  • well that was easy lol

  • we quit doing this 20 years ago on our 490D John Deere.

  • @gangesexcavating LET ME EXPLAIN I promise you I can bite up enough clearing trash that the machine will barely pick it up. (this means more production) A hyd thumb will not pick up that much. plus most hyd thumbs pivot on the same pin as the bucket. thus there is not much space for material. plus hyd thumbs have pressure relief valve that will let the bucket over come the thumb. In my application When I'm done with the the thumb thats it until the next job.

  • @gangesexcavating And yes you can manipulate a man. thumb If you are a skilled trackhoe operator. JUST BECAUSE ITS NEW DOES NOT MEAN ITS ALWAYS BETTER.

  • Great bit of operation to find the hole first time!

  • Hi letsdig18,

If I have not said so, I hope you are Healthy, Wealthy and wise in 2012. Oh the last item is not compulsory!

    Take care,

What an interesting video. Thanks for the upload, really appreciated, as I for one have not seen this before.

  • Experienced operators don't need thumbs.

  • @gidrozin yeah but it helps speed the job up and if your pricing by the job not the hour its the smarter tool to have

  • @gidrozin deoends on what you are doing.

  • @gangesexcavating Exactly. For example for land clearing and for some demolition work it's ideal. But when you are working on a busy building site you need a hoe that's flexible and able to preform a variety of different tasks. So it's best ho have one equipped with a quick hitch, have several spare buckets for different applications, have a hammer and maybe a rotating demolition grab.

  • Welcome to 1978...

  • I hate manual thumbs, that is what i have on my backhoe and it is almost useless, hydraulic thumbs are the way to go, i think a excavator without a hydraulic thumb is almost useless.

  • @tractortom401 Dude you are crazy It shows that it take about 5 min. to do it. and you can make that time up with more productivity that the manual thumb has.

  • @IHDieselfan what the hell are you talking about.

The shown thumb are the quick, cheap and dirty alternative to nothing, they are as clumsy as a club and about the best thing that you can give them credit for is they give capability of crudely grabbing a log or some demolition debris and tossing it around. There is no manipulation of your work and they get in the way for any other work.

Come up to BC and build some logging road on Vancouver Island westcoast, LOL

    Sorry to insult you.

  • looks like a pain in the ass to me

  • I like the new how to videos; it is a lot of good stuff to know

  • nice bucket:)

  • chris it would be cool to have a video of raising it back up

  • Can a cylinder be added on to that assembly on the stick to make it hydraulic?

  • @dkchapps it can hold more pressure

  • @ dickchaps so you can squeeze things when you need to, and so it can be out of the way when you dont need it

  • @SpidermanRun funny how his name turned into dickchaps

  • Quite a chore compared to a hydraulic thumb. hahaha.

  • Me first..........I really like the new "how to videos"!

  • whats the point of having a manual thumb? like how does it work? just from the bucket can move?
