  • I've already got tears in my eyes

  • Wow..

  • Cultural Educator, Annawon Weeden (Metacom), named after the last Wampanoag war chief to surrender during King Philip’s War holds ancestry from the Narragansett, Pequot & other eastern woodland nations & is an enrolled member of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe on Cape Cod, MASS. The youngest son of Patricia Weeden & Tall Oak, he’s a proud father.

  • thank you pbs we nit stuff like this to help us recover some of the lost history that we dont get in our history books in scholl .

  • AWESOME

  • This is a really good documentary. Just watched 'em all on Netflix.

I think people need to move away from the Race aspect of what was happening. The majority white Europeans did not come here with the intention of murdering every nonwhite on the continent. The American peoples didn't grow there, festering a hate for the American Natives for being a different color. This fiery conflict is that of Business. The Europeans took advantage of someone that they perceived as disadvantaged. Not more.

  • What is it?

  • it's time we need to reuintte

  • I see Youtube has become the ~honored site of the 2009 Oppression Olympics. (Um, that's in reference to the comments here, not the video.)

    Anyway, this series is awesome.

  • I do not know much about the Indians, but I am learning. I enjoyed the first episode and hope to watch the other episodes also.

  • watch 500 Nations, hosted by Kevin Kosner, great film

  • stop blaming me for I was not there

  • life sucks man then u die

  • Imagine Aliens arriving, their civilization is thousands of years advanced than yours. They kill 10 million of your people. the remainder is forced into a desolate area and the Aliens alter ALL your values and beliefs. Change to their way or DIE! You must learn their language or be punished. You must believe as they do or you are less than human. They kill your family and indoctrinate your children and grandchildren and disgrace your way of life. Congratulations you're an American Indian!

  • I agree except for the aliens being more advanced. The aliens just got interstellar travel before you did. Sure they had laser guns but you were still able to beat them with your weapons with enough troops. What really gave them the upper hand was their poisonous gas from their planet that couldn't hurt them but killed your people in the thousands which allowed them to take all of your land.

  • @vetsurvivor Very true. But a lot of our civilizations certainly were not a "thousand years behind". They had things we didn't, and vice versa. They simply had weapons that were far more advanced, and diseases, and far more experience in killing and violence, lol. Our world was so isolated; if only we had trade to Asia and Europe, we could've all been speaking Nahuatl instead of English right now.

  • It amazes me how the injustice of what was done to our people is becoming well known thanks to such programs and still nothing has been done to remedy the situation. How long will the government sweep us under the rug? Only until all of America stands up for what is right.

  • omfg black ppl listin 2 me u are not the only ppl who where slaves so get off ur sope box and get a job!...im native american and im proud of it!!!!!!

  • I am native american and proud to know that at least our culture still takes pride in honesty more than fucking white money grubbing. Having a job without helping your community is still slavery to me. Helping fat people get fatter and alcohol to the people is a crime in itself to the community and you are helping white people kill.

I gave up on the culture I was told to live by whitey. I was lied to in school that the buffalo died of a "heat wave" White people disgust me in the way they teach

  • I descend from the Indians of the East coast and have studied their histories for 50 years. This is extremely well-researched and presented. I congratulate PBS for this presentation. For many years I lived among the Apache, Navajo and plains tribes. There is still discrimination. The wars of the past seem to be in the courts today and the American Indians continually have to fight for the right to be who they were born to be; Americans of Indian descent. I'm proud of my heritage!

  • when aboriginals in north America win a court battle for land rights the aboriginals in Australia use the same documents for there land claims and vice versa so we,re helping each other and most people don,t know that they are fighting some of the same court battles we are.

  • that happened with my nation too

  • I'm Russian but I think the Native Americans were and still are the greatest people to walk the planet

  • I wish there were still Native Americans today that weren't Americanized.

  • This looks like a good documentary. I'm going to purchase it on iTunes.

  • Not discriminated against? Been to Pine Ridge lately? Browning? Lame Deer? Fort Apache? Wake up.

  • I'm just curious cause I really don't know, I have Native blood but I'm mixed. How bad is it? I want to know these things so I don't have the shame of being ignorant of my ancestors past.

  • how bad is what living on the rez or is it another thing u want to know about be more specific it might depend on what tribe your native blood comes from i'm cree

  • PBS remakes "Dances With Wolves." Pretty to view but history with an agenda is not history.

  • I'm just curious, since i haven't seen it yet: what do you think the agenda is? I saw a little preview and am fascinated. Can't wait to see the whole thing.

  • Musliims? I don't think so. They were practicing The Orishas of which Voodoo, Santeria and Paolo, and others stem from. Origins are Yoruba!

  • am part of the "neutral nation" in new york

  • Why is Tashunkawitko and Victorio out of it?

  • Why is Tashunkawitko and Victorio out of it?

Nothing about cheyennes and Roman Nose either.

The 1 episode wasn't too good, but the 2nd and 3 episodes were very good.

Cochise and Victorio should be part of Geronimo story.

  • I HAVE to see this. Is it possible to watch this online or on youtube somewhere?

  • You can see it on the PBS Web site -- click on the first address in the video description.

  • Quit being a cheap ass an buy it.

  • Free Leonard Peltier.....a native american political prisoner for more than 3 decades

  • Thanks PBS - this series is extremely well done. All Americans should see this and be aware of what took place back then and is taking place to this day with regard to the First Americans.

  • " most of the black slaves..where muslim "

What is your source for that? I doubt that the majority of African slaves during the slave trading era were Muslim. I don't think Islam was that wide spread in West & central Africa where the slaves came from. The majority seemed to practice traditional beliefs.

  • A lot of them actually were by then Arabs had already been down there and spread Islam into west and even South Africa

  • cool thnx I'm looking forward to seeing as much of this as I can

  • Probably one of the best documentary films I have ever seen.

  • it isn't only about Europe and their culture( people don't need to be force feed that ), theres a whole world out there and many are really missing out. we should learn from one other, and stop trying to dominate... it's about sharing and mutual respect.

  • you think the genocid of Cal. was bad check out Kevin Annetts fight for the bones of the american indian children in Canada to be returned to there families. That is an ongoing fight NOW. Help him.

  • Yes, we must speak out. People don't want to think such things could happen but they did! There's many things listed on youtube also look up republicoflakotah or Russell Means

  • People think African Americans got it so bad yet the American Indian who where here FIRST are still being discriminated agains to this day. I only hope that one day we can have an American Indian president!!!!!!!!

  • That is not true American natives are not discriminated against these days hell everyone wants to claim native blood these days Black people period are still the most discriminated people on the planet

  • Dude My people (I'm a born native) where the first to be tested on...my ancestors where forced out of there reservation...my great great grandfather was forced into an Indian Boarding School for immediate assimalation becuase his way of life was considered "savaged" and "uncivilized" the boarding schools where a living hell and the teachers of these schools brainwashed and tortured if they sang any native songs, spoke native american, and practice any native american rituals and religions

  • This culture has systematically destroyed every culture it has encountered. This culture does not allow for diversity and in this way it has one major weakness.

I have great sorrow in my heart from the native and the black peoples. I also have great sorrow for hundreds of other cultures that we have destroyed.

It has been a terrible loss and we suffer greatly for it in this moment of corruption and greed.

We are brothers, and will proceed to the next stage together.

  • I am Native Black and white, Black and Native have suffered but Blacks at least somewhat have been able to rise from what we were. Perfectionless is right. Natives do have it worse. Even worse, for Natives its thrown in their face with the government everyday, like the Black Hills which are sacred Native lands, what did the government do? They carved Mount Rushmore to spite Crazy Horse who was brave enough to fight for his lands. Trail of tears was attrocious. Natives went from mils to thousands

  • Actually, American born whites are the most discriminated people on the planet, everybody blames us for everything.....never forget that whites have fought many causes that were not their own....what many confuse as a race war...is actually a war of big buisness against people.....

  • Why not? if Obama can be President why not native americans?

  • Winnona Laduke ran for vice President in 2000

  • if you get last nights epispode let me know I got suck working.

  • These episodes are available for viewing online. Go the Web site address at the beginning of the description, next to the video.

  • It's great that this is so accessible. The more people that see it, the better.

  • going to record the series....can't wait!

  • About Time....innit? All thiz talk of genoc-

ide o'er the big waters when genocide

    happened here.

  • Wado U ne tu na hey for the story that continues......

  • yes. wado

i am very excited about the show

  • If it's anything i apologise for what my spanish ancestors have done. i met a native man when i was a child and just came from colombia. i barely understood the english language and so i understaood less when he said my fathers hurt yours. i didn't even know that the USA was a different country but now i know the difference and i apologise.

  • Rosetta Stone ... 1930!!

Not exactly ... not even close !!

The Rosetta Stone was discovered by one Napoleon Bonarte's infantry man during the French "Grande Armee" invasion of Egypt in 1799 and later translated by young French genuis: Jean-Francois Champollion in 1822.

  • NON-FICTION HISTORY:

May I recomment to you 2 serious, excellent, well researched & documented ... "5 STARS" ... history books" that you might not have read or be made aware of.

Tithe: AMERICAN HOLOCAUST by historian/author: DAVID STANNARD ... published by the Oxford University.

Tithe: DOGS OF THE CONQUEST by historian/author: JOHN GRIER ... published by the University of Oklahoma.

If you cannot find them at the bookstores, try the internet or your local municipal library.

  • i sahll research it and yes there was a holocaust here. WHat do you think of this pbs documentary?

  • about time !!!!......tracy lane=brave warrior

  • Aw, I'm so excited, I've been waiting for months! I just finished writing a paper on the Wounded Knee Massacre..gotta say, I've never written a paper before that I am emotionally attached to! At times it was painful to write, but necessary! Everybody else in class wrote about Nazi Germany or Communist Russia, I felt compelled to write about something that schools often overlook.

  • I'm very excited to watch this series. Finally something interesting on t.v. I've been fascinated by native culture since I was a very little girl. I used to think when I grew up I could be Native American, I have no idea where I got that idea from. For someone reason the culture has always strongly resonated with me. It doesn't hurt that Native men (and women) are beautiful.

  • Good for You!!

  • Migwitch

  • I cannot wait for this. It is about time we see a mini series through a Native American point of view.

    Native Pride :)

  • Thank-you I hope you put more Native American Films out for all to see.

  • I Hope there are more things like this aired . It is important that everyone has thier voice. Even ours as Native Americans.

  • Looks great!

I hope someday we will realize such a project in southamerica too!

    much respect!

  • "I guess there are many versions of history yet to be told"

yes versions of history, most only get taught PART of one version. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee should be mandatory reading here on this continent

my god, it looks like there are a few good ppl left in this world, a few who use their brains and hearts together. be seein ya around

  • russell means!! man i wanna see this

  • when does this come out on tv???

  • PBS airdates: Monday, April 13 May 11,2009 (check local listings)

  • Looks awesome.....Hope it comes to UK...!

  • Can U imagine what this story would have been like if the voyages of China's Zheng He of 600 years ago had been followed up with trade and migration? There would have been no white mans' America, no rednecks, no black slaves. Native Americans would have thrived with the Chinese instead of being virtually obliterated by arrogant, conceited and rapacious white European settler society.

  • The Chinese thought of themselves as superior to other peoples whom they considered "barbaric" which is not unlike the view held by the ancient Greeks in relation to their non-Hellenic neighbors. With that in mind, what makes you think the Chinese wouldn't exploit the Native peoples of the Americas? I don't believe in the 1421 voyages at all but if that were the case, I read that they were seeking tribute from foreign lands. To exact tribute would require subjugation therefore the Chinese...

  • ... would have overrun the Americas to do that.

  • I'm opache and i wanna know why you feel that way. pleas email me.

  • Me too

  • YOU are ignorant, Chalmers. Study Chinese history and see how the Chinese have treated some of their neighbors. Hell, look at what the Chinese are doing in Tibet TODAY. Only a fool believes that Native Americans would've lived in peace and harmony had the settlers been Asian instead of European. Tribal warfare and one group trying to conquer another has gone on since the dawn of time. And it may never completely stop.

  • the native people are better as any kind human ever I meet, I am Iranian journalist .artist, so sorry white man can be so selfish to do,,,stay strong, fight back , education and education is key

  • 1:18 i know that guy man that was russ means aha ive met him at the sundance in south dakota at the rose bud sundance thatnk you for bringing this video aho thank you my love for the people my people

  • all native americans look cute im black but i dnt mind findin me one cuz they look mad fresh

  • So it will be. What has happened in the past must never happen again! You can be proud and you are a beautiful people. If you can´t be proud of your ancestors, of your culture whoever else has the right to be proud.

  • You are right,my dear friend Nikkafan..I told you you should join all together to be listened; and let me tell you once more you still are very Proud and beautiful!!

No, the past won't happen again because you are the Future...

Hope this time we will understand..

  • One can not say this series will be "truth". For this series is only the opinions of producers and writers. Truth remains for those whose eyes remain unclouded by longing. Truth is not found in what someone says the past is.

    FORGIVENESS...

The stupid neither forgive or forget.

    The naive forgive and forget.

The Wise forgive, but do not forget.

Do not beat the dead horse of yesterday, it will not get up. It is time to get on a live horse and continue the journey. hecitu...

  • Hopefully, this will detail some of the genocide committed in California.Look it up,The California tribes were all almost annihilated, worse than any other part of the country!

  • UNITE!!!!!

  • I'm so anxious to see this series. It's going to be so good. Finally the "Truth Can Be Told"...well, some of the truth anyway...hopefully many many more parts to this series will be added. Kudos PBS!

  • I'm so excited and anxious to see this series! The previews show some reall good acting and realistic scenes...so happy that "The Truth can now be told". Hopefully there will be many more parts after this and more and more truths..

  • Looking forward to watching the series!

  • I'm really interested in this series! Finally, tell it how it really was...

  • Looking forward to this story that's been

    half told!

"The greatest thing a person can have is the power."

    Geronimo said:

"The power speaks to any with the ears to listen."

  • This is supposed to be on our local station at 8 pm on Monday nights;I hope my mom will let me stay up! Thank You PBS for another great documentary!

  • out standing must see.

  • Can't judge from the trailer; however, think it'll be worthwhile if it avoids 1. "noble savage" rhetoric, 2. white (European/American) guilt, and 3. current political parallels. That in itself would be an epic achievement. Will certainly be watching.

  • looking forward to this

  • I'm very aware that this particular historical issue can be unpleasant for many WASP's but the fact of the matter is that those "good Christians" committed a genocide against the magnificent native American culture (Sioux, Apaches, Comanches, Black Hawks, etc).

The Wounded Knee massacre is the most clear example... How sad and ironic.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH have been waiting for a truer history of the Native Americans, but all we kept hearing was about the Holocaust.

  • Boy, I'm going to have to watch this. I've seen history shows where Native Americans were mentioned, but the see a mini-series of their whole perspective on America...I'm sure this will be both informative and powerful.
