I heard a zoologist in a documentary saying that you shouldn't smile to an ape or a monkey cause that means "showing off" in their body language and thus they get aggressive. I find it bizzare how narrow-minded humans are that they apply human behaviour to every possible animal. They see a slow loris tickling video and think it's cute with its arms raised, while the loris is actually preparing to bite you by sucking poison out of their glands in elbows. Ah well, some have to learn the hard way.
@StandingRedPanda Besides that, looking a gorilla straight in the eyes for a long time is inviting him to fight you, since you're questioning his dominance by behaviour (also applies to quite some (cub-)cultures in human society).
I've seen this animal myself (at least his back, since he was sitting against the glass ignoring the apes at the other side) and he is massive.

I was at a zoo once and there was this big, male Mandrill in a cage behind a glass/perspex screen. I looked at it and must've looked it right in the eyes 'cause it went ballistic and raced up to the screen, shrieking, and baring its teeth at me. I pretty much shat myself.
I was about five-ish at the time, though, so I didn't know.
