This song was slightly ahead of it's time. I always thought "So Serious" was a predecessor to the sound Jeff Lynne would find success with in late 80s with the Traveling Wilburys & their members' solo albums.
So the big fiddles were seen, but not heard. By this time, there were only three remaining members of ELO. I can't say I care much for their 80s sound, but this was OK.
According to Bev Bevan, the band did their part of the video in Scotland. The other scenes were all done in the U.S. and in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area. The opening scene was done at a RR crossing on Old Griffin Road, just south of FTL International Airport. The swimming scene was done in Ft. Laud. at the Swimming Hall of Fame and the man and ghost woman scene was done on Miami"s Metro Rail.
@ELOSHAZZY actually yeah you're right, it kinda does sound a bit like Ocasek might have been at the helm. Although it might just be the chord progression. This is the cliche'd "four chord song" otherwise known as the "sensitive female chord progression". That is, I - V - vii - IV. It's been done over and over. However, I LOVE this song. It actually has a bit of a Euro feel to it, it is not a very "American" or "British" sounding song. Although, you can still tell it's Jeff Lynne by drums/guitar.
Don't read this cause it actually works. U will be kissed in the nearest possible Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. It was quite a shock to hear the way Jeff was talking about the last albums of the original ELO (if you missed it - he said the ELO was his project and he was responsible for everything and he got enough of it, but he had a contract that bound him for three more albums, "so I did it. ) For heaven's sake, we're talking about Secret Messages, Time and Balance of power!
Such a disappointment to learn they were not those full-hearted projects you always thought to be, huh?
Ya still can't argue the fact that even when forced, their accomplishments were second to none! You could prolly give Jeff Lynne a shovel, a garbage can and a ball of cotton and he would be able to compose a musical masterpiece out of it!
@technocrash09 Couldn't agree more. That's exactly why it was so shocking: those 3 albums did not sound the least like anything "soulless" as Jeff called them. For me, Secret Messages is the #1 ELO-album of all times, followed by Time and Discovery.
Seems like Jeff Lynne simply couldn't make a mistake - probably even if he actually wished to :)
ELO is one of those things that make me regret time is passing by... :) Wish they would have remained young(er) and together...
@bioLarzen I guess his point was probably something like "...well, people may still enjoy my music but I, myself, do not hear my own soul here." due to the circumstances. The thing I think strikes me most about him (Gilmour of Floyd the same) is his humbleness. Both of these artists have earned the right to be as arrogant as they could wish to be, yet remain classy and down-to-earth. They seem to respect their fan base more than alot of their fans do them in return.
@bioLarzen I agree.....absolutely! I am glad I grew up in the 60's all the way to today. I know I lived in the musical history ers that my great grand kids will study in college. Hell, my grand-daughter is doing a book report on John Lennon right now for 7th grade!!
I remember in 1986 getting a stereo that had a cd player with it (yes, that was once a big thing) and this was the first cd I put in! Damn, E.L.O sure knew how to write music and perform! Jeff Lynne is a GENIUS! E.L.O HALL OF FAME NOW!!!
Is that George Harrison on the Keyboard? Really looks like him. I know that have worked together on George's solo albums and in the Travelling Willbury's .
@johnhamilton08 Amen brother! Those aging, bitter, baby booming hippies would never do that, makes too much sense!? RUSH should be in their as well? Screw the R&RHOF, the REAL fans know who the best of the best is and ELO is definitely one of them!
@johnhamilton08 Amen brother, RUSH should be there as well!? Screw those aging, bitter, baby booming hippies! The real fans know who the best of the best are and ELO is definitely one of them!
Probably the best song on Balance of Power. Calling America was ok, but seemed too mechanical. The video footage without the band was shot down here in So. Fla. That train crossing is across the street from one of my favorite bars---Dockers, just south of FTL intl. airport. The swimming was done at the Hall of Fame pool on Ft, Laud. beach, and the other part with the girl and guy was filmed on the Metro Mover in Miami.
I think one of them is Louis Clark, who used to arrange the strings. The other one I'm not sure of his name, but I think he played guitar on stage with ELO during their '86 gigs
@boinkboink1968 actually, Jeff Lynne did a few songs for the soundtrack of electric dreams, though as you probably know, not the main theme. But both artists have similar music at this time, that being the reason why both were chosen to contribute to the soundtrack..
I was 10 the first time I saw ELO on television. What I could tell at the time was the sound. It was all their own. Thanks to Jeff Lynne and ELO for lots of good times
Love, love, love their music...........they always were my favorite band! I'm glad I grew up in the 70's & 80's to listen and rock to some of the greatest bands. Where are they today when we REALLY need them??? Miss you ELO......
My gosh, I so love ELO. I wish to god I grew up with them. Late bloomer. =) To be more precise, I cringe to say it, but Xanadu was my first encounter with one of the greatest artiest of the 70's & 80's.
Hey, at least I rediscovered them now. Truly amazing musicians.
I love this song... I think it's just the feeling and/or because it is an original ELO album with original members. Never stop rockin' the light of the orchestra!
@MikePaulShoemaker - snobbery has bugger all to do with it. I stand by the remarks I made earlier. It's an opinion, a very considered one too. You think it's a great song. Fine. I don't. Not even remotely close to great. Style has very little to do with it. You want a truely great ELO song - `Wild West Hero'.
I agree 100000% with you. Wild West Hero is a masterpiece. This song... I like, I think it's nice. Not much more than that. Long live Electric Light Orchestra's 73-77 period. TRULY INCREDIBLE. In every way, it's amazing music.
bev bevan writ a book in 1980,the electric light orchestra story, published by mushroom publishing,it's a great book, but very hard to find now, hope this is some use to you, keep listening to the music.

@yaywhewclips242 I just heard Calling America for the first time last week. You're right ... they are one of the most underrated groups ever. Their music is absolutely gorgeous and uplifting ... I could listen to them all day.
@yaywhewclips242 Rolling Stone magazine perpetrated so much lasting damage on the reputation of REALLY GOOD bands (like ELO, Queen and many others) with their BULLSHIT album reviews in the late '70s and '80s. Rolling Stone is now an irrelevant joke while all these talented bands have had the last laugh. I think ELO is due for a rediscovery.
If being a nerd means got good taste for good music, I´m more nerd than Robert Carradine and Anthony Edwards are!!!!(people who got my age and see "Revenge of the Nerds" movie knows what I mean)
It is true that ELO was not successful in the UK. There are other groups who've left the UK to become popular elsewhere: Platinum Blonde and Gowan both left the UK to make it in Canada.
I agree with RadaMcLaren32C. No E.L.O. no Depeche Mode, etc. As for the rest Jeff Lynne himself said all they wanted to do was make good music--and that's what they did.
It listens to this hits and other songs in RADIO DISCOTEQUE. It enters in GOOGLE the words RADIO DISCOTEQUE and it discovers a new dimension of radio in Internet.

@yaywhewclips242 - Did you not hear ZOOM, which is almost entirely Jeff Lynne...totally different from the ELO II 'fiasco'.

@yaywhewclips242 I just heard Calling America for the first time last week. You're right ... they are one of the most underrated groups ever. Their music is absolutely gorgeous and uplifting ... I could listen to them all day.

@yaywhewclips242 I agree. That is when I was in college. Yikes.

I'm probably a big nerd for hitting the refresh button so I can keep replaying this song, but it's a good little tune.

Pues sí.Eran unos cantantes los que ponían las voces por ellos 2.¡¡Qué decepción!!.No me lo esperaba.

Aunque con muchas reminiscencias de The Beatles,se quedaron sólo en un buen proyecto musical.Sin más.

If ELO had not gone to the states, Jeff would have wound up a busker

It is true that ELO was not successful in the UK. There are other groups who've left the UK to become popular elsewhere: Platinum Blonde and Gowan both left the UK to make it in Canada.

elo were one of the biggest sellers in the uk from 76 till 83, and still big, their singles and albums sold millions

I agree with RadaMcLaren32C. No E.L.O. no Depeche Mode, etc. As for the rest Jeff Lynne himself said all they wanted to do was make good music--and that's what they did.
Thanks for posting, HellRhythm.
