to die to defend truth.

Is it truth you send my son to defend

I can't see my son's coffin arrive in

    the light of the sun

but rather I receive him alone,

in the darkness of night -

    under cover far from

    the public's sight.

How much longer will you take to do what's right?

  • News flash i have had many friends come home wrapped in a flag .. and they are heros .. and you sitting at home under the freedom soldiers died for say they are not is a chicken shit thing to do .. you should call them heros and then thank them for having the guts to do something you clearly can't .. remember they are not fighting for G.W. bush .. they fight for you.

  • They are our Heroes. You and they need to be clear on the brainwashing. I did not send anyone to Iraq. I was not asked to vote for the "War on Iraq". And you know in your heart as well as the majority of Americans, this war was not about 9/11. Do not make the citizens of this Country feel guilty. The guilt lies in the hands of the Administration of our Government.

  • Let there be peace. In You Tube Commentary, and in the world. If you had lost like the people in this video, you would have dignity in your statements. And a rock in your heart.

  • Instead of saying hateful insensitive things in comments here, why don't you leave a link to videos showing the Iraqi pain, too? I welcome that. But I will delete any more hateful comments that only show demonstrate that the commenter hasn't paid the least attention to this video... fanaticism on both sides is dangerous.

  • PAY Attention and quit using Republican hit and run tactics like leaving comments without even taking the time to see what you are commenting on.

And finally - This isn't a video so much about the soldiers as it is their families, and the great toll on our country. I also mourn for the untold millions of dead and displaced Iraqi Citizens, the orphaned children, the HATE that this war has generated. There is nothing in this video downplaying the casualties on both sides.

  • I'm sorry that this video is attracting such negative comments now. There is NO ONE more against this war/Bush and his administration than I am. Anyone who thinks we don't need an army is wrong. That Bush has abused his power in deploying this volunteer army is the point.

Should we be in IRAQ? NO.

Do I think the US soldiers, or their families should be ridiculed or dishonored? NO.

  • News Flash.

HEROS DONT COME HOME IN BODY BAGS

  • What do I think of the people who suddenly are intimating that I believe otherwise, here, in this video's comments? I think they are ruining their own cause (more)

Instead, Write to congress, Call - ask them to WAKE UP & get us out of IRAQ, to impeach - Attend protests, VOTE in the upcoming election...

  • a Hero is just a four letter word

  • as a sign of mourning...german army

  • 'love is the four letters word'

  • Fuck Bush, and fuck all of you people who think that our servicemen and women are dying for some noble cause. Bush is sending them to die to insure corporate security in a hostile region. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool. If you think their cause is so heroic, you go over there and put yourself in harm's way, and never come back. Tell your family that you're sacrificing yourself to spread democracy. I'm sure that'll make them feel better.

Fuck you pro-war assholes. Fuck you all.

  • You aren't paying attention... This isn't about being pro war or pro bush - I am not either. It's about the tragedy of this Iraq situation - no matter what your politics are.

  • fuck you stupid insensitive jerk. you know nothing about what the army has done to sacrifice themselves just to make this country free. how dare you. grow up immature retard.

  • You stupid bitch, you do your idea how they are bombing innocent people killed, some rotting in the worst place .. that they deserve. :)

  • @xenosagalover8 @desha035

This isn't a chat room- do you both think this is the place to discuss why this is happening instead of just remembering the loss we have taken because of this? If you want to fight and increase the hate in this world feel free to join the armed forces. There is no time left to put energy into hate . For the fact i am tired of people fighting when this is one place people should be supporting one another if nothing else. maybe think first...

  • Our Hereos..........and, in a way, our martyrs.

  • the nazi soldiers were also martyrs then :)

  • I live in the UK and although where i am things a pretty disconnected from the war, i really felt this video, very moving indeed. Im so sorry for those who've lost people dear to them in this war.

  • This stunningly moving video broke my heart .. and no .. we dare not stand by in the face of this hideous and needless war that has claimed so many lives. Support our troops, bring them home, end the war, work to see Bush and Cheney imprisoned for life, for crimes against humanity.

  • Eaxctly!

  • Hell Yeah!! All those sons and daughters growing up without parents and not valid reason why.

  • i first heard this song on g.h. in 1993. i had just lost my dad to aids in nov. 1992. ten years later i lost my mom to cancer. i was so moved by this song, i made the lyrics my own and sang it to my mom in i.c.u..i am so grateful the staff let me bring my guitar in and sing it for her. she died the next day. this song will haunt me for the rest of my days

  • i adore the u.s.; my father's purple heart adorns my desk. but my country has been selling young people into the murderous slavery of war all my life. my father, a war hero, would have been horrified to see the iraqi tragedy--slaughter for the sake of oil. yes, the "love" of country has cost many americans too much. if elections here cannot be cleaned up, we all need to pack up, or be party to murder--of our citizens and theirs. my condolences to all who have suffered so terribly.

  • this song is amazing!!! my cousin came home for christmas and i didnt get to go see him. the first day he went back to iraq the blackhawk he was in was shot down. RIP Gary Brown!

  • I am so sorry about your cousin - RIP Gary Brown

  • what is striking within the song is the judgement on us all line.

in the uk we watched, regardless of opinions on the war, in disgust at those fake christians saying the war was a judgement.

the same as some said about aids.

the beauty of this song is that, like other classics,it's bigger than what we think it means.

it's a song that anyone who loses someone can get meaning from.

    lovely photo compilation and song.

    thank you

  • I agree about the meanings, all possibilities, of the lyrics ~hugs

  • So here is a bit of number crunching in light of this beautiful song by Janis Ian which is in fact about the HIV pandemic and death within that context - not war. It is of course awful that 3907 U.S soldiers have died in Iraq since 2003 but it is a big world out there - bigger than the U.S.A - Aids deaths in 2007 alone? 2.1 million. A.I.D.S orphans in Africa total 12 million.

  • And that is sad and unneccessary, too... even one death from war or AIDS is a tragedy that could be stopped, if ignorance and hatefulness was removed from the equation

  • The political leaders bang the drum and the people wave and stomp the chorus. Then the price is paid - on both sides. Our sorrow, our fear, our chains, our freedom. All won by war.

  • let s not forget that the very freedom that allows us to view and comment on this video is not free. It was hard won and paid for by our veterans. God Bless all our Veterans! Never forget their sacrifices. You don t have to agree with the war to love and appreciate the sacrifices our veterans have made for this country.

  • I agree. It *IS* Possible to be against this war and still respect our troops...

  • no war is holy, if you understand a single word of the christian philosophy you should know: god doesnt want his children to kill each other - - - under any circumstances... it doesnt matter if your attacking in oder defend yourself...

  • My heart breaks for our soldiers, died and alive. What are they dying for now? A man who is too small to admit he screwed up and how the power to continue. My prayers go for our soldiers and their families.

  • guys, who will come back from iraq, say main words:,mama i come home (song ozzy osbourne the best)

  • For the folks on here saying our troops are not fighting for freedom, I dare you to say that to them. May God Himself have mercy on the soul of the man who tells a US Marine he is not fighting for the freedom of his country.

  • I don't mean to be insensitive. The people who suffer are those who survive - on both sides. Those who do the killing must also do the dying. STUPID.

  • Do you have any idea how many innocent people die also in the war?

  • and might you not realize how many more innocent will die if we did not fight?. I mean really, they could just nuke us all but the UN forbids that.

  • As more appropriate background music could I suggest the Haliburton corporate theme tune blended with the screams of dying men, women and children? A bit more appropriate don't you think?

  • oh yea...yo this message loud and clear in ur head u dumb soilders- nobdy cares about you!!! if anyone did- you wouldnt be down there :- would you? but aniways, u doing good job- those bum iraqi boys attacked us, killing people. so if u get killed , kill at leat 20 of them b4 they touch you.

    peace!!

  • Why are they dumb. I don't agree on this war but without them the government would pick anyone they want and do you want that? Would you like think that this might be your last day? My husband is thier and he is protecting your freedom.

  • i hate to tell you this, but your husband isn't protecting shit. we aren't there because they threatened to take our freedom. he is over there risking his life for no reason. he might die. his death would be for no reason. do not act like this war has something to do with our freedom. because it does not.

  • I said that i don't agree with it either. But I gess I have to support him.

  • I hope he gets to come home to you soon. ~hugs~

  • Thank You so much

  • This clip is not about being against the war or not. It's about paying respect and if you don't have it for these men and women than move along but don't disrespect. You don't talk about people that are no longer able to defend themselves. Please if you want to argue about the war and state your opinion don't leave it at a place where it won't do anything but hurt others that are trying to remember and honor their loved ones.

  • can you read? is this a capability that you possess? obviously not. it is out of respect for these men and women that i post these comments. they are NOT fighting for freedom. we are sending them to be slaughtered like animals. we all want to sit back and cry over the ones we have lost. Get up and do something!!! these men and women are dieing for no reason and we do nothing but cry, rather than ending the slaughter. It is time that you start honoring those that have been lost forever!

  • you are so pathetic that it makes me sick. it is disgusting. you want to sit back and grieve over soldiers that died in a war that they themselves were against. and you will grieve tomorrow, and the day after that!! you will grieve until something is done about this hell we have spread across the planet. but cry. cry like the fucking coward that you are.

  • do not try to shame me for being against the war that killed them!! apparently i am the only one here that truely feels and respects the soldiers. i pray that god spits on your grave when you die!!! it is people like you, those that refuse to stop this war, whos hands are covered in the blood of our children!!

  • Please. I am against this war, but I do respect bour troops and mourn their loss. That's why I made this video. Our country will always need dedicated servicemen who are ready for action when called upon. The challenge is in making sure that the people who have the power to send them to fight are not corrupt, like the Bush Administration is.

  • and how the hell are we going to have dedicated servicemen when we need them if we keep throwing them away like garbage on something like this bullshit war?

  • God Bless You.

  • really moving and a beautiful song who's meaning crosses the boundries.

  • I wanted to see the video to this song and ran across this video. It's beautiful and something you should be proud of.

  • Thank you!

  • Yes, it is galling especially when you realise that 4 million! kids watched some teenager lip-syncing to a crappy song on YouTube. One heart at a time. One mind at a time. Good work :)

  • Not if it reached people, it wasn't - What hurts is proud youth continue to die & in MHO they should never have been there to begin with.

  • That must have been rough to put together, looking through all those photos.

  • The real meaning of war. A moving testament to the vanity of leaders.

  • This video deserves an Oscar. I wish it would be shouwn in all TVs around the world. Congratulations!

  • Thanks... Please feel free to spread it around. I think maybe it's too painful for many... But this is the point. So many people hurting, so many lives lost

  • It must have been really painful when you were putting this video together, to be sorting through all those photos. :/
