I didn't discover Paquito until recently, as far as jazz musicians that I patronize listening to, but I do find that my improvisations are very similar to his, both in clarinet and alto sax. It may have something to do with him being very, very classically trained, yet still having tremendous energy and feeling when playing. He's also a really nice guy, unlike some other jazz clarinetists around these days...
His concert was definitely the highlight of ICA this year.
Be specific--who are you referring to as "unlike?" Have you heard any of Paquito's arrangements?? He started off doing bebop stuff in the late 1940's. His arrangements were wonderful!!
Oh, no, Paquito's a master of all forms of serious music! He's really quite astounding!
What I was referring to was that he, unlike other jazz clarinetists prominent on the world stage today, is a very kind and humble human being. Some of the other "greats" around today are self-absorbed egotists.

Indeed, Paquito was the highlight of ICA 2008 in Kansas City!!! Amazing, charismatic, and energetic!!!
