Thank you. Nobody these days seems to recognize that Jews have historically constituted their own ethnic group - I suppose what makes it confusing is the relatively recent phenomenon of people converting to Judaism who don't come from that lineage.

there's nothing new about it, people have been mixing and converting forever, what changes is how differences are perceived: what constitutes a marker changes over time and space, that's why identity group imaginary may seem neat and linear through so many changes over history. But the hard fact of mixing remains a constant from a historical perspective.

Of course there was mixing in 2000 years, but most Jews claim relation to the Jews of at least the 2nd Temple period, from Spain to Germany to Ethiopia to Iran. All those groups are diverse, but they were always minorities in their own places. Jewish tradition never encouraged marrying outside the tribe. Genetics will answer the question one day. Not like it matters.
