Not to beat a dead horse, but there's a student-made video for Wilco's "Hell is Chrome" that shows a less-literal, more creative way that these kids could have used to approach this video. Great song, though.
sorry guys, this is pretty lame, but um who am i to judge.....well i guess i have eyes so i am a pretty good judge, that was rude, keep on keeping on.
@magoichi1415 -- Non-linear just means that the editing is done digitally and not necessarily frame by frame in order on a tape like used to be done in video production.
Music videos should be abstract, and not literal interpretations of the art that is the music. This literal interpretation of the song is very lacking of any creativity and does not showcase your film skills at all. Fail.
the video is definitely too literal but cmon they were just trying to make something but they didn't do that well, theres no need to get so harsh with these comments ppl should stop completely demolishing them with these comments but all in all the song is amazing but the video could use a lot of work
I was wondering why this masterpiece has so few hits, but after viewing this train wreck, I know why. If it was I was told up front this was a high school production my expectations might have matched the simplistic interpretation.
the video is terrible, but goddamn you all seem to be acting like you are too good and pretentious for a video to go along with a song. It doesn't take away from the song, if you hate the video so much don't watch it and just listen to the song. The dude did it because he wanted to, it sucks I agree but there is no reason to give him shit about it.
I hope everyone knows that Damien Jurado just released an album on the St. Ives record label with his brother Drake. It's available on vinyl -- only 500 copies-- with album covers that are handmade by the brothers themselves. Their band name is Hoquiam . Also available on iTunes. 17 of the most haunting songs you'll ever hear, guaranteed. Lovin mine.
Such an amazing song that I think clearly went right over the head of Louis De Caprio and Max Touhey. That being said, it's just a class project. Still, considering how much I love the song, the video is just painful to watch.
This is a great song, by one of the greatest folk singer/songwriters out there today. For those of you who complain about the video, what do you expect? It is a literal song, what sort of video would you expect? Other than to actually dramatize the lonely mother and the child's kidnapping. It's about the music. everybody knows that "video killed the radio star."
nice video, i've listened to this song on repeat for years and i lived in Fenway with that view. I hope you got a good grade. Damn, people who post comments are rough. Be calm, fuckers.
I'm sure you guys flunk that summer course, and if you didn't, God help us, for the story tellers and film makers of our generation will suck so much ass...
Why so negative? I loved it. Nothing wrong with literal interpretation not everything has to be concealed under layings of "meaning". Sometimes what is, just is. Thank you. Beautiful song, great video.
If I wasn't so in love with this song, I'd hold my tongue. But I must say that this video is really really painful. It feels terribly contrived. To the students that worked on this project -- keep up the hard work but please don't sodomize such soulful music! For everyone who'd like to keep listening to this song on YouTube, I just bought the song and uploaded it w/ a simple album cover.
uhhhh, why so literal? i mean this just ruins any sort of image or imagination that may play off of the words of this great song... seriously, why did you bother? this is boring.
Good work. To reinforce what others have said about interpretation, my favorite part was at the end with the meeting of the shoes and flip-flops.
This is, not coincidentally, the only time you put the literal message of the lyrics aside and conveyed your own interpretation. The song doesn't have a happy ending, but your video does! So clearly if you can take artistic license there, you could also apply it elsewhere. Keep up the good work.
I must disagree to a point. It is an unhappy song, the girl missing her mother for so long and starting an uncertain journey to find her again, But, when you refer to the last clip, the "meeting of the shoes and flipflops," it looks to me that as he was finishing the writing of the song, she had returned to him.
huh. the above comments were my thoughts exactly. i like this video though-- a nice piece for a beautiful song.
but the shots of the fountain, for e.g., or the girl saying the lines word for word, etc-- too literal. rather than reproducing the song, interpret it.
not bad guys, one suggestion is to not be so literal in your representations of the lyrics, get creative with the visual elements, bring the viewer pictures they feel bring the something more than what the song already does. Just trying to help a lil for the future, but really its a very good effort, get even better towards the end!

Simplicity is pure and that is a great way to see things.
