It makes me sad to see this magical story, written by probably the best children's author who ever lived, turned into a commercial 'product', with words such as 'candy' and 'freaks', and Willa Wonka portrayed, not as the kind, rather quirky character in the book, but a sarcastic person who does not at all resemble Dahl's creation. His books are timeless classics, and turning one into another of the myriad feature films that are made for the purpose of generating wealth is,in my opinion, a crime.
Terrible movie. Every character is nothing more than a device to make you hate everyone but Charlie, they have no depth and don't even feel like characters. The subplot of Wonka's father is pointless and dreadfully handled because it really has no effect on the story and is resolved with a few minutes to spare. I could go on, but YouTube only allows so much space.
Everyone was so busy talking about Whitney Houston and St. Valentines that nobody noticed David Kelly ( the dude who played as Grandpa Joe in the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) died.
@Games2097 Now that you mention it, I've always had the urge to switch behavior and act like a grumpy teacher! That way I could teach children everywhere that "childs" is not a word! (Or at least that the eyes closed from laughing face uses a capitol "X" XD)
Come on, what's wrong with some healthy debating? I can't speak for Frisby, but I don't see the crime in going a few rounds.
Personally, I think the second one follows the book more that the first. :)
Trivia: Roald Dahl wrote a second book (Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator), but he hated the first movie, so he refused to let the second book be made into a movie. This movie was released after his passing, but his wife stated that he would probably like this movie better than the first. ^.^
Why are people arguing about which version is better? I love both! They are both absolutely brilliant and I wouldn't change a thing. They are both weird, wonderful and funny. They are very different, like how the old wonka was friendly towards the kids and this one is just plain honest. But they are both great films. I have to say I was a little annoyed in the original during the 'I've Got A Golden Ticket' duet between charlie and jo, they were out of sync. but otherwise they are both terrific!
im glad to hear that people liked this movie better because i thought i was the only one. I think because not growing up with the older one maybe I didn't understand its true value as a classic, but with tim burton directing you can't go wrong.
@GothicHearts05 Actually, when this movie came out, Dahl was a little, uh, dead. But this one is all the more guilty of stuff he hated about the last one (like putting too much emphasis on Wonka and not enough on Charlie). If you're going by his word on which of the classic movies based on his books are good, every last one of them sucks except (rumor is) The BFG, the only one that isn't so much considered a classic.
Do people not understand movies any more? the new willy wonka movie was horrible. There were so many great references to literature in that movie while the new movie had zip.
And the deep, insightful, and profound message in this movie is : "candy doesn't need to have a point, that's why it's candy". Thank you Tim Burton, you truly are a poet.
@Frisby2007 new one shit, the old one is has a better story, this one is like just about willy wonka instead of the kid who suppose to be the main character
hell no the remake is sooo0o0o0o much better i saw the 70's version and they has such horrible sound and video quality..acting was terrible and so was the music.
this movie was awful. Depp is not right for the part. He seemed extremely gay. The 'oompa loompa's were disturbing. All the acting was horrible. It all seemed to be thrown together.
Johnny Deep is a great actor, but there are just some old classic movies you just dont remake AT ALL. I believe this is probably one they should have never remade. The 70's one was the best!
@mailman2430 No sorry this one better because it show more of Wonka life and it tell his story with his dad. in the book he was funny and was not nice untill charlie change him.
@mailman2430 Are all of you fans of that shitty 70s Wonka movie naturally idiots or do you not know what a remake even is? this movie is NOT a remake. The old one turned a beautiful book into shit, & this movie FOLLOWED the book. It's a re-adaption, NOT a remake!
@Frisby2007 Well actually, whatever term is more accurate, it's never really considered incorrect to call a movie a remake when it tells the same story that a previous movie did. And since the new movie shoves all the characters into either the sickly sweet or aggressively obnoxious category, where the old movie stayed true to the book's portrayl, it's a pretty weak excuse in the first place to troll on the old movie XD
@itstheblueguy Well it's not a remake. And the old one didn't stay true to the book, at all. That's a lie on it's own. Saying that is like saying Twilight is a far better vampire movie than Bram Stoker's Dracula. This movie actually FOLLOWED & stood TRUE to the book, so it's a re-adaption. Learn the difference.
@Frisby2007 You're more than a little clunky in the way you tie "truer to the book" to "better" (I know reviews aren't on your side, but surely THAT isn't your best bet), but pretending that truer to the book is actually what you care about; plot-wise yes, apart from the unnecessary "crazy dentist dad" subplot, but character-wise it changed... actually, I don't think there was one character in both that the old one didn't portray closer to the book. As for "readapTAtion vs remake...
@itstheblueguy No the subplot to Wonka's character was a good thing, because it tells us why Wonka loves candy so much, & at times why he's rather rude to the guests. As far as the character goes, Depp's Wonka changed the theme of being an elegant, child molester like the old one, & stood more on the insane side, seeing that in the book his character was described as almost insane.
@Frisby2007 So changing the book is okay as long as it's messing with Wonka's character? Instead of the guide and source of the imagination, he must be flawed to shift the focus and development off Charlie and onto him, which Dahl specifically said he didn't want? Funny you should say "child molester" though, since Depp's Wonka looks like Michael Jackson and for the first time seems more aloof and reckless than wise and secure. And actually WAS accused of giving off that impression.
@itstheblueguy Doyou even know what you're talking about? Other than the fact that Dahl HATED the old one, he mainly hated how it had such little focus on the Wonka character, so Burton focused on Wonka's character more on the second half of the film to show his appreciation towards what Dahl wanted. Oh wow, just because he looked like Michael Jackson, doesn't man he's automatically supposed to be like his accused molester. The old Wonka was sure as hell interested in those kids.
@Frisby2007 Well, since I know you just pulled Dahl hating the old one for too little focus on Wonka out of thin air, I'd say yes, yes I do. What Dahl hated was the movie putting too MUCH emphasis on Wonka. And after touting how much closer the new one is to the book, you claim it doing that far more is good. Now since Wonka invited them, I'd think he'd be interested in them seeing his factory. Depp as a man-child with a clear secret motive actually DID get the molester criticism
@itstheblueguy Oh no, the new one is far superior to the shitty 70s for far more reasons than it being closer to the book; The acting was phenomenal, the dialogue is great, the character are far more realistic (& likable for that matter), the story is far better & actually tells a moral, the plot isn't predictable crap, & then there's the fact that it gives us more in-depth story to the Wonka character.
@Frisby2007 And I'd say Burton's lame version failed with obnoxious caricatures who were cloyingly altruistic, aggressively unsubtle, and/or one-dimensionally cruel, an unpleasant, forced atmosphere, and split focus on sour sadomasochism with the bad kids and forced-in treacle about hobbies vs family relations; the original classic drawfs it with more subtle, better-handled characters, an atmosphere both charming and uncertain, and it's focus on wonder, imagination, and rewared patience.
@marulpragasam Yeah, but careful where you say that, or you'll be asked to concede that the old one, popular for sheer love of its timeless appeal, is like Twilight and the new one, which hacks up classic characters, targets the emo romantics in the audience, and gains popularity for featuring a fad (Johnny Depp, even on the rare occasion when he's not fantastic) is like Brahm Stoker's Dracula.
@itstheblueguy A remake is a newer version of something already made in the same medium. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was the first movie based on Dahl's story, and now Burton has made another movie telling a new version of the story. Therefor he has REmade it. "Readaptation", meanwhile, is a more specific term that also applies to it. So Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate factory is a remake and, more specifically, a readaptation. Isn't definition play fun!
@mailman2430 All true, and it really wasn't even Depp's best performance. He was often funny but just as often annoying, and it wasn't a good call to make Wonka more oblivious than eccentric.
I don't know the old movie, but yesterday my twins (6) watched the movie for the first time and they agreed that it had to be the best movie ever made. I also enjoyed it.
@thegroove14 In fact, he hated every film adaptation of his books except, apparently, The BFG, which is ussually considered the most underwhelming on an otherwise great list.
Ok, stop saying you like the old one more, & that the old one is better (& its not). No one cares, this is about the new movie, & there is nothing about this movie that should have you saying that crap.
@Frisby2007 Are you out of your mind? Willy Wonka is so much better in the old one and is so much more interesting. Charlie grows up while learning lessons and such. In the new one charlie is so god damn innocent and doesn't go wrong. Therefore charlie from the original is better. The grand dads are pretty much the same. The ompa lompas from the original are much more memorable and have better songs. The original is the better movie unless you only care about special effects.
@arexyouxepicxenough Why is he better? Because Gene fucking Wilder plays him? Yeah, he grows up still learning to be an ungrateful, selfish prick. Better songs?! Yeah, because songs that all sound the same are truly memorable & better (and they're not). No, the original is nothing but shit, filled with horrible acting, terrible casting choices, unlikable characters, poorly written songs, a predictable plot, laughable story, & dialogue that makes the dialogue in New Moon look astounding.
@Frisby2007 You havn't explained to me why 1. The acting is bad. 2. unlikable characters or 3. terrible casting.
The remake has no interesting characters. The characters aren't interesting for the acters only for the characters they portrait. The kid learns nothing and isn't relatable, Willy wonka is boring as fuck, the grand dads are the same pretty much and the bratty kids aren't that great in the new movie. The music is well done in the remake but the original is more memorable and great.
@arexyouxepicxenough 1. The acting is horrible, I don't need to explain it because it is (& only an ignorant idiot can't see it). 2. Every character is a rotten, unlikable runt who all deserve what they get, including Charlie. 3. NO ONE in this movie looks like their characters, NO ONE. He doesn't need to learn anything because you know why? Because he teaches something the old Charlie didn't learn, to be GRATEFUL for what you have & appreciate your family. And stop calling it a remake, it's not
@Frisby2007 It is a remake because it follows the story and includes all the same cast changing the story slightly. The old acting is so much better and only those who don't now film are those who say it isn't. Every character is rotton except for the main characters who are all likeable. The old willy wonka just handed out tickets not to children exclusivly so who is more of a pedophile? Charlie in the original learns his lesson and grows up where as the new one teaches willy wonka a lesson.
@Frisby2007 Willy Wonka is better in the original because he is a lunatic that is very fascinating where the new one he is a lost boy and boring. They both have the same plot. The dialogue is much better in the original. You really care about the characters in both movies. The remake is good but it doesn't touch the original. Charlie learns his lesson in the original not in the new one.
@arexyouxepicxenough No, the old Wonka is a pedophile who looks like he was ready to touch those kids at any moment, while the new one was insane, rude, & even funny. Yeah because "He's up above us in a million pieces" is far better than "Don't touch that squirrel's nuts". The new one is not a remake, learn what a remake s, because this movie is a re-adaption. What lesson? To remain a rotten, selfish prick, while hthe new one remains a sweet, appreciative, & grateful kid?
@Frisby2007 He teaches wonka a lesson that is exclusive to adults. The old "grow up" lesson that is bullshit. Watch this video /watch?v=2maHg2GGmNY and see my side.
this movie creeps me out. the fact of what happened to the kids i mean. like veruca got covered in garbage and agustus got covered in chocolate, thats not that bad and they can just get cleaned up. but violet is BLUE, and mike tv is all stretched out! thats so creepy to see that..
I also like how they don't end the movie when Willy asks Charlie to go live with him. And the scene with Willy and his dad was neat. I ALSO love how they show what happened to the kids after they got in those little "accidents". I know I said I didn't like the 70s versions music that much, but I gotta admit, Pure Imagination was a kick ass song. Overall, I like the original movie, but I love the remake.
I like this movie better. I was never a big fan of musical movies, and this movie didn't have much music. I didn't like the 70s music that much. This one was good. I like how this movie reveals more about Willys life, and how he met the oompa loompas. But, Johnny Depp wasn't as good as the 70s willy wonka. Though, Johnny did do an okay job as Willy Wonka. All the actors were great, the room full of candy and the squirrel room looked FANTASTIC.
i never read the book, but i like the old version better. willy wonka and the oompa loompas are less creepy and only one of the kids is obnoxious as opposed to all of them except charlie.
its really funny because i seached charlie and the chocolate factory and watched the first bideo suggestion and the top comment said "i dont need to watch the whole of this original movie to know that this guy kicked johnny depp's ass up and down the factory" and now the top comment here says "This movie is better than that shitty 70s one. This movie did everything right that the old one did wrong (which was everything). Only God knows how much I HATE the old one." :D
LOL i was making the same facial expressions as willy wonka the whole time i was watching the movie without realizing...god knows what had gotten into me
the 1971 version is my fav, but this one is good too, but just b/c this one is closer to the book doesn't mean its better.... sure the 70s version is more different from the book, that doesn't mean it sucks... seriously, that is the only excuse people make.... "ooh, i hate the 70s version because it is not so much like the book, so it sucks".... that is not a good reason to say a movie is bad.
@EarthboundSNES I see ass loads of hypocrisy in that. Tens of thousands bitch & whine about how Disney's movies have nothing to do with their sources, & yet NONE of them bitch & whine about how the old one doesn't stay true to it's source. This movie is better than that shitty 70s one because it has better acting, a great set of casting choices, dazzling effects, likable characters, & a lovely & far superior ending with better morals to teach.
A British kid would never say "candy" to refer to chocolate.

itstheblueguy 1 month ago 2

And actually WAS accused of giving off that impression.
itstheblueguy 1 month ago
@itstheblueguy Doyou even know what you're talking about? Other than the fact that Dahl HATED the old one, he mainly hated how it had such little focus on the Wonka character, so Burton focused on Wonka's character more on the second half of the film to show his appreciation towards what Dahl wanted. Oh wow, just because he looked like Michael Jackson, doesn't man he's automatically supposed to be like his accused molester. The old Wonka was sure as hell interested in those kids.
Frisby2007 1 month ago
@Frisby2007 Well, since I know you just pulled Dahl hating the old one for too little focus on Wonka out of thin air, I'd say yes, yes I do. What Dahl hated was the movie putting too MUCH emphasis on Wonka. And after touting how much closer the new one is to the book, you claim it doing that far more is good. Now since Wonka invited them, I'd think he'd be interested in them seeing his factory. Depp as a man-child with a clear secret motive actually DID get the molester criticism
itstheblueguy 1 month ago
@itstheblueguy Oh no, the new one is far superior to the shitty 70s for far more reasons than it being closer to the book; The acting was phenomenal, the dialogue is great, the character are far more realistic (& likable for that matter), the story is far better & actually tells a moral, the plot isn't predictable crap, & then there's the fact that it gives us more in-depth story to the Wonka character.
Frisby2007 1 month ago 30
@Frisby2007 And I'd say Burton's lame version failed with obnoxious caricatures who were cloyingly altruistic, aggressively unsubtle, and/or one-dimensionally cruel, an unpleasant, forced atmosphere, and split focus on sour sadomasochism with the bad kids and forced-in treacle about hobbies vs family relations; the original classic drawfs it with more subtle, better-handled characters, an atmosphere both charming and uncertain, and it's focus on wonder, imagination, and rewared patience.
itstheblueguy 1 month ago 33
@itstheblueguy i agree. old one >>>>>>>>> this one.
marulpragasam 1 month ago
@marulpragasam If the old one is better than this one then Twilight is better than Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Frisby2007 1 month ago in playlist oompa loompa BITCHIES
@marulpragasam Yeah, but careful where you say that, or you'll be asked to concede that the old one, popular for sheer love of its timeless appeal, is like Twilight and the new one, which hacks up classic characters, targets the emo romantics in the audience, and gains popularity for featuring a fad (Johnny Depp, even on the rare occasion when he's not fantastic) is like Brahm Stoker's Dracula.
itstheblueguy 1 month ago
@Frisby2007 So then, is that where we hit our non-negotiable differences and agree to part ways, or will we be debating this too?
itstheblueguy 1 month ago
@itstheblueguy A remake is a newer version of something already made in the same medium. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was the first movie based on Dahl's story, and now Burton has made another movie telling a new version of the story. Therefor he has REmade it. "Readaptation", meanwhile, is a more specific term that also applies to it. So Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate factory is a remake and, more specifically, a readaptation. Isn't definition play fun!
itstheblueguy 1 month ago

Frisby2007 3 months ago
look i know the old version is better, but the new one isn't bad right?:)
tc123123 3 months ago
As far as movie remakes go. It's not that bad compared to something like the Pyshco remake. It still doesn't hold a candle to the original though.
arexyouxepicxenough 3 months ago
@arexyouxepicxenough You don' know what a remake is do you? And no, this movie is better than the shitty 70s one.
Frisby2007 3 months ago
@Frisby2007 Are you out of your mind? Willy Wonka is so much better in the old one and is so much more interesting. Charlie grows up while learning lessons and such. In the new one charlie is so god damn innocent and doesn't go wrong. Therefore charlie from the original is better. The grand dads are pretty much the same. The ompa lompas from the original are much more memorable and have better songs. The original is the better movie unless you only care about special effects.
arexyouxepicxenough 3 months ago
@arexyouxepicxenough Why is he better? Because Gene fucking Wilder plays him? Yeah, he grows up still learning to be an ungrateful, selfish prick. Better songs?! Yeah, because songs that all sound the same are truly memorable & better (and they're not). No, the original is nothing but shit, filled with horrible acting, terrible casting choices, unlikable characters, poorly written songs, a predictable plot, laughable story, & dialogue that makes the dialogue in New Moon look astounding.
Frisby2007 3 months ago
@Frisby2007 You havn't explained to me why 1. The acting is bad. 2. unlikable characters or 3. terrible casting.
The remake has no interesting characters. The characters aren't interesting for the acters only for the characters they portrait. The kid learns nothing and isn't relatable, Willy wonka is boring as fuck, the grand dads are the same pretty much and the bratty kids aren't that great in the new movie. The music is well done in the remake but the original is more memorable and great.
arexyouxepicxenough 3 months ago
@arexyouxepicxenough 1. The acting is horrible, I don't need to explain it because it is (& only an ignorant idiot can't see it). 2. Every character is a rotten, unlikable runt who all deserve what they get, including Charlie. 3. NO ONE in this movie looks like their characters, NO ONE. He doesn't need to learn anything because you know why? Because he teaches something the old Charlie didn't learn, to be GRATEFUL for what you have & appreciate your family. And stop calling it a remake, it's not
Frisby2007 3 months ago
@Frisby2007 It is a remake because it follows the story and includes all the same cast changing the story slightly. The old acting is so much better and only those who don't now film are those who say it isn't. Every character is rotton except for the main characters who are all likeable. The old willy wonka just handed out tickets not to children exclusivly so who is more of a pedophile? Charlie in the original learns his lesson and grows up where as the new one teaches willy wonka a lesson.
arexyouxepicxenough 3 months ago
@arexyouxepicxenough The old one had better acting? Yeah, this argument is over.
Frisby2007 3 months ago
@Frisby2007 Yeah, you lose.
arexyouxepicxenough 3 months ago
@Frisby2007 Willy Wonka is better in the original because he is a lunatic that is very fascinating where the new one he is a lost boy and boring. They both have the same plot. The dialogue is much better in the original. You really care about the characters in both movies. The remake is good but it doesn't touch the original. Charlie learns his lesson in the original not in the new one.
arexyouxepicxenough 3 months ago
@arexyouxepicxenough No, the old Wonka is a pedophile who looks like he was ready to touch those kids at any moment, while the new one was insane, rude, & even funny. Yeah because "He's up above us in a million pieces" is far better than "Don't touch that squirrel's nuts". The new one is not a remake, learn what a remake s, because this movie is a re-adaption. What lesson? To remain a rotten, selfish prick, while hthe new one remains a sweet, appreciative, & grateful kid?
Frisby2007 3 months ago
@Frisby2007 He teaches wonka a lesson that is exclusive to adults. The old "grow up" lesson that is bullshit. Watch this video /watch?v=2maHg2GGmNY and see my side.

All the actors were great, the room full of candy and the squirrel room looked FANTASTIC.

its really funny because i seached charlie and the chocolate factory and watched the first bideo suggestion and the top comment said "i dont need to watch the whole of this original movie to know that this guy kicked johnny depp's ass up and down the factory" and now the top comment here says "This movie is better than that shitty 70s one. the 1971 version is my fav, but this one is good too, but just b/c this one is closer to the book doesn't mean its better.... sure the 70s version is more different from the book, that doesn't mean it sucks... seriously, that is the only excuse people make.... "ooh, i hate the 70s version because it is not so much like the book, so it sucks".... that is not a good reason to say a movie is bad.
EarthboundSNES 4 months ago
@EarthboundSNES I see ass loads of hypocrisy in that. Tens of thousands bitch & whine about how Disney's movies have nothing to do with their sources, & yet NONE of them bitch & whine about how the old one doesn't stay true to it's source. This movie is better than that shitty 70s one because it has better acting, a great set of casting choices, dazzling effects, likable characters, & a lovely & far superior ending with better morals to teach.
