Next Version: Schmidt couplings on the drive wheels with suspension (start with passive and then maybe we can move into active suspension. I've been wanting to try some linear actuator design anyway), Signal lights, horn, rollbar, and a standardized "accessories" connector for "things" ;-). I'll give you the batteries, but I only have a 760Wh worth. Maybe we can get some more through Yet-Ming.
I found an article for this in Popular Science and I think it said somewhere around 30-35 mph tops or something like that. Pretty damn fast for a shopping cart, anyway.
my god that is the coolest thing i have ever seen!!! i have subscribed and will follow your videos for the next 40 years, how fast can that go? and how long will it run on a single charge?
Seriously, Please please tell me the red button shoots an oil slick or fires the nitro or ejects the driver.
But seriously, all joking aside, this actually makes a whole lot of sense. The shopping cart is the perfect vehicle. It is time-tested as the premier load-carrying platform for high foot-traffic, urban areas. It's perfectly suited indoors, up and down the grocery store isles, as well as to be taken outdoors throughout the parking lot/streets. this makes 10x more sense than the Segway.
hey how much would it cost for me a non mit student to get one of those with turning signals cuz i would love to have one it looks sooooo sweet and it can go the right speed for public streets
Unlike what the interblags have repeated, it's currently geared for 35mph, and I can get maybe 30 due to the condition of the batteries. The 45mph is a previous gearing that I ditched because it was that much more suicidal.
The total trip in this video was about 6 miles. I guess probably another 2 or 3 remained.
Cool! But is it lawful to drive home-made electric go-karts like that around American streets? Reminds me of Britain's Sinclair C5 about 25 years ago...
Is it possible to do anything in today's pampered society without offending someone or breaking a law? No. So just stop worrying about it and go do it.
He doesn't need a helmet. He's using his knees as crumple zones. They will absorb the impact energy and save his skull. :) Besides, everyone under 21 is immortal...unless they're not. :)

Why the heck do some people just walk by and act as if they can't see it? Is this some sort of magical kart which only some people can see?
caesiume 2 years ago 3
Yeah, there was a leaf on the front of the vehicle, so nobody could see me.
teamtestbot 2 years ago
Because this sort of random-ass shit is pretty common at MIT.
I never attended myself, but I love the campus. :D

What does the red button do? I'm dying to know :P
zibredlektab 2 years ago
Main power on/off.
teamtestbot 2 years ago
Aaahhhhh. That makes sense! So no key-locked ignition? What if you need to park it somewhere unattended? Or would a bike lock suffice? :P
zibredlektab 2 years ago
Battery disconnect (not the same thing as power on/off) is on a separate, keyed switch.

I wasn't worrying, just wondering! You should record some 0-30 mph (or maybe 0-40 mph!) times as you make mods...

This kart is subsidized by the MIT or by yourself?
Because I can't imagine that MIT susidize proyects like this! xD amazing, but my universitity does not allow it...I'm jelous! haha
gamba123 2 years ago
The project is primarily begged, scrounged, hacked, or custom built. Hardware and small parts were purchased. It was not funded or subsidized.
teamtestbot 2 years ago
I thought so...xD In this case it has even more value! congratulations! you must be pride of your kart isn't it?
Sorry for my "English" haha

It's cool that it works, but otherwise it's nothing radical or cutting-edge.
(that's waiting for the rebuild.)

benleyfnordomatic 2 years ago
Characteristic of many northern US streets. Very cold and wet winters means water tends to freeze in the road, which expands it and causes cracks.
teamtestbot 2 years ago
I Want. BADLY.
How long does it go on a single charge? I assume it's electric...
And also, is that seriously street legal? Nobody really seemed to notice! XD

All the running around in the video added up to be around 6 miles. I would guess I had another 2 or 3 left.
