I meant this is my favorite band. I saw them live as a teenager in 1976, with a great lazer light show. Buck Dharma OD'd right before the concert and it was held up for two hours, but they revived him at one of the local hospitals and he showed up and they got on stage performed, I was wasted and I was so high I thought the band was singing directly to me and for me. I was imagining that everything I did they would do to mimic me, reinforcing the idea they were there for me. I'd OD'd,before.
This I my favorite band and has been since I was a teenager, this song reminds me of those days. I picture me and my buddies in this situation. Been there done that, half of them are gone now. I was never afraid.
you cant trust anyone. this could happen to anyone of us at any time. keep an eye on everyone as they could surely be ready to move. even a comotose person age 96 can make the move on your money.
it wasn't in PA was it? I saw them a few months ago too, at this place called Mt Airy Casino in Mt Pocono, PA. Eric Bloom said it's a true story before they played it.

WOW, after seeing all the posts I must share...I too told a good buddy and my g/f at that time, sometime back in the 70's I wanted this played at my funeral, I lost track of both of them over the years and just recently heard that they both had passed away, her in 2007 and him in 2010, man what a trip, gotta tell someone else that will out live me I guess....TO RichardScott1958, Sorry about your friend Dale, May He Rest In Peace...BOC FOREVER...
@LittlePikachu@unholyftw Why are you being sarcastic? I wish I had such a wide range of music that I could listen to. She was just talking about her feelings. Methinks tha's a bit of a prick, to be honest.
This song is beautiful. So spooky and gloomy, yet... beautiful. My generation doesn't know music. I don't bother showing this song to people, my peers, because I know they wouldn't get it, couldn't understand...
On a big discussion page a nice guy has said that this, Blue Öyster Cult's Then Came the Last Days of May, and Deep Purple's Child In Time is his two favorites among all the 70's ballads. I think there is plenty great one's but can't really argue against him. This song is truly a masterpiece.
This is BOC blues, what a fuckin' masterpiece, I am only 20 years old, and been listening to these guys since I was 15, a friend of mine had me listen to "Dance on Stilts" and "Cities on Flame with Rock & Roll", after that, I was hooked, and my god what a good addiction this is, since then, I have bought every LP BOC has ever released, a whole CD rack of BOC albums, and damnit, I'll fight to the death to protect that collection
@Nightwing690 Congrats oh young one. I'm 42 and have loved these guys a long time. People like you still give me hope for the younger generation. Today's music is absolutely pathetic. Fortunately BOC will be around forever.
Wow! Everything about this song has always impressed me, but I hadn't noticed the drumming until now. It is a huge part of why the song has the trance-like mood that it does.
The best song they did, just about, and didnt get the credit it deserves.. GREAT SONG!! And they did it live one of the times I saw them, about fell out when they did.. How can you not LOVE this song???
@wilhoitsux - please point out some other songs that have this chilled vibe to them? I couldn't on spotify... Its like Black Sabbath with that tune 'Planet Caravan', so unlike them and you wish you could find more tunes like it. Dotard.
I've seen the cult for decades and this song played well with the life I had lead back in the day...it has a special place in my heart...ahhh memories.
We buried one of my best friends yesterday and at the end of the funeral Mass, before taking him to the cemetary, this is the song that was played. He was my dear friend since 1978 and his whole life he told me he wanted "Then Came The Last Days of May" to be played at his funeral. Rest in peace Dale, I love you, brother...
@RichardScott1958 Sorry about your friend. That must have been pretty emotional hearing this song at his funeral. Remember that you always have memories to go back to. Music is a great source for bringing those memories close. Take care.
@RichardScott1958 So sorry about your friend but his memories live on for you to cherish always. Remember those when you here this. He's smiling down at you listening right along with you.

I had the privilege of hearing the story behind this song from a guy who knew the folks involved...yeah it's a true story. Funny, I knew that before I met him.
A nice flashback to the days when the Cult seemed to be on just about every tour I saw . . .
For later material, BOC's generally overlooked Imaginos album had some very cool tracks, including The Siege and Investiture of Baron von Frankenstein, with guest solos by Joe Satriani.
they used to have the best lazer show ever ...and now i saw them..all the fans are old and worn out in fkin wheelchairs with o2 bottles hanging off the side i will never go to another concert again let theband die along with all o fus our time is over..it is our last days of may!
@venusfly9108- Who cares if they were creators of heavy metal or not? The term heavy metal was used much later by the media and some British bands that brought a certain metallic sound in their songs which was a product of the environment where they grew up (for instance a place like Birmingham). I am sure that if you ask any of these bands whether they were creators of heavy metal, they would all deny it.
BOC have always been a good band and that's what matters at the end of the day.
@ajittffcure I was just kinda curious since I've read that they formed before Sabbath or Zeppelin, sorry that had to disrupt your listening journey. I've just read that there was a band that was labeled heavy metal that released an album the year Black Sabbath formed.
@venusfly9108- I know what you mean. It is always a debatable subject on who were the pioneers of heavy metal. First of all, what do you mean by heavy metal? A lot of people will have their own versions of what they think heavy metal is.
According to me, Led Zeppelin is not a metal band. BOC is too eclectic to be exclusively called a metal band. But I think Black Sabbath can arguably be called a pioneering metal band because their records right from the start had those dark industrial sounds.
@ajittffcure You know what, I'll just stick with Black Sabbath being the pioneers and we'll leave it that, then. It would probably be better if I don't think about it so much that I would think about it over night. Like you said, by the end of the day, it's good music.
By the way, I am not a fan of either Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin. In fact I have a strong dislike for Led Zeppelin. But I find BOC's music more interesting and they have better musical sensibilities. I am not a hardcore fan of BOC but they are an interesting band, overall. I can't deny that.
@ajittffcure Neither am I a hardcore fan of BOC, I'm more of fan of Zeppelin since I have two of their albums, but I started liking BOC when I came across their song Cagey Cretins about two months ago. that song is one of my most favorite right now, since I haven't heard the whole song "Don't Fear the Reaper" yet, weird huh? Since only everybody has heard it. I've only heard probably seven songs from BOC, but from listening to their early stuff, they sound like an interesting group.
@venusfly9108- I am sorry. I just gave my opinion about all those bands. You can be the best judge depending on what you like.
The first BOC song I listened to was 'Don't Fear the Reaper'. I think they are best known for that song although they had several great songs like this song- 'Last Days of May' for instance.
@ajittffcure To be honest, I've never liked classic rock a lot. But when my guitar teacher introduced me to some other musicians that were more talented than they were, mostly blues, new age guitar, and jazz, I've actually had a greater interest in music and decided to listen to cds that one of my parents have had in their collection. Most of them have grown on me after probably 10 listens. Sometimes you have to listen to it several times before dismissing it to understand it.
@venusfly9108- Absolutely right. Well to be honest, I am not a metal-head at all. I remember at one point I used to hate heavy metal, grunge and especially rap music. But my horizons have broadened over the years. Now, I listen to everything without judging anything directly. In fact, one of my favourite songs is a rap record! But that is the power of music. Sometimes, it just cuts all barriers.
I still have my likes and dislikes but that depends on my sensibilities and me as a person.
@ajittffcure As i have expanded my horizons, I started losing interest in some preppy bands like Paramore and My Chemical Romance. Those bands sounded like crap once I started getting into New age guitarists and these guys, there just wasn't anything that stood out from music anymore. I wonder how many people are going this far back to the roots of music.
Blue Oyster Cult are like the realist, philosophical, psychedelic Sabbath. Whereas Black Sab would talk about witches, demons, and wizards, B.O.C. would dabble in occult dealings, crime, hauntings, technology, alchemy, and other high minded aspects of the 'dark' side of life
Oh yeah, a good drug deal gone bad, now who the heck has not experinced that I ask U? Man Buck Dharma is awesome on this song on lead vocal, and Eric Bloom, well he is KILLAH on his tunes, but this tune is all Bucks! Thanks for digging out yet another brilliant song by BOC, that rarely if ever got/gets airplay! INCREDIBLE TUNE! :o) *kisses*

I wonder how many people are going this far back to the roots of music.

this song is amazing! i've met them and there really nice but eric is always grouchy! he doesn't give guitar picks so don't even try! lol

:o) *kisses*

is that the live version?
if so i agree, but this also has its own quality
yangtai1992 1 year ago
@davidennis1 lol you cannot even start to compare studio BÖC to live BÖC, because live Blue Oyster Cult is the best band live in my opinion.
