  • Pleurotus will grow on ANYTHING cellulose

  • looks like you used a plastic jug,can you cut slits in the sides of it for fruiting instead of just letting it fruit from the top?

  • @tappakeggaday1

You can, just not too many or too many mushrooms will try to form and they will all abort.

Just cut a few slits here and there evenly apart. NO PROBLEM!

  • @sporeprints all I have ever had were the button mushrooms out of the grocery store. When I have seen videos of Morels, oyster and other kinds of mushrooms I really wanted to try them and also another question if i may?I have a strainer basket for my coffee so could i just dump in the grounds and layer the spawn that way? i dont use the filters. And I would really like to get a bag of this spawn if it will work like that

  • realy?? interesting iv never herd of using coffee grounds to sustain a mushroom culture what nutrient does the fungal recieve from the coffee grounds?

  • I have some golden oyster spawn. Will this grow on coffee grounds?

  • they will grow on coffee but very anemically. You might get a mushroom or two, but that's about it.

  • Will Grey Dove or Italian Oyster spawn work on coffee grounds or paper / cardboard products?

  • Is this pleurotus ostreatus strains you are talking about? I am not familiar with the names you provided. thanks

  • The grain spawn that I have is:

    Pleurotus cornucopiae - Golden Oyster

    Pleurotus pulmonarius - Italian Oyster

Pleurotus Ostreatus - Grey Dove Oyster

I guess the common names are different depending on who supplies the spawn? I got all of these in a toilet paper mushroom kit, but I'd rather not waste toilet paper, if I can use waste paper, cardboard, or coffee grounds. BTW, thanks for posting all of your videos. They're very fascinating. You should have a PBS or HGTV show about mushrooms!

  • yeah names vary from region to region. I (Olga) sometimes make up my own mushroom names, if it helps me remember them better in the wild. For ostreatus and pulmonarius you can do coffee grounds or paper/cardboard waste, even old clothes as we have done before. cornucopiae will grow very anemically on coffee grounds, so i suggest paper waste instead. good luck, let us know how it turns out. :)

  • Will the oysters then taste like coffee??? I love oyster mushrooms but hate coffee.

  • They will not taste like coffee. :)

  • you can buy prespawned mycelium?

  • Contaminations?

  • There can be contaminations yes, like the green mold, that is the most common one, but the chances are slim, since you have pretty much killed everything in the coffee grinds with heat. :)

  • @sporeprints : and if u collect the coffee grinds from coffee shops, they'll be cold and some of them dry, right? i had some previous experiments and some of them got contams. will it be necessary to pasteurize? tks

  • you can pasteurize if you want. there will be less contamination then.
