I agree with @kozmon0t. I hate 1.5k, 5k, 10k races like that no records will be broken. You dont need to watch whole race but just the last 400. 13:14 is not a high result for them especially for Bekele. Shame on him and good job for El G for kicking the ass of CURRENT 5k world record holder
@kozmon0t What the hell are you talking about? That made no sense idiot, you should get shit just for saying that. You probably don't even have a clue about the 5000m anyway.
@kozmon0t Oh, did I hurt your feelings you little trolling asshole? I got the last word, if you're not reading my reply then you won't see that I have the last word ha ha to you. Idiot.
I wonder what the other runners on the line must be saying to themselves realizing that both Kenenisa Bekele and Hicham El-Guerrouj are on the line next to you. They must be saying something to the effect of, "Well I'll be going for bronzie today".
@formanm19 Well Kipchoge beat both runners in the 2003 World Championships, he at least had a chance, but here was beaten (and indeed, from this point onwards, his spirit was crushed repeatedly by Bekele).
2'58 the 1st F. Kilometer!! Why did you long distance runners permitted that easy pace for the Morocan!! You should killed hicham since the very begining!! with a faster pace.
@176rafael Would've worked out if the last few kilometers were harder. That said, Bekele ran 2:31 for the first kilometer in Paris and was still beaten by El Guerrouj. Either way, nobody wanted to push it on in this race.
I m berber from north africa and all you see there , there is no fucking Arabic there , they are all African born ,the Arabic they are from middle east guys .....El guerrouJ he is berber ,from village elbrkane in Berber its mean darck
@bejakabyle I'm so sorry for you man and for the likes of you...just total IDIOTS...MOROCCO is as great as it is because of it's diversity and mixed cultures. REAL MOROCCANS don't give a "rats ass" about who's arab or who's berber. all that matters is whether you're proud to be Moroccan and strive for the good of Morocco and all the people of Morocco...
Why did the announcer say, El Geurrouj would have to start his kick with 600 meters to go against 5000 meter runners??? Hicham was the 1500 champ and had superior foot speed to the other runners. El Geurrouj played this one perfectly, and not with 600 meters to go.
@CYHOFL That was typically how EL G was strongest. A long, sustained kick from 600 yards out was generally EL G's best option. Yes he had great speed but there were others in that field who could (and had) outkicked him over shorter stretches
Obviously the announcer was wrong that he HAD to start his kick that far out but it was not an unreasonable assumption that tactically he should have. One imagines El G prepared for just such a short-kick scenario this time around.
@CYHOFL Because at the world championships prior he was outkicked.. Not to mention El G wasnt well known to kick like Lagat. He was like alan webb, only used to rabbitted races where there was no kick.
@mamowolde I can see what you're saying, especially if it was a 1500 race. Even if it was a 5000 race with someone like Lagat in the race, then it makes sense for El Geurrouj to start earlier. I would think that Bekele, as great as he's been, would have a great deal of difficulty getting away from El Geurrouj when they're so close together on the last lap. It was just so satisfying to see El Geurrouj pull this one out. No one deserved it more.
I remember NBC saying that after El Guerrouj won the 1500, Morocco's prince called him personally to tell him that the king was too excited to do so. You know how big you are when the royal family dials directly to your cell phone XD
Hicham El Guerrouj el flaco sufrio mucho en el 96 y en el 2000 tenia la espina clavada por eso que en los 1500 antes de esta prueba, cuando gano lloro como un niño botando toda su bronca
@kiskedis Long-distance runners don't like to carry all that muscle weight for long periods of time, it is unnecessary exhaustion. Sprinters have larger fast twitch muscles that help them attain the speed they need quickly.
El G was awesome. They should've tried to run the kick out of him, but Bekele should've gone hard in the last 6 or 7 laps, a bit like Marty Liquori was saying.
@joeyyowee he probably did. bekele's probably got the best kick ever for a distance runner, but its not good enough to beat a middle distance runner's.
They basically jog (for them )11 laps and still run 13:14. That is ridiculous. How easy they run 63's...like they are not even trying. Most people can't run one 63 second lap.
I would have loved to break 14 minutes...they are breaking 13.
I disagree. In my opinion, it was a race that played right to into El Guerrouj's hands. That doesn't, of course, detract from the great legend of Hicham El Guerrouj (and Bekele too), but compared to their race in 2003 (a thriller from start to finish), this race produced few fireworks other than that extremely fast last lap.
If it wasn't for El Guerrouj, Bekele could have emulated the accomplishment of a great Finn named Lasse Viren. Instead, El Guerrouj emulated the achievement of another great Finn: Paavo Nurmi. Bekele gets the Ville Ritola prize in Athens.
i agree. i admire them so much. could you imagine practically sprinting 3 miles on a track?? the 5000m is hard enough on a pretty course with a breeze and fresh air...
@Maindsy ahhh, technically, most people's heart and lungs can pump enough oxygen to run this fast, but your body wouldn't be able to process it..... hence the main goal of most training regimes focuses on oxygen uptake and the ability to transport oxygen. Science lesson. Haha :-)
Even faster, because 52.93 passed between Kipchoge starting the final lap and El G finishing it. El G was about 0.4 seconds behind at the bell, so around 52.5 or so.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you notice that El Guerroj never shares the lead in this race......Bekele does......Bekele's race is more impressive here than El Guerroj because Bekele had the work ethic, and the courage to share the lead during the race. Better luck next time El Guerroj, but you were not as impressive as Bekele.
Okay, that was the most pathetic statement I have ever heard of in my life, bordering on stupidity. 1. El G, like any miler, has the fast finish that people like Bekele should try to upset; obviously they failed to do that; 2. Even Bekele admitted that he has made many mistakes in his 5000s, so I'd hardly call his work "impressive;" 3. Are you saying that El G, the greatest mile runner in history who duly ran 25 to 30K per day HAD NO WORK ETHIC?!!! Bekele lost, El G won; FACE IT!
The theory you call pathetic is based on runner's like Ron Clarke from Australia, Steve Prefontaine, Paula Radcliffe, and others who understand how much harder it is to lead reducing the wind resistance so that the others can follow. I'm not saying El G isn't the best, or didn't deserve to win. I am saying that Bekele worked harder in that race, and El G did not beat him by much if you pay attention.
It is the strategy of El G in this race to draft off others, and use his sprint in the end. yay
Well judging by the finishing time in this race (a slow crawl compared to both El G and Bekele's PR), I'd have to say that he didn't work nearly as hard as you said he was. Besides, Bekele did the same thing: let Kipchoge lead, wait until the last 200m and then kick, but El G caught up and past...
You mean Bekele let Kipchoge SHARE the lead.......not too much doubt here that if El G had the courage to share the lead, he would have lost this race.
El G usually leads in the last 800 meters of the race, at which point he is usually never caught. Have you not seen the 1500 meter final? A lot of people, especially after experiencing the sort of thing El G experienced '96 and '00 would not have done the sort of thing El G did (last 800m 1:46.7). Or how about the last 800m of the fastest championship 5000m (2003): El G took 2nd by 0.04s, then came here to beat both Kip and Bekele for Olympic Gold. Again... what you say is just rubbish.
You know, springsteel333, I am glad that you are the only person I know who thinks like you do. I mean, the phenomenal sprinting ability of Kenenisa Bekele is quite obvious, especially as seen by his 10K last lap, and yet El G, despite having one of his worst years of his career, being way past his best, manages one of the greatest athletics feats in history (1500 + 5000), including outkicking this Ethiopian phenom. El G is a living legend of Track and Field athletics. Just leave it like that.
You are wrong. First, running 200 miles a week would start to weaken the immune systems of runners (i.e. Alberto Salazar). Second, Haile Gebreselassie (a LONG DISTANCE runner) ran about 150-200 km (94 to 120 miles) a week, with less during racing season, way below 200. Even these days, with his marathon training he would not do that many. Third, El Guerrouj said himself that that is the sort of distance he runs, which you shouldn't underestimate. Please cite your "200 per week" statistic.
well, by they i mean the long distance people. as in marathoners and people like that. i'm in long distance and i run the mile so i consider it long distance
I also run the mile, but I would consider that (800-5000m) more middle distance, 5000m starting the LONG distance event list. Either way, I read recently that Haile Gebreselassie ran about 35km a day, 150 miles per week... 200 may be excessive.
No, both 800m and 1500m are the premier middle distance events (800-3000), which are a mix of sprinting and running. 5000 and up are the long distance events.
@YiftertheShifter1 you belong on letsrun, not on youtube.... no use trying to talk running on youtube, letsrun is where the real running conversations are at.
That is not true. Number one, El Guerrouj is also African born, so don't make him distinct from the others; two, there are several Arabs who have beaten other African born runners, the likes of Aouita, Morceli, Hissou, Guerni, Gharib, Ramzi etc...; three, Hicham el Guerrouj is a living legend of track and field athletics- the only reason he was doubted was his age/ shape that year (30, with allergies), and his competition (Bekele = WR holder).
Great points. This is still an astonishing race. Bekele routinely destroyed--and still destroys--superb runners with his last-lap kick. He had the jump on ElG here, he was ready to go.....but ElG iced him. Bekele seemed absolutely unbeatable at this distance. ElG did the job. Extraordinary.
Yeah Bekele ran like a dick. Should've dragged the kick out of El G. Slow pace will always hand the race to the faster guys. I wonder what El G would've done over 800m? 1.43?
bekele ran a very stupid race and he surely knew that. he should have known that racing at a slow pace for the 4000 was making the race basically a mile race...and guerrouj was king of the mile
this is my favorite race ever. el g owned bekele who was probably a little to arrogant, and didn't put the hammer down from 2 miles out like he should have. kipchoge almost loses bronze at the end. Also, i beleive if Pre would have been born in say 1985, he would be running with these guys. There is no difference between running a 13:15 5k when the world record is 13:05 and running a 12:45 5k with the world record at 12:35. World class = world class forever.
Hicham El Guerrouj was a great athlete, the 1500m and mile world records holder won 1500m Olympic gold medal just one day before he run this race, and look how fresh he was, he powerfully overshadowed the Kenyans and the 10000m olympic gold medal Ethiopian Bekele. No wonders that sportsmen call this guy the king of middle distances.

Ridiculous how fast they can run 5K, just awesome. They have heart and lungs of steel haha.
Maindsy 2 years ago 36
i agree. i admire them so much. could you imagine practically sprinting 3 miles on a track?? the 5000m is hard enough on a pretty course with a breeze and fresh air...
obama4eva 2 years ago
that'snthg bro..that'a actually a slow 5k..the world record belongs 2 the guy who came 2nd (12:37)..how's that? lol
estifanico 2 years ago
@Maindsy ahhh, technically, most people's heart and lungs can pump enough oxygen to run this fast, but your body wouldn't be able to process it..... hence the main goal of most training regimes focuses on oxygen uptake and the ability to transport oxygen. Science lesson. Haha :-)

@Maindsy steel lungs would rust, and give them asthma :P

Wow each mile at around 4-20 pace which is seriously fast.

Was that 52.93 for the last lap? Incredable!
Mendingle1 2 years ago
Even faster, because 52.93 passed between Kipchoge starting the final lap and El G finishing it. El G was about 0.4 seconds behind at the bell, so around 52.5 or so.

you notice that El Guerroj never shares the lead in this race......Bekele does......Bekele's race is more impressive here than El Guerroj because Bekele had the work ethic, and the courage to share the lead during the race. Better luck next time El Guerroj, but you were not as impressive as Bekele.
springsteel333 2 years ago
Okay, that was the most pathetic statement I have ever heard of in my life, bordering on stupidity. 1. El G, like any miler, has the fast finish that people like Bekele should try to upset; obviously they failed to do that; 2. Even Bekele admitted that he has made many mistakes in his 5000s, so I'd hardly call his work "impressive;" 3. Are you saying that El G, the greatest mile runner in history who duly ran 25 to 30K per day HAD NO WORK ETHIC?!!! Bekele lost, El G won; FACE IT!
YiftertheShifter1 2 years ago 3
The theory you call pathetic is based on runner's like Ron Clarke from Australia, Steve Prefontaine, Paula Radcliffe, and others who understand how much harder it is to lead reducing the wind resistance so that the others can follow. I'm not saying El G isn't the best, or didn't deserve to win. I am saying that Bekele worked harder in that race, and El G did not beat him by much if you pay attention.
It is the strategy of El G in this race to draft off others, and use his sprint in the end. yay
springsteel333 2 years ago
Well judging by the finishing time in this race (a slow crawl compared to both El G and Bekele's PR), I'd have to say that he didn't work nearly as hard as you said he was. Besides, Bekele did the same thing: let Kipchoge lead, wait until the last 200m and then kick, but El G caught up and past...
YiftertheShifter1 2 years ago
You mean Bekele let Kipchoge SHARE the lead.......not too much doubt here that if El G had the courage to share the lead, he would have lost this race.
springsteel333 2 years ago
El G usually leads in the last 800 meters of the race, at which point he is usually never caught. Have you not seen the 1500 meter final? A lot of people, especially after experiencing the sort of thing El G experienced '96 and '00 would not have done the sort of thing El G did (last 800m 1:46.7). Or how about the last 800m of the fastest championship 5000m (2003): El G took 2nd by 0.04s, then came here to beat both Kip and Bekele for Olympic Gold. Again... what you say is just rubbish.
YiftertheShifter1 2 years ago
You know, springsteel333, I am glad that you are the only person I know who thinks like you do. I mean, the phenomenal sprinting ability of Kenenisa Bekele is quite obvious, especially as seen by his 10K last lap, and yet El G, despite having one of his worst years of his career, being way past his best, manages one of the greatest athletics feats in history (1500 + 5000), including outkicking this Ethiopian phenom. El G is a living legend of Track and Field athletics. Just leave it like that.
YiftertheShifter1 2 years ago 3
25 to 30k a day!?!?! that is NOTHING!!! they runn A LOT more than that a day. about 200 miles a week
JFJHTJ 2 years ago
You are wrong. First, running 200 miles a week would start to weaken the immune systems of runners (i.e. Alberto Salazar). Second, Haile Gebreselassie (a LONG DISTANCE runner) ran about 150-200 km (94 to 120 miles) a week, with less during racing season, way below 200. Even these days, with his marathon training he would not do that many. Third, El Guerrouj said himself that that is the sort of distance he runs, which you shouldn't underestimate. Please cite your "200 per week" statistic.
YiftertheShifter1 2 years ago
well, by they i mean the long distance people. as in marathoners and people like that. i'm in long distance and i run the mile so i consider it long distance
JFJHTJ 2 years ago
I also run the mile, but I would consider that (800-5000m) more middle distance, 5000m starting the LONG distance event list. Either way, I read recently that Haile Gebreselassie ran about 35km a day, 150 miles per week... 200 may be excessive.
YiftertheShifter1 2 years ago
800 is considered prolonged sprint.1500 thru 5000 is middle distance.10 000 and above is long distance.
estifanico 2 years ago
No, both 800m and 1500m are the premier middle distance events (800-3000), which are a mix of sprinting and running. 5000 and up are the long distance events.

How many people were doubting El Guerrouj before the start of this run?
YiftertheShifter1 2 years ago
Probably quite a few. To most people it would seem unlikely that an Arabic man could beat so many African born people.
blueflash777 2 years ago
That is not true. Number one, El Guerrouj is also African born, so don't make him distinct from the others; two, there are several Arabs who have beaten other African born runners, the likes of Aouita, Morceli, Hissou, Guerni, Gharib, Ramzi etc...; three, Hicham el Guerrouj is a living legend of track and field athletics- the only reason he was doubted was his age/ shape that year (30, with allergies), and his competition (Bekele = WR holder).
YiftertheShifter1 2 years ago
Great points. This is still an astonishing race. Bekele routinely destroyed--and still destroys--superb runners with his last-lap kick. He had the jump on ElG here, he was ready to go.....but ElG iced him. Bekele seemed absolutely unbeatable at this distance. ElG did the job. Extraordinary.

I ran the Cooper test ( in 12 minutes )
3310 metres in 1982. Maybe in the best days it would be a 3500. I admit I can´t beat these runners in any conditions.

Yes but I beat the most in my school in that. Not for the real runners of course !

i can imagine how the pressure must have been lifted a bit after he won his 1500m race. im sure that made him much more relaxed for this race.

Yeah Bekele ran like a dick. Should've dragged the kick out of El G. Slow pace will always hand the race to the faster guys. I wonder what El G would've done over 800m? 1.43?
bootymanager 3 years ago
actually he ran an "unofficial" time of 1:42.7 in a time trial. i read about his personal bests on wikipedia.

Incredible race! El Guerrouj showed why he's THE MAN! The Ethiopian's had him boxed in and he still won....

it's amazing how fit these guys are, they're like machines.

bekele ran a very stupid race and he surely knew that. he should have known that racing at a slow pace for the 4000 was making the race basically a mile race...and guerrouj was king of the mile
deucecued 3 years ago
i agree becuz bekele runs better when he takes it out faster becuz he is very fast and he just seems to keep picking it up

this is my favorite race ever. el g owned bekele who was probably a little to arrogant, and didn't put the hammer down from 2 miles out like he should have. kipchoge almost loses bronze at the end.
