lol i think its about the oil spill, 11 men died (11 mothers cry),5000 feet below black smoke engulfs the sky(oil blackens the water all the way to the surface) The ocean floor explodes( explosion of the piping), choking on the black gold on which we rely(black gold is oil.) Crescent city(city on the shore), Help never came (it took BP forever to show up).

It's "the crescent city sleeps" The first verse is about Hurricane Katrina. That hit New Orleans, the Crescent City. It just makes more sense that way.

Also, it is "while giants in the sky" If you listen, after that it says "preparing to unleash" It's not the best grammar in the world, but, you know, it's a song.
