Golf III and Golf IV will seriously be the best Golf generations ever. Better than the current Mk VI which is a waste of money compared to the contemporary Ford Focus III, the best compact car of this generation as we speak.
@eltfell The Golf II was just a revision of the first, or at least I felt that. Even the CitiGolf from RSA felt better than the Golf II, and it was a revamped Golf I. Of course, it was a great car. The GTi and the RALLYE versions were just outstanding. But the marketing wasn't up to what the product was, specially in the US, the safety as you said wasn't the best out there, and the price was steep. But it was maybe the best you could get: the Escort was the close you'd get to a Golf

The I and II had less in common as the II and III: Totally different body structure, totally different suspension parts (same principle, though). The III originally was just a modernized II, but it had to be reinforced before it hit the market, because auto motor und sport began to crash test cars (also II, it was as good as a Nissan Maxima) 50 % offset and at a speed of 55 km/h.

Also, I said the Golf III and IV were the best for me because, in the case of the third, it became a rapidly popular sensation, and it had nice interior room, setting the standard for compact cars at the time. I crashed mine a few days ago into the back of a renault megane at 25mph. My car is 15 years old and the megane was 3 and put it this way the megane looked much worse for wear. Mine is perfect apart from the bonnet been mashed in. I was quite surprised how safe old golfs actually are .. and i only got whiplash.
@TheMightyWoosh Nothing to do with safety. It only means that the megane has more deformable zone, so you would die with higher speed and the megane driver would live.
i wrecked my golf mk3 two days ago. i hit the protection fence with 60-70km/h. not directly but in some engle then it turned me around and i hit the fence again with the rear end. i had no injuries, car is not so badly damaged... 2 weels dent, front and rear bumper smashed, front lights and one rear destroyed, front fenders dent and bonnet slightly out of shape...

Yes, I'm driving 93' 1,9 SDI Golf III xD You can say that's engine good for tractors but after 17 years it still uses 5l/100km which is way more important for me than acceleration. Hard to find another so cheap car with that good results.

yes . it still works. This car still amazes me. I bought it from Germany this year . Absolutely everything works on it. (even the rear window washer and wiper) The only things that I replaced was a bulb from the dash and one from the ashtray).

PD... The vin says it was build Dec 1998 so its not refurbrished, bought it new from a vw dealer back in 1999
about 128 lb·ft and with a straight pipe and no cat about 145hp ... which for a car that weights only a bit more than a ton gives a very good power to weight ratio

At some time during the life of the mark3, it became manditory for them to have airbags but not the older ones. Some mark2s have rear seat belts, some don't for the same reason
most people who have them think they wont crash them, saying that i had a 1997 honda accord, blowout caused me to spin into a barrier at 70mph, i walked out without a scratch :D

@BoglenTerrier its because they have the v-tec enginge with the cams that move allowin it to rev to 8484 rpm almos 8500 rpm and they are really good at handling my brother bought one their light and u can throw them around and they stick to the road really well without much modification but thers somthing about vdubs tht is jus awesome

if this video is at normal speed then this definitely isn't a 60km/h crash. Calculate the time it takes the car to cover its own distance and you will see.

You may think this is good but this is a front impact test - not an offset impact which is used to test cars today. All cars since 1974 have had to pass a test by crashing into a wall at 30mph.

I ran trough the wall with Golf 3 TDi doing 90km/h.
Enigne survived, and I didnt get hurt. I had no ABS nor AirBags, just a seatbelt.

my golf gti mk3 abs never worked, the light was always on, and as for airbag, well some did some didnt

At some time during the life of the mark3, it became manditory for them to have airbags but not the older ones. Some mark2s have rear seat belts, some don't for the same reason

vw diesel engines always survive
My oil pump was on its way out and I (stupidly) drove another 60 miles with the oil light on. Engine was fine even when i put the new pump in.

@BoglenTerrier they are very popular in racing, like need for speed underground, u can drive and "trick it out", and in the fast n the furious, dom and his gang uses honda civics to rob the trucks, yeah, honda is a cool car but, I prefer the Honda CRX

@BoglenTerrier its because they have the v-tec enginge with the cams that move allowin it to rev to 8484 rpm almos 8500 rpm and they are really good at handling my brother bought one their light and u can throw them around and they stick to the road really well without much modification but thers somthing about vdubs tht is jus awesome

if this video is at normal speed then this definitely isn't a 60km/h crash. Calculate the time it takes the car to cover its own distance and you will see.
so this 92 golf doesn't perform any better than the 92 civic(death trap as the author refers to it)

You may think this is good but this is a front impact test - not an offset impact which is used to test cars today. All cars since 1974 have had to pass a test by crashing into a wall at 30mph.

cool if you look the shock wave from the impact is traveling though the roof! the roof absorbed the impact pretty neat
