great use of the quick mask tool. love it

very nice. I like your process. how your adding color? it looks like your using layer effects. are you manipulated the black and white layer itself or are you setting the blending mode to overlay? when ever i take this approach to painting like you have i tend to have a little difficulty adding vibrant color. the colors end up looking dull so i have to add a hue/saturation layer to make everything re-pop. great job!

so are you a concept artist ? for a game ? cause im studiying now at the media-college in amsterdam as an game designer (it takes 4 years) to become a conecpet artist too but this looks pretty amazing ! btw i hope my i will be teached soon to do also this fricking amazing stuff we did only work right now with CINEMA 4D and photoshop also made a few drawings everyone at that school says my art looks really great but compared to this its just shit XD (btw sry for bad english)

That is really cool Scot. I'm actually practicing the technique of starting with a gray-scale of values. I just remembered, after seeing how you added in those atmospheric colors, to use gradients to my advantage.

You're probably tired of hearing it but, holy crap this is really good. It was very interesting to watch in the beginning because it was sort of like you were building a world. Also the speed you have it set at is helpful, because I can see what your doing but when I go into Photoshop to paint, I don't feel the need to speed up the process to match you. I have one question though, what are all the red markings like at 2:43 in your video and why do you use them?

@Peteyslatts those are alpha channels. you "paint" it in to get a selection of what you want to work on, its a great way to do non-destructive work.

how does he do the lighting effects at the base of the building and behind the aircrafts? When I try to replicate the effect it looks nowhere near as good. Also, what is he doing when certain parts of the screen turn red temporarily?

@Glutymax Hi, the red area is the quickmask (hit "q" on the keyboard). you can paint on a temporarely layer and after finished painting you can convert the red painted area into a selection. Instead o using lasso, wand ....

Thank you! The key to painting mountains is value. the sky color should determine what the atmosphere color is, and the further the mountain is away from the viewer, the more atmospheric color should be added to the local color of the mountain to get as much depth as possible. Overlap, perspective, and scale will help as well. Hope that is what you were asking for.
