Private schools have examminers as teachers, they teach their kids answers to extremley similar questions on the exam, hence why they do so well. Hence also why when they go to uni, they do worse because the spoon for their feeding is no longer available.

These universities don't even recognise HNDs. They take in from A-level grades. I'm not saying HNDs are superior to A-levels but they should at least be of equal standing. Some much lower level universities take HND students onto the final year or sometimes even straight onto a Master's course. Something doesn't add up.

As a Cambridge student I also get the feeling that Cambridge does not value non-English qualifications or even foreign english qualifications, even if the applicant can demand a suitable command of English. From my experience almost all of the Undergraduate foreign students have done British qualifications

@RanpatMcMurphy lol, have you seen HND syllabuses? They are terrible- the qualification is much too vocational to be of use for entry into higher education. On the other hand, A-levels are ideal because they are much more abstract and academic, although they could be made harder to better differentiate between the brightest candidates.

Cambridge does have a huge amount of material open to the public. My point was there was no obligation for this to be the case and criticism of the university for not meeting someone's personal interests was not valid. The university is a private organisation and has no mandate for public education. Its only educational obligation is to the students who pay the fees and qualify for admission. That is a fact. And for that you brand me as an elitist prick.

cam is not a private organsation, but rather a public university. this said, i do not believe that even a public institution of higher learning is public in a sense that anyone may participate at will. participation in public areas where particapatory possibilites are limited can, of course, be guided by a legitimate admissions process. cheers.

The difference between the US and UK "ownership" of a university is inconsistent with terms like private and public. Indeed, Cambridge is not private as in the sense of an independent corporation. But it is private in the sense that the government does not hold a governance role in the university management as is the case with public universities in the US.

i am not familiar with the US university/college system. self-management does not exclude the public nature of an entity. german universities are self-governing stand-alone legal entities ("Koerperschaften"), but are still public.

So why do we even care to distinguish between public / private? because public, i.e. state entities are bound to certain rules that private entities are not, e.g. they are subject to more restrictions, more regulation. in practice we can see the difference fading away though, as state universities are granted more and more freedoms and private entities are becoming more regulated (e.g. anti-discriminatory laws). any way: i think we agree on substance and results. lets not mind semantics

Cambridge is not an academic free-range for anyone and everyone, qualified or not, to expect participation. Academia is a collection of scholarly people, not just the curious. Evidently, by your lights, anyone should be able to join in an Olympic training without bothering to qualify, just because they are curious. I never said that only the elite get to have access to ideas. That is silly. I said Cambridge has educational obligations only to its students who qualify. All else is generosity.

I suppose the introduction line of "elitist prick" and "In terms of intellectual productivity, we are second to none" did get a bit transpherincteral for me. Britain's "sorid" history seems to be going on with the Commonwealth of Nations and regard for our institutions and HM The Queen. You cannot contrast the US and its size and economy with the UK in an unadjusted way to claim American superiority. You are not superior.

There is no question the USA has been a technology powerhouse, but mostly due to business practices and internal market size and not intellectual superiority.

There's no denying that Cambridge is indeed one of the world's top universities. And it's also a fact that despite being highly qualified, many less fortunate individuals are unable to afford a Cambridge education. Now why not make your material freely available on the net for those people? It would show that Cambridge also cares about spreading knowledge, not only making money. Like MIT did many years ago. Virtually all of MIT's lectures can be accessed by anyone, for free.

My dear i am afraid it's not a matter of intelligence. Either Oxford or Cambridge offer high research quality as well as plenty of services and other facilities which help the students. Believe me that only the students who are really good can be admitted irrespective of their nationality etc. Without a doubt the universities of Oxford and Cambridge are the best in the world. It's a well known fact that the majority of the world's leading personalities have graduated from these universities

One thing I can comment on is that what this man is saying is not true. Cambridge and Oxford are known for lowering standards for admission for graduate work. They are particularly known for letting in foreign students with lower standards. That's all I will say.

I can't speak to LSE, but Cambridge is not....is not the most welcoming environment. Regardless of students or professors, it is a very cold place. Not everyone, but enough of the population. Then, you need to consider the relationship between the locals and the students. That was horrible.
