thankyou, for posting this video, when i get asked what faith or religion are you? when i say that i am eastern orthodox, they seem to be baffled about this. & they seem to know all the faiths after 1054, (the great schism) or after the reformation.at that's it.
@TheHesychasm That's strange. Most of the Protestants I have talked to (on forums) think that Orthodoxy is just Roman Catholicism but without The Pope. They think that we worship Mary and the Icons. They think we worship the Saints. They believe in Faith only without Works while the EO believes that works (7 Sacraments and the Christian Virtues) are very necessary for Salvation.
Eastern Orthodoxy is similar to Roman Catholicism and this is what keeps most Protestants from coming to it.
@Globox822 Matter of fact, an Anglican priest in Scotland invented it in 1840. From then on both the Roman Catholic and then Orthodox clergy started to adopt it for some reason... From what i've heard, they don't have neck collars or pews in the Russian and European Orthodox countries, is this correct? It is more so an America invention and trendt hen. This is not a very big surprise since the Protestants have long since taken over American Christianity *sigh*
@mishakol129 Like I said. I have never seen someone in Europe, being Orthodox priest and having white collar, ever. I come from Serbia, and have been around former Yugoslavia. Have not been in Russia, but have watched videos, and what not. I have never seen it. btw Check out "Ostrov" Russian Orthodox movie, it's incredible.
That is why I got irritated when I saw it on some of these priests. It is important to keep Orthodoxy "pure" of influence from Protestantism, Catholicism, etc
@Globox822 Actually, the practice of Orthodox priests in North American wearing the Roman-style clerical collars goes back to Patriarch St. Tikhon, who thought it would be a small way for Orthodox clergy to more easily blend in with American culture. I don't think it represents any kind of theological or liturgical influence from Protestantism or Catholicism--its just something that began as a way for Orthodox priests not to stand out and to be recognized as clergy.
@XDragasesX Thank you. I had downloaded this and other videos off of OrthodoxTV . com. Its kind of a dead media site for Orthodoxy but there are still good things on there like the Lives of certain Saints and lecures and stuff. When I said it was "kind of dead" I meant that it has not been updated in a long time because the newest video on there seems to be from 2007, but the ministry was started in 2001 after 9/11. It was kind of disappointing in that regard.
I liked this video a lot and the answers they gave, all except what one of the priest spoke at 19:30 "Do Orthodox belief that they are saved by acts?". He spoke about fasting and that its faith which saves us, but he did not talk about the Sacraments as being what saves us...He did not give a very good rebuttal for the Orthodox understanding of salvation as opposed to the Protestants doctrine of salvation, in fact he spoke in favor of the Protestants doctrine of salvation.
