@Jaeger2011 LOL its spelt QI dumfuck, embarrasing much, and anyway i got a phd and proved evolution is fake SO I DONT CARE WHAT YOU THINK, aha EMBARRASING FOR YOU
@CherryViz I don't know how people can be this stupid. The OP already said that this was an animation. I swear, every year people are getting dumber and dumber.
A higher-resolution texture would've been really helpful. Even better, make the ball fully 3d - give it a high-res dusty/rocky texture and make its actual surface seem rocky.
@TheTiivik Yes. The zoom is what caused that distortion at the end. For the most part it seemed to track alright with the zooming. This is the first scene I was able to get to track with the voodoo tracker. I don't really have much experience with tracking otherwise.
@IceCreamMatt15 I should also add that the zoom on the virtual camera changed to keep the tracking good. When I tried to undo the zoom then the the scene came out of sync with the tracking. This is why the shadow is distorted.
you're a genius! how come noone ever thought about it. Just mention a tracking software in the title and every1 is like "omfg how real zomg best video evaaar"
Looks great, but you should tweak the lighting, the shadow gets longer as the ball rolls closer to the camera, which isn't realistic if it's being lit by sunlight.
U used 3ds max and just did a havok simon a textured sphere that was on top of a plane with a matte/shadow material and then composite it on top of your live action plate, right?
What I want to know is what you used to track. Was it one of the crappy free programs like icarus and voodoo or was it Boujou?
I didn't actually use havok. Just animated a ball rolling on a path.
I did use voodoo tracker if I remember right. I also agree that it is pretty crappy. It worked great for this shot, but my other test plates it didn't work well at all. What program do you recommend for tracking. I would like to learn something better.
I use voodoo too, but it's only worked once. If money isn't an issue, I recommend Boujou. I used the demo for a shot and it tracked perfectly where voodoo couldn't find a single point.
The problem with the demo is you can't save anything.
@IceCreamMatt15 I wouldn't call it crappy, but once the ball gets close to the camera the texture on it starts to look somewhat like something out of a N64 game.
sometimes that happens because of barrel lens distortion, you can run your video through a de-lens barrelling filter type thing, which removes the barrel effect, which should help with distortiions.
Did you zoom the camera out in MAX to match the movement, or did you just physically move the camera backwards and away from the object? First couple movements look good but the last couple zoom-outs seemed to have parallax problems. Nice job though!
I just filmed my street, but when it match moved. At the end the camera lens in max distorted it or something. I tried changing the zoom on the camera, but then it undid the match move, and I am not skilled enough / have enough time to fix ti just for a test shot.
i think your 3d camera is zoomed in too much, you can tell when the model gets close, the shadow gets stretchy, and the ATST looked a bit strange when it got close too. but, i have to say barbara that was good work nonetheless
Ya, I totally agree. The zoom ended up distorting the camera near the end. I tried to fix it at the time I did this, but it would have been more effort than the time I wanted to put into this since I was just quickly trying out the match moving.
i see teh SAME problem with all these cinema 4d, maya etc videos. teh computerized object always looks way brighter than the rest of teh vid. you need to make the object look as though it was recorded with teh same camera and in teh same place/lighting . sometimes teh objects look more clear too and it should match teh rest of teh vid. i dont even know how to make these things, but those parts are noticable and sound like easy fixes
I liked this test very much:) Combined with an actor running (rotoscoped) it could be a Indie-Spoof :) Check out my vids, I´ve got some matchmoving films myself.
I think what happens is because the ball gets closer to the camera the match mover started to distort the scene to keep the camera match working. In the future I'm going to try to keep objects like that from getting so close.
your match moving was excellent. it was the texture/lighting you applied to the ball that gave the effect away. but i was sold. it really gave out the feeling that a giant boulder was rolling up to you.
Heh, I've been trying to do some camera tracking in Maya. I got down how to do it, but as I had to rip off a video from youtube for practice, the quality is absolutely terrible, and makes it impossible to track accurately.
The video was actually some footage by a friend of mine, who unfortunately has not made the poor-man's stead-cam yet.
I need to make him one, and hopefully, when he gets the high-quality footage to me, my attempt at accurate tracking will succeed.
The background is video I shot from a Canon camera. I motion tracked it with Voodoo Tracker and then put a ball on it in 3dmax. I could have done the whole thing with an image single image and it probably would have been easier. But the main purpose was trying to get a good 3d track from video footage.
