In the manga, Mako actually not only appeared more often, but she appeared much earlier on. The chapter that this episode is based on came way, way, waaay early on. In fact, the chapter where Ten and Kintaro go visit a kintergarten, while being just some random classroom in the anime, was actually Mako's classroom in the manga.
