By the way, normal fuel flow was 70 to 90 GALLONS per hour!!!! Which is why they only had 1 hour to 1hour 20 minute sorties!!
Just for the record, I have the V6 powered MK 26B Spitfire and have about 60 hours flying in it now. VERY cool machine and a LOT of FUN! My planned cruise is 170 kts at 36 litres per hour. NOW do you understand why not 100% and running a V12? Just as much fun and attracts just as much attention. ALL is good in the Spitfire future world. Nearly 100 kits made already....
Vne for this machine is still 194 kts due to UK CAA certification. I believe the airframe has been tested to 230 kts and will NOT be going any faster. I have just gone through the MK IX Spitfire Pilot Operating handbook and these machines flew at 155 kts going from point A to point B. If they had a heavy load and used the rear fuel tank they could fly at 200 MPH without much range sacfrifice! The speeds you read about for these machines were battle fighting speeds NOT cruise.
The Aussie Spitfire Company don't make a 100% kit, the largest they go is 90% running a V8... they don't put a V12 in any of their planes due to weight and making them too difficult to fly....
what kind of V8 is that ? I'm thinking of using Alluminium Allow Buick / Rover 4.6 V8 for a Spitfire or Mosquito project ?
PS:Spitfire Aircraft Company based in Aussie use an Alison V12 which is 1200hp compared to MK3 Spitfire of 1400 hp, the kit which is 100% scale is made of wood in a similar process to de havilland mosquito is also 2000lbs (1 ton) lighter, according to them performance is better than MKIX considering the lighter weight
Excellent - I look forward to when you define the speeds - I saw on the website that fast cruise is listed at 240kts, above the V6's speeds - I suspect Vne will be higher than the v6. Maybe 300kts is around the corner? Your kits continue to impress. I'm especially excited with the option for controls in the rear cockpit - one of the main reasons I haven't considered this before.
You probably have to have deep pockets to have one. Must be nice.
