  • The "old greys" were studio staff, security etc. Producers knew that if they heard the staff whistling tunes they had heard around the place then they had a hit on their hands. Hence Old Grey Whistle Test. Sounds unlikely, but I heard it from the original producer on a BBC radio show about the OGWT.

  • Man this is too good, im in heaven. Can you imagine how good this must have sounded live and in person

  • 3:00 - 3:09... Wow!

  • With hands like that.....his wife/girlfriend is a lucky woman. :-)

  • Handsom haircut.;)

    Superb performance!

  • This one of many things great that were done at the Old Grey Whistle - Emmylou, Skynyrd, who knows what all - available here on the Tube. Excuse my ignorance, is/was the Whistle a club or a recording studio, or just what?

  • @olmusiclover Was a TV show broadcast by BBC.

  • Mark needs to get Pick back on the drums, his brother David on rythm and John Islley for bass and do Sultans of Swing again.

  • Kurt Cobain was 'rated' a better guitarist than Knopfler... WHATEVER!!! I'd love to see Cobain do what Knopfler did from 3:00-3:04!

  • And an old guitar is all he can afford!

  • Why I never see anybody comparin Mark to Johnny Winter (on guitar)? Johnny's genre is a bit more limited, but his expertise is a close match.

  • A real guitar player! not Ffukkkcing Frank Gambale, Satriani, etc... those other guitar players is pure technique and nathing of feel or soul.

    clap clap mark!

  • OOOOOH man

This version has a welcome gruff hardness about it I LOVE IT!!!!!! =)=)

  • DogSwede This is Awesome! I have seen this before but the beginning was missing and that was annoying. I like this performance better than the album version and now I can take the audio from it as a complete track. Thank you!

  • I've ben a long time Benny Hill fan, and the guy at the beginning is the spitting image of a Benny caricature. Not being familiar with British personalities, who is/was this guy? Evidently he must have been popular at the time for Benny to imitate him. Oh, btw, Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits is my all tie favorite (except the Beatles), which is how I stumbled on to this!

  • @greenwich1754 Whispering Bob Harris is th guy you are talking about. He is a music broadcaster/journalist and he used to front the OGWT for a while.

  • 4:52 is that a mistake? O.o impossible!! mark knofler is a god

  • @bassi0902 ...i dont hear any "mistakes" at all

  • @bassi0902 He is an entertainer. A god is able to guide you. Mark just helps you to pass the time enjoyably.

  • Knopfler is built like a brick shithouse!! Look at those freaking guns! OWWWW!!!

  • Did they not need intruduction anymore, already in May '78? They must have hit like a bomb then...

Remarkable that a band (artist) which delivers a track of this level (magnitude really), doesn't end up a one-day fly. Such great work followed after this master piece. I'd probably have called it quits after wroting a Sultans of Swing, go look for other challenges :-)

Thanks to Mark for keeping at it, musical joy and life inspiration to millions.

    Thanks for sharing to DogSwede1!

  • absolute CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is one of the best songs ever written!

  • GESU' CRISTO

  • best version

  • haha MK looks like hes 18 in this vid but hes actually 28! kick ass

  • respect!

  • sorry missed typed grey for gray!!!

  • bring back the old gray whistle test it was a great progamme.

  • @mikeytheskinhead Mikey, you could try bringing back OGWT but where are the talented bands to perform on it ?

  • @lddav Never was a truer word spoken.

Unfortunately for all of us born in the late 80s, we managed to miss the end of the period of real music. Those born later have grown up listening to Teletubbies and S Club 7 so they don't know what they were missing, we grew up listening to music we only just missed out on :(

  • FODA-- que granda malha.

é ao vivo e bem melhor doque no estudio...

  • What a performance pure brilliance

  • Right to my favorites locker. Better than the studio recording, for my money. Again in awe of the solid drum work of Pick Withers - I hafta play "Skate Away" at least once a week .

  • love this song it's a classic

  • fuckin awesome - they got it down LIVE !!!!

  • Why people don't make stuff that great anymore?

  • The greatest stuff have already been done by Mark Knopfler, so nobody can make better music. That's the reason. So I guess everyone can put down their guitars and dreams about writing the best songs, because nobody will be able to do that. I think I go and throw away my guitar right now, yeah, I do it.

  • @DogSwede1

I really miss the old fashioned rock 'n' roll styles that bands used to play. Nowadays it's all... the same alternative drudge.

  • @DogSwede1 Uhaaaa!!!!! man, you are great! how can u get this videos man!? they are awesome! i only can say thanks, you make all fans of that histirical group really really happy, thanks a lot

  • I wish I had a time machine to go back!!

  • @Turtle1631991 Ask our Lo'ward for better, and, if you are his obedient servant, he'll make, for you, better.

  • This performance is great, I love that tone he got from that strat.

And that solo part from 3:01

    He's amazing...

  • Seeing this version of 30 odd years ago already, makes me wonder how many times Mark must have performed this song in all these years !

  • good job

  • ah fantastic job. Thanks for posting the full version this time. Great quality.

  • everything is better in HD!

    thanks dogswede1

  • wow! =)
