I too own a Miata, but this looks wrong to me too.. On the track I would expect a stock Elise to beat a stock MX-5, all else being equal. Driver issues? Malfunction?
I own a Miata but adore the Elise, that said in all fairness that looks to be an older Elise (fellow Americans - remember the EDM Elise doesn't necessarily have the "big block" 1.8L) versus a brand new Miata. On a drier day and on a tighter course, I'd say it would've been advantage Lotus.
Having driven both car (which are both good) you cannot compare them. The Elise is a far better car and with equal drivers the Elise would be significantly quicker all over the track. Oversteer problem - what is that guy on about...have you driven one? I imagine not. Where on earth do you get that idea. It has a balance of over and understeer depending on how you drive it. If your driving is good then it is finely balanced.
Even the base model elise would lap considerably faster than an mx5, all else equal. This is all down to the driver, or perhaps tyre conditions, or the fact that the elise is either warming up or down. MX5 fantastic car, but on track an elise is in another league entirely.
Utter drivel to suggest Elises have a serious oversteer problem. As said above, I think the Mazda driver was better. The MX5 is a brilliat car and probably a lot less intimidating than the Elise in those conditions.
And the NC miata sucks compared to the rest. If it was an NA or NB miata, they would chewed it up and spit it out. NCs are about 600lb heavier than the previous model miatas.
Maybe i'm thinking wrong but i though the NBs were 2150. I know my NA was about 2100 with a full tank of gas and all the extras (power steering, ac, windows, locks.. etc) I had it measured when i first bought it. The basic NCs were above 2500.
@iKenndac NA curb weight is 2100lbs so yeah he's pretty close with the 300lbs. You can drop quite a bit of weight with "legal" weight reduction. Im not talking taking the A/c out etc. But remove the tow hooks, carpeting etc and you can get the weight below 2000lbs easily. A full tank of gas will add 100+lbs.
@Triple88a ya NC is only 30ish pounds heavier, so that means the weight in drivers would matter more then the car. besides they say the NC is about 1 sec faster in lap times overall on just about everything than the NB. i have a NB so, just saying the facts about NC. they do say though, that the best one at touge is the NB =D the driving feel is much better and the torsen diff locks up farther into the turn for easier exits
why not? You do realize elises have SERIOUS oversteer problems right? I guess your adventures playing forza gives you the right to say these things though :D
it looked like the elise let him pass on the straight. i have an 06 miata, and have raced a couple elises... they are a bit faster on the straights and thats where the miata passes him at about 0:50
well thats why japan car's are superior they don't alway's win there just better and more durable!!

i have an mx5 na
but its obvious that elise driver was masturbating or somthing.
he caused a traffic jam with an integra and (it looks like) a gti-r.
everybody knows an elise is quicker than all of those around bends as its so light

3rd Generation miata weighs a very slight bit more but also has a considerably more powerful engine.

A fast car isnt going to go fast with a slow driver. Besides, the playing field is some what evened by rain.

You're kidding, right?
2005 MX-5 NB curb weight 2447 lbs
2006 MX-5 NC curb weight 2474 lbs
... 27lbs. Even if you find the lightest NB they made and the heaviest NC they make, the difference is still less than 300lbs.

Base model masses according to Parkers:
NA 980 kgs (2161 lbs)
NB 1026 kgs (2262 lbs)
NC 1106 kgs (2438 lbs)
I agree the NC is the worst of bunch but then again it is a hacked up RX8 (cheaters) and I own a NA :D

277 pounds is a lot. Especially when the car is lightweight in the first place.

whatever way you spin it an elise at twice the price isn't the smart buy.

Yeah, so the result is: Mazda has better drivers :P

I would be a bit nervous about my nice shiny Elise in the wet (if I had one).
johnnytenjobs 5 years ago
This just proves that the Miata driver was a hell of a lot better, aint no way the MX-5 is going to be able to walk away that much from the elise.

No it doesn't! It's just more likely to catch you out if you don't know what you're doing.
