If this song weren't sung by U.S. Navy men, most of whom hadn't been around a woman in months, then this would be the epitome of desperate and slightly stalkerish!
@pompom11 I'd say with 99% certainty that your comment is 100% true ;) Also agree, this is one great tune and South Pacific is a real favorite of mine.
I went to a musical theater camp and the guys had to sing this and do choreography... The day after they learned it, I told my friend, Liam "With that choreography, there won't be any dames." XD
I remember when I was in 7th grade the 6th grade boys had to sing this song for a concert and I would watch outside the door of the chorus room and applaud and give Mrs. L the thumbs up! Those 6th graders were so adorable!!!!!!
this song is hysterical! i have to see this movie now, it looks fun but as silly as this song is, its so true! there AINT nothin like a dame! i loove women!
There is nothin like butch shirtless men in navy uniforms. Nothin in the world... Lol it's still pretty camp imo. I love how tho what most are wearing u will find influences of it in fashion these days. Those denim shirts & boots! x
Strange to think about it, but all these guys are either dead or in their late 70's early 80's now.Something tells me ther're not quite as hot looking, anymore.
@TheGodParticle Which raises an interesting question. Why, in a group of men that are equal to each other, do some go shirtless and some wear a shirt and a T-shirt? It really makes no sense, considering they are on a tropical island in the South Pacific, where being shirtless would be a lot more natural.
Gah i'm scared i'm going to remember lots of things r beautiful but brother, then there is one particular that is nothing whatsoever in any way shape or form like any other in my concert O.o i have that solo xD
@wrestlemaniac829 well have you felt like "There is nothing like a dame"? people only feel that when they get kicked out of the job or fail a big exam and loose money...
Oh ,yes!.In 50's America, if you weren't what I mentioned, you were either ignored or repressed.R&H began to address this in this musical with the song"You've got to be taught".This movie came out at the end of that extremely conformist decade. If you're aware of it, you can see that the whole movie has an undertone questioning that "innocence" (pzdump86) was referring to.
Actually, the actor was dubbed by Thurl Ravenscroft - the guy who did Tony the TIger's voice in the frosted flakes commercials and sang the Grinch songs in the Chuck Jones Christmas cartoons.
yeah my school did it my senior year and it was awesome..i never did a school play before that becuz i always trained for football and baseball when it was time to practice for the play but our senior year i had the whole football team with me do it and it was sick
7th/8th grade so it's changed a little..)and i love it. TO go with this, we're(as in the girls) singing Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair. They're some fun songs! :)

def has gay undertones, all those shirtless sailors

It just doesn;t get any better than "South Pacific."
Oklahoma, West Side Story, etc. ... good, but the South Pacific broadway stage play and the movie blockbuste shown herer tower over them all.
I recently saw the stage version, live in New York city. I must confess, I believe the movie version is far better than (this current) stage play.

Interesting that the cast would include a black guy. Very cool. In WWII, I am lead to believe (especially like my late dad's stories of the ETO), a brother would not be welcome, and he would risk death if he even glanced at one of those pretty white nurses. I know that the composers were pretty sensitive to racial issues even back then. Good call, R&H. Would that society were that tolerant then.
