Then few other events lead to Musharaf taking over Government. I think he would have left sooner then he did, but then 911 happened. And that time Pakistan could not afford a leadership vaccum. In later years of his rule, he got power hungary I guess. And civilian government is again disapointing public of Pakistan to high levels.

Musharaf handled this hostile audiance very well. And I wish we have a civilian rule but a leader of such stance. He always outshined India.

While I had some disputes with Mr. Musharaf's policies. I see few reasons as to why he came in power? Army was the only established organisation in Pakistan at the time it came into being. Thus this is the most mature and sound organisations in this whole region. And thus it had more experience of management then a civilian government ever had. Thus the civilian governments in 1990s, because of the lack of experience were not doing good. And unfortunately that lead to severe economic fall out.

One of the best leaders Pakistan has ever had.

If there was just one reason why we Pakistanis should have kept him in office, it was that he could have solved the Kashmir Issue. Thats truly one issue issue that can bring about a sea change in the economic, social and political dynamics of the sub-continent.

God help us. That being said, if Musharraf can take us so close to a Kashmir solution - why can't the current lot take the Kashmir to its logical conclusion of peaceful resolution.

That is true he had really strong points that could help Pakistan. With his presence the Kashmir issue, for the first time, had a hope of being resolved. Unfortunately for him he made some unexplained and controversial decisions like removing the judiciary. I do not know if his stance on 'War on Terror' was right, and what the implications of refusing to help USA would have been, but overall his contribution to global image of Pakistan was positive. Zardari is a criminal and should be jailed!!!

Great man, and even though I raised my voice against him, I miss him. It was the bloody USA that got him down. He couldn't deal with america, they threatened him, and he tried to save his nation as well as appease them, and they were still unhappy.
