Im a type 1 diabetic, and im very skeptical of doing what my doctors tell me.They want me taking 4+ injections a day, using as many test strips, lancets, needles, and insulin as humanly possible. This is because the companies that make those things want MONEY. If a cure is found, which it has been, those companies will make sure it isnt accessible for a LONNNNGG time. My last A1C: 5.1

You are right. Proteins are broken into amino acids to be reformed into new proteins.

Of course there is more risk of diabetes if someone in your family has it...And you can become diabetic at any age, regardless of how much chocolate you eat ! Eating a healthy diet is recommended for everyone and can certainly help to prevent diabetes but doesn't eliminate the risk completely.

Softglow, you are absolutley right, I was puzzled by the opening statement made. However, it is important to understand that anything we consume from a plant whether we lable it a "fat", "carb" or "protein" does contain sugar at some level via the photosynthesis process. Furthermore, proteins can actually turn into sugar. The glucose-alanine cycle explains why it is possible to have an elevated blood glucose while eating essentially only meat and fat. But as you said, the key is healthy eating!

Genetics is not the most important reasons that why we develop the diseases, but diet is. The difference between type 1 and type 2 is if the pancreas can produce insulin or not. Therefore, if the type 2 diabetic patient continues to load up with carbohydrates, which raise the blood glucose level, he would wipe out the beta cells of his pancreas and becomes type 1, which is insulin-dependent.

While I do not deny genetics plays a role in developing Type 1 diabetes mellitus, I strongly believe and suggest both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus are caused by diets. All carbohydrates except fibers are absorbed to become blood sugars. Proteins can be broken down and converted into blood glucose, so called "catabolism." Fats can be broken down to glycerol and fatty acids. The fatty acids with even number of carbons can be converted into blood glucose. I hear you. I was diagnosed only two weeks ago. Was very pissed off, seeing how I didn't eat garbage foods. I drank myself to diabetes. It is alright now though. I take glipizide and metformin morning and night.
