I like to think I am an ok looking guy, but he looks like I would have wanted to grow up to look and had the voice (speaking and singing) I would have loved to have had.
I'm a cancer survivor and former professional singer. (One had nothing to do with the other:).) But I can only imagine Bastianini's emotional and physical ordeals as a world-class baritone with an extraordinary voice AND laryngeal malignancy. He sounds a little rough and short of breath here, but still damn good. God bless Bastianini, and may he rest in peace:) --
Heard recently that chronic inflammation can certainly open the door to cancer..not at all to say he had flawed technique, even though its was necessarily aggressive given his rep, It takes its toll at the end of the night.. I just read his wiki entry..very well written..but..

What they mean there is the way your voice is after a big night on the drink. repeated minor inflammation after a big sing is not the same thing.
@raphaelhudson I'm sorry, its been a while since I heard that on the radio..and the cancer specialist on the panel was talking about any kind of chronic inflammation, not remotely concerning Ettore Bastianini's cause of death.Maybe I was not clear there. So, yes, pure speculation on my part. but..Singing an opera.."costs"..call it inflammation or dont..and recovery periods are scheduled in..Singing 4 and 5 a week, and such..and singing his repertoire in large rooms..one just has to wonder?

That simply made me cry. I love the baritono version ot Core n'grato but, most of all, I love Ettore Bastianini. I believe he's among the best things ever happened to our cruel and nasty world.
I love his voice, the sensuality in it. I love the fact he plays with it, I love the emotion and, at the same time, the complete lack of drama.
Incredible Bastianini - as usual. You know what? I really, really adore him. Certainly, the best post-WWII baritone (much as I like Taddei, Panerai, Gobbi).
I couldn't believe this recording was made in 65' during the period of his radiation treatment for his throat cancer.
His gifted voice was still there.
As for comparison to Hvorostovsky, they have totally different kind of voice, no point to compare. Hvorostovsky is a big Bastianini fan just like the rest of us.

En algo estas en lo cierto, no hay punto de comparación entre Carlos Álvarez y Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Álvarez es un gran barítono verdiano al igual que Piero Capuccilli (entre otros,) pero se encuentra muy lejos de ser el mejor del mundo como Hvorostovsky, eso cualquier realmente conocedor del canto lo sabe. Además creo que eres tú quien debería ir más seguido a "Mix Up" o a cualquier lugar que te pueda informar lo equivocado que estas.

Sí pero admitamos que el timbre de Bastianini era muy especial. Por eso afirmo (con toda convicción) que es el mejor barítono de todos los mejores.

Claro el timbre es de un autentico baritono verdiano y el mas hermoso
pero lo que digo es que Hvorostovsky esta muy muy lejos de esos monstruos del canto de los grandes baritonos y las grandes figuras.
