Sony left a hole in the PSP hardware and since the VITA can play PSP games via Emulation, they can use that to boot up Homebrew on the PSP side. What we don't know is if the PSP hardware hole will take us to the Vita hardware :)

Next step: emulate a DS. Which is technically possible, since the Vita's screen can contain a DS's (pixel-wise at least), a touchscreen is available, and there should be enough processing power if properly optimized. Let the reverse engineering begin.

The PSP (doesn't matter if your on CFW or OFW) can play modded games that run on any PSP. It tricks the PSP into thinking its an official downloaded game. You can do this for apps, games, and homebrew. The PSV uses the same tech for the PSP so any PSP homebrew or game using this type of hack will work on the PSV. Hacking the PSV has not happened yet.
