  • The music of Steve Reich is utterly pretentious and deeply boring. I guess if you never heard the modal music of John Coltrane it serves as a third-rate substitute. For those who know Coltrane's music, Reich is an insult. He is a successful fake kinda like the fast-food places that offer bad versions of various cuisines to people who don't know what the real thing tastes like.

  • @larharo I think that are very wrong in that statement. It doesn't seem like you have researched buch of his work. or maybe I need to do some more listening.......

  • Heheh, which one is the math teacher?

  • @sonicpsychiatry Xenakis and Reich are far different planes, yes, but I see no reason to believe why neither of them are both equal in artistic merit. They both had different intents in their music and both executed their ideas fairly well.

  • @MusicaRicercata If I may add: if the two composers do share similarities in their music, one would be the visceral power that resound so well. Reich's Daniel Variations are just as striking and beautiful as Xenakis' Pithoprakta (possibly my favorite work of his) or Erikhthon.

  • I saw this piece at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 1993. Steve Reich sat next to the sound man on the big mixer a few rows in front of me. Great concert.

  • hahaha

  • Listening to The Cave was an amazing, mind-altering experience. LOVE it and him! (Q:"Who Was Sarah?" A:"She is older and closer to the source.")

  • I'd kill to actually see the whole of "The Cave" D:

  • Thanks for being such a good example.

  • You're presumably unfamiliar with Reich's work. Some of it is indeed not very listenable, however I don't believe you've heard some of his best works through an appropriate medium (ie: not YouTube). Otherwise, please enlighten us with what you feel is tasteful and not pretentious. I've been critical to the core my whole life, and I find much of Reich's work to be fantastic. I suggest Music for 18 Musicians, Eight Lines, Electric Counterpoint (esp. III), Daniel Variations and this, The Cave Act1V

  • I suggest Music for 18 Musicians, Eight Lines, Electric Counterpoint (especially part III, "Fast"), Daniel Variations, and from this (0:09 to 0:24), The Cave Act 1 Part V.

  • IS there a complete video recording of the piece??

  • Yes. It even includes the purely typing movements. if you like reich, i recommend it

  • ooops... just saw the "video" part of your question. NO. There is a DVD of Reich's Three Tales included with the CD. But to date, I believe, The Cave is only available on CD. But, it is a complete CD.

  • I to wish there was a complete video of this work! Where did you get this video?

  • 短すぎる( ̄Д ̄;;

  • そうですね。。。

    It is too short!
