@colinkadink You're rught this piece has similarities to "Jaws", but actually I think J.W. got the Jaws theme from another Russian composer, Stravinsky. It might have been borrowed from "The Rites of Spring" or the Firebird Suite, can't recall which one.
@NanKingRaddish ...It was mirroring the Soviet party line at the time. In reality, Russia was heavily Eastern Orthodox christian at the time the movie takes place. The Germans were Catholic. I`m sure the Russian army prayed before they went into battle. If you look closely, you can see some of the Eastern style crosses on the churches at Pskov. This aside, it still is an excellent film and it can-and should be enjoyed for what it is.Eisenstein was only following Stalin`s orders at the time.
You know, the battle scenes were actually very well done considering this was made in 1938. Hell, the battle scenes in this movie are even better than half the stuff Hollywood can come up with today, not least of all the opening battle in Gladiator, and similar things.
@5h2oso4 Well it is propaganda, everything was back then was. But it is a beautiful movie. I was watching Eisenstein's Ivan the Terrible last night, and the movie really hammered the message of russian power and unity. But it doesn't take away from what a innovative film maker this guy was. I mean it was the Soviet Union in the 1930's, the guy didn't have much artistic license. I see your point though as well.
this film is the biggest piece of shit ever filmed. it is pure fantasy and soviet propaganda at its normal. the actual number of perished knights was in reality around 20! they did not fight on the lake but on the shore and few plebs ventured about 50m onto the ice making it crack. there were no teutonic knights present but knights of "Fratres militiae Christi de Livonia" or simply Livonian order. they never wore heavy armor as it was mid 13th century. max 10-15kg of steel. pure russian bullshit
@RitchieBrinckmore propaganda? my grandmother saw germans throwing little kids up in the air and hitting them with their foot like a ball. But I am sure those weren't ordinary drafted germans, probably was some zig-freak

The great scene! Great picture! but should be watched with a new record of this awesome music, unbelievable impression! (youtube: Eisenstein & Prokoviev - A. Nevsky : Battle on the Ice)
As in, every single film historian and everyone else who understands the context it was made in? I wrote an entire research paper on film propaganda once. About 1/4 of it was just about this movie.
@RitchieBrinckmore -the opposing force is dressed like KKK -in white and crosses---also is anti Us propoganda plus anti religion - ironic since Nevsky originally fought under the banner of orthodoxy
@anamdon What is your point? That's what Teuton Order wore, white tabards with black crosses. And it's not as though religious genocide didn't play a huge part in crusades.
Okay, here's the point about this battle looming so large in Russian history. Just before this the princedoms were flat on their back to the Golden Horde. They aren't going to be able to get rid of the Mongols for centuries more. But there is a victory against invaders from the west. If it were three Germans with a letter opener the hoo-haa would be the same. Like the battle of Puebla. We celebrated it as Cinco de Mayo forgetting the French cam back to conquer 3/4 of Mexico.
@Pseudologic -yes i certainly agree with you my friend-but i was talking about this movie's connection to anti-religious propoganda as well as anti- nazi propoganda-remember that this movie was released in 1938--this was my point -it sure is a great movie but my point is not vs what u suggested to me earlier- thanks-
As usual with Russian and Slavic historians the battle of Ice has been rather glorified, it was in reality a skirmish in which the Teutonic Order were out numbered. There were very few causlties in the battle which fuher points to it not being a major event. Doesn't take anything away from the film though.
the battle was huge for that time. some germans only tried to subdue some russian lands, nothing special for your little understanding of history. little worms like you understand little of the history.
No I do understand history and this battle was not huge, all you have to do is read the supposed losses to realize that, and some slavic historians claim there were no Russian losses lmao. It's a propaganda victory. I see you're American and I know a lot of you guys over there are a bit slow so just read John I. L. Fennell's book then maybe you would know a bit more.
It's not a conspiracy just common sense. As I said read that book and the truth will be revealed to you. I don't blame you guys for believeing the Slavic historians, but generally they are not the greatest sources of information.
I don't read bullshit. And about historians you're right. I'm sure Teutons would record their miserable defeat in all it's glory. They didn't have a direct interest to downplay it in anyway. Then again, I'm sure you consider the bible an excellent source of historical information.
John I. L. Fennell sounds like a Teutonic name lmao, I suppose you favour the some of the Russian sources that claim there were no ussian losses. You realise when the battle of the ice was revised don't you?
I never claimed there were no Russian losses, only that Teutons tried to take over parts of Russia and failed. Fennell references his study to German historians at the time, and Germans couldn't just say "Slavs totally annihilated us and we ran away losing large parts of our forces" so they said "We sent a very minor force and inflicted heavy casualties on slavs before returning to deal with other problems"
@loufalce Watch the scene in 'Gods and Generals' where the Confederate army under Stonewall Jackson is attacking the US Eleventh Corps at the battle of Chancellorsville - It was modeled after this music.
@AndreyFlexoBudkov ....It shows. The resemblance is remarkable. These two films have music that can stand alone.IMHO "Nevski" and "Conan" are two of the best scores ever created for a film. They add yet another dimention to the overall experiece.

oh yes it is. something of a lost classic, sinceEisenstein's other films are more noteworthy. the criterion DVD had great insight into the film, especially the connection between the Prokeviev score and the imagery, something Eisenstein borrowed from Walt Disney of all people! There was a re-recorded version that came out in 1992 or93 that mixed the new score with the movie. sadly, this has not been released...yet
They really nailed the Teutonic Orders look in this movie. They look holy and yet, terrifying. I'm impressed with the directors sense of what the Novogordians saw the Teutonc Order as.
I'm glad somebody else had noticed how prophetic the scene with a child turned out to be.
Curiously enough another russian director Tarkovsky had made a movie called "Stalker" where an accident on reactor #4 is mentioned and a "no humans allowed zone is created". Movie was made 7 years before Chernobyl accident...

@seehofer20 This was not a propaganda against Germans, there was no reason to have propaganda against Germans for Russians before 1941.
