@ZeroToNowhere Indeed. Though the timing was different in real life (being real lilfe and nto a movie), there were initial concerns that nuclear weapons would destroy the atmosphere. Now in real life this was rapidly proven utterly false well before the event. But that took a long time and was not a very exciting thing.

In the movie it was silly, but it was a silly movie so thats okay. The mental imagery of the "will that destroy us?" "Lets find out!" makes it hard not to use in comedy.
