  • Makes me smile :)

  • im from greensboro but im a guy

  • how many guitars do this guys got , they got me by like 6 or 7, lol, i have 3 mandolins , 6 guitars, stradvious, ducilmer

  • He really sings like TVZ here. Amazing cover, I wish they'd do a whole album covering TVZ songs... endless material from that amazing artist.

  • It's a Martin D-35 made sometime in the early 70's

  • wrangler baby

  • Your ALL wrong - it's a D-35. I own one.

  • Your ALL wrong - it's a D-35. I own one.

  • Townes would be impressed I think. Not many can pull off a great cover of his. But leave it to an Avett to get the job done!

  • @thewaiting08 Thanks buddy, that's awesomee.

  • does anyone know what kind of guitar that is? it sounds and looks rad.

  • Comment removed

  • @MikeyFace21 Most likely Martin D28 he plays those a lot

  • @TheFiveandDiamond - i think he is playing a D-45 here. black pickguard and those tuners are USUALLY on a D-45, BUT i could be wrong!

  • @brodank I thought the d-28 usually had the black pick guards.. bu i could be wrong also.

  • I really do feel that the Avett Brothers give a great voice to NC, we don't get talked about much despite being such a culture rich state. I live in Greensboro and grew up in Chapel Hill, and to hear a reference even as vague as this is great! Keep at it guys, and thanks!

  • makes me oh so proud to be from NC--i could be their #1 fan

  • i love this song, does anyone have the tabs? or can anyone show me where i can find them?

  • @songmanslim watch his hands its all right there.

  • crackerfarm where did the other version go!? where scott was riding on the bus.... so much better.. dude put it back up man

  • @jonnyjaxn Agreed. That version was awesome, as was the bus driver.

  • @jonnyjaxn I don't think it was Crackerfarm's video but yeah it was just perfect ... :/

  • which greensboro is he sing about ? greensboro, nc ?

  • @limelime20 yes, they're from NC

  • I love TVZ and this is amazing. I've become a huge fan of the Avett brothers and it is great to see them keep this music going.

  • Also add the greatest sum to the list 1.5

  • Best song by avetts

    5. murder in the city

    4. paranoia in b flat major

    3. talk on indolence

    2. if its the beaches

    1. the song you are listening to right now :-)

    Word!

  • I like the way you think!

  • Hmmm

  • I have a feeling that he does not sit down to "play better" than anyone. Just appreciate the music. Avetts rock

  • For the love of god, what can i do to get The Avett Brothers to come to the rythm and roots festival in BRISTOL VA/TN!!!! PLLLEEEEEAAAASEEEE COME!

  • i think they have played there b4...

  • we tried to get them in this past year but they're too damn popular and amazing and the festival cant afford it. WHICH SUCKS!

  • YES ! Come back to Bristol =D

  • scott avetts wife is a lucky lucky woman

  • @kaitlink9200 that doesnt even come close to covering it!!! man o man..whew!

  • @kaitlink9200 creepy.

  • @somesomething 60 people seem to be just as creepy

  • This is awesome! I am a huge Townes fan! I don't give a shit if you think Townes sang it better or if this kid sings it better . . . Townes would have been as happy as a puppy with two peters to hear this cat singin' his song with this much heart . . . period. This is excellent!

  • It's not possible to perform a song better than the person who created it.

Music is all based on opinion, but it's a fact that covers cannot be better than originals. The original is how it's meant to be played and really represents the artist.

This is a great cover and it's ok to prefer over the original, but you have to remember, without the original, there is no cover.

  • brianwildemusic You have no clue of what you are saying so please go away and stop posting comments

  • I have thought long and hard about this, and while it is close, Townes sings it better. There's a weird inflection in Scott's voice in a couple of parts. Plus, Townes wrote the mofo of a song. 'nuff said.

  • Theres a video of Scott playing this on the tour bus.. Its REALLY awesome.

  • I agree he sings it better than townes, I enjoy them both. Its kinda like Bob Dylan, he writes this brilliant songs but doesn't have the voice to match his soul. Too the guy who wanted to know how to play it.. It walks into G in the 6th string and is in a G/C chord form with D

  • I can appreciate your sentiment, but no way in all get out does he sing this better than Townes. That's a pretty tall task.

  • @Milkm4n2005 Bob dylan is the only one with the voice to match it hate when people cant see that.

  • I knew when we sold the first cd's on the counter at lilbucks, you guys were gonna be huge! im so happy to say i knew you before & your still as humble and sweet as ever..

  • Okay, it's good, and Scott rules the world. But honestly, it's not half as good as Townes.

  • amen

  • Sorry but this is twice as good as townes

  • i live in concord where these dudes are from

its freakin sweet and i didnt hear of them til today

  • Does anyone know the deal with all their "pretty girl" songs? There's like seven or so...

    "Pretty girl from the Airport"

    "Pretty girl from Chile"

I can't remember the other ones from off the top of my head, but there's more. If anyone knows, please comment me or something!

  • Pretty Girl From Annapolis

    Pretty Girl From Raleigh

    Pretty Girl From Feltre

    Letter To A Pretty Girl

    Pretty Girl From Cedar Lane

  • And

    Pretty girl from Matthews

  • @hyperRocketgrl11 I just figured it was an easy title. When writing a song, it's typically about a relationship... So my guess is it's just a "go to" title for a song written about a girl that was written in, or had it's genesis at, that location (Matthews, Airport, etc). That's my guess, anyways. Some, of course, may be about a real girl from a town, but others are just imagined.

  • Better than Townes!!! Bravo

  • anybody have any tips on playing this? Patterns? i can kinda tell but dont sound quite the same.

  • Neat to see the Avetts are into Townes...and Shannon Hoon, another amazing songwriter that is finally getting his due through these younger bands discovering them...Bravo Avett Brothers!

  • i like this song.I live in the NC one.

  • Pretty Girl From Greensboro

  • hahaha

  • nice hahaha

  • How have I not seen this til now?? beautiful!

  • fucking townes.

  • fucking townes indeed

  • sbnewman, have you seen Rex Griffin at the tate street coffee house. he plays there

  • snowranf - not that I know of. but, then again, it's hard to remember everyone's names.

  • I adore the Avett Brothers :)

    I live in Greensboro ;)

  • *applauds*

    These guys know good music...:)

  • They do alot of covers, but they really do um well.

Its like when Cash done covers everyone would think they are his own cos he done um so well...same with the Avett brothers.

  • Amazing , It sucks I couldn't see them in Greenville.

  • i live in greensboro

  • Great cover of a great tune.

  • love that he's travlin on the road while singing ... very townes-ish

  • awesome, i hope to see them live soon

  • This is one of my favorite songs ever. This is such a great version of it. It makes me smile. : )

  • he's so dreamy

  • classic american voice... none better

  • this is a beautiful song , skillfully performed, nice ;o)

  • Really enjoyed it, I play it in D with a capo on the second fret and using C progression. One of my favorites of Townes.

  • and this isn't a 'cover band' dude its scott avett of the avett brothers :)

  • Amazing!! Most of these cover vids on youtube suck hard! But this one is really good! Love your style man, your voice, your pickin' and the beard! :)

  • you should see them live.

  • amen

  • That's quite a nice rendition of the song. The bastards removed a video with Van Zandt singing this song recently. I hope someone brings it back.

  • AMEN

  • If I'm not mistaken this is the song Townes wrote about Emmy Lou Harris. Emmy Lou used to open up her guitar case and play down on Tate Street.

  • seriously? that's a great story! I've spent a lot of time on Tate Street between working for 3 years and parking there for classes. it seems like everyone is out there now with a poem, song, tune... its hard to filter the shit from the gems, but where else do you have that opportunity?

  • I saw them do it in Greensboro too... and thought it was about me.

  • Haha.

  • Awesome cover of this Townes Van Zant tune. Having just seen them do it live in Greensboro, I'm hoping it makes it's way into the lineup more often. Another one for the DVD. Thanks Scott...and thanks Lindsey.
