"why spend your leisure bereft of pleasure? amassin' treasure, why scrape n save? why look so canny at every penny? you'll take no money within the grave..." :)
My sentiments are the same as joeygsmom. This kind of music just slips through the cracks for us Americans, and we end up with all the mainstream crap, which is so . . . soulless. This is wonderful. Thanks for uploading.
thanks, kellyonell, this song is fantastic, but i´m searching for another gaelic song (probably sung by luke) but i don´t remember the title. Are you able to help me?
go híontach! Kelly, mar is gnáth (Wonderful stuff, Kelly, as usual)
strasheep - the original song in Gaelic was written by a Mayoman - Risteard Bairéad - in the 18th century, I think. Ciarán probably pronounces Munster Irish style alright - as it was/is the type of Irish most commonly taught to us in school. He having been a more assiduous scholar than most of the rest of us... Hope he's teaching the words to them up there after all he sufferred don here near the end..
then ciarán sings a version of the verse in irish - its essentially the same meaning - as close a translation i spose with rhyming and naturlness in it
Im American, we dont hear much of this over here, but I love it! Kellyoneill youve made me a fan for life with your awesome recordings, bless you girl
the first verse means live now and dont waist time worrying about money you cant take money to the grave so lets have anoter round the second means work to live dont live to workthe third says dont worry about politics lets have another round and the last verse is about a man that with money and no happyness so why spend yer liesure bereft of plesure glasses together another round
Aye, could be. He was a Clareman as far as I know. Came up to Dublin to study in UCD, met the natives and the rest is history. Some parts of Clare would speak the Connacht dialect and some the Munster.
SAF57, Preab san ól is the Irish for "The swagger of drink", but the essence of the Irish verses is the English translation. Más tír na tíre, diúc nó rí thú ní chuirfear pingin leats'tú dul faoin bhfód is approximated by the English, whereas the last line (ná bheidh go siorraí chur preab san ól) is quite different to the English. btw, is that Ulster Irish he's singing in? I just have Caighdéan Óifigiúil, and its totally lost on me.
I love the country accent :)

s iomaí slí sin do bhíos ag daoine
Ag cruinniú píosaí is ag déanamh stóir,
'S a laghad a smaoiníos ar ghiorra a tsaoil seo,
Go mbeidh siad sínte faoi leac go fóill.
Más tiarna tíre, diúc no rí thú,
Ní rachaidh pingin leat s tú dul faoin bhfód,
Mar sin is dá bhrí sin, níl beart níos críonna
Ná bheith go síoraí ag cur preab san ól.

Bsically it's an irish drinking song. It's saying to drink up cos life is too short and we'll be dead soon enough (in a nutshell)
