Hi, I watched you clip over 100 times, it`s so gread sound and play! Anyway, can you pls tell me where can I find that backing track? I would appreciate your help very much!!! Thanks :)
Love your playing... it is some of the best on the tube. I love to play along with you, as I pratice. What is a good clip on mic for a tenor? Thanks CDD and keep em coming.
Slow and sultry are some of my favourite things. I could listen to this all day! With the mic's, is there much difference between the 2? Over here the SM57 (on sale) us 1/3 the price of the NT2a
Hi YaniT991, the sm57 is quite bright and thin sounding compared to the rode. It depends what you want it for.... for playing out then the 57 is a great choice (although I now use a tom mic, an akg D22, better for tenor) for recording at home (assuming you have phantom power) then get a condensor like the NT1a.... you don't need to go for the 2a, I rarely switch patterns now. Good luck
The bottom one is a Rode NT2a and the top is a Shure SM57, just to experiment. I did a video called "how to get good audio and video for youtube" if you look through my vids you will find it, that should help you.
Wow! Yes, I too am inspired to practice more. Wish I could get that good a response in the low register. I tried a JJ on alto but like the VanDorens better. The VanDorens on tenor are pretty good too. Anyway, keep it coming man !
This is an awesome performance. I dream that someday I wil play like that. So here is the deal. When I see videos like this I am inspired to work harder. And when I see encourageing comments like some on here it makes me listen better. Thanks to all
Matt...I think I may have been one of your very first listeners right after you signed up here. I remember your first saxophone upload, and all I can say is..."You've Come A Long Way, Baby". You're getting a nice professional sound these days. In the beginning I thought this might be a hobby you were just toying around with, but you've pleasantly surprised me with the amount of dedication and steady effort you've put into it from day one. It's clearly paying off.
Thanks CJ, you have been a great help. It has been lots of work, not always in the right direction. I think I am about 50% there if that, but I am enjoying it no end.
Great sound especially in the low register... I am searching for a new mouthpiece too,my old Jumbo Java T-95 still satisfys me but after hearing you blow on the Jody I think I'll check it out
love this tune and your sound. i wish i could play like that. thank you big time for this vid, it reminds me why i started to play. kind regards, alex
Sounds better than most well known musicians. Its two beauties at the same time - beautiful composition, beautifully played. Go on crazydaisydoo, keep the world so happy. A warm hug to you.
Thanks stradman, funny about that little blip at 0.38, it is partly the new mouthpiece and the leap up to top E can be tough. There is quite a nice little warble to this piece up high, because my chops are not used to it and I was using a softer reed, difficult to keep stable. It has a keening quality though which suits this tune. Thanks for the comments as usual, much appreciated.
I had my shure 57 lying around, so I thought why not. My recordings still do not sound how I hear my sax in the room, it misses some brightness. With the shure pointing towards the top of the horn the whole sax is recorded. The sound on a saxophone comes out of the keys, not the bell!
Hi Matthew! We seem to love the same songs. This is another one of your great "late night jazz club" titles. You must make a CD "jazz for melancholic lovers :-) ...
Thanks Ulli, the new mouthpiece is OK but the rails are wider than my reeds so it hurts a bit. It has a bit more brightness and a more expressive bottom end, but the top end is thinner. You can't have it all!!
Thanks! setting up 20 minutes, recording the tune 20 minutes (3 or 4 takes) editing the video 20 minutes, posting on youtube 10 minutes. Just over an hour start to finish. It depends on how many instruments, if I do one with 2 saxes and guitar, that can take 2-3 hours! Oh, and don't forget the practicing, could be 5 hours on a tune minimum
Are you telling us that not only you play the saxophone tenor, also the guitar and all the instruments that we hear in the video or is it only a playback?
Matt, really youre awesome thank you for share with us this music that high our souls.
haha! No not this one, I never play the piano bass or drums, but o some of my stuff I play the alto or sop as well and then a guitar solo. That's what takes the time

This is a part of music I'd love to get more familiar with, but don't know where to start out exactly.

Another favorite tune beautifully interpreted. Especially enjoyed the emotional outbursts @0:38 & 2:52, among many others!
This is a melody into which you can really sink your chops - and you CERTAINLY did that here!
Fantastic interpretation - thanks, Matthew!
